i mean, it could be powerful if current skinheads (i read about some in greenpoint) were to hear about how shit they are from a former one. he could do a speaking tour, "racists against racism" or something idk
― Treeship, Monday, 16 May 2016 19:59 (ten years ago)
I think he's kind of out of the music and skinhead game, and that was already a thing years ago, and tbh the anti-racist skinheads would probably beat him up for horning in on their shtick
last I checked the anti-racist skinheads had the number one hobby of beating up racist skinheads but I am sure some wouldn't mind making an exception

feel like maybe there's a middle ground between 'believed heinous things in the past + fully repudiates it now' and 'believes heinous things + promotes it now'
― Mordy, Monday, 16 May 2016 20:14 (ten years ago)
definitely two different points here. if you did vile stuff in the past but are reasonable (or as reasonable as any writer for eater.com is) now, then who cares
if you're a dickhead outside of work and it reflects on your work or employer, it's a different thing
thankful my past is mostly socially semi-acceptable bad acts tbh

i believe in forgiveness but i also don't know that vox has to stand by this guy. they can speak more to his character today than i can, of course.

i don't know what you guys are arguing about. im a jew kid that grew up punk and got fucked with by skins plenty. if i was running something and found out my #2 was a prominent skinhead in that scene AND is now an adult and still rocking a skin cut and fred perrys like this guy is (not exactly distancing yrself imo) then i'd be like peace out mfer.

tbh there are non-racists I see around who have been rocking this look for twenty or thirty years and I still shake my head in disbelief
the pictures of those dudes w/that look and dad jeans with the shirt tucked in made me sigh
― μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 16 May 2016 21:49 (ten years ago)
A couple of high school acquaintances/"friends" moved to NY together and have tried to continue on the Fred Perry and close cropped look while being anti-racist (without going full-on SHARP) for almost fifteen years now. I get it, blah blah ska and rocksteady blah blah - are you really trying to 'take back' the look of a 45 year old subculture that was perverted 35 years ago? Maybe time to give it up.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 16 May 2016 22:26 (ten years ago)
I occasionally veer into that sort of style - i.e. ive owned a Harrington jacket and fred perry polo shirts - but i def wouldn't feel comfortable doing so with a shorn head.

Based on my particular sample of anti-racist skins, their number one hobby is turning into racist skins, followed by beating up other anti-racist skins, THEN comes beating up racist skins.

Had no idea fred perry shirts were associated with skinheads. I used to wear a fred perry track jacket in high school but back then i had a mop of long hair
― Treeship, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:56 (ten years ago)
Anyway, idg the idea of anti-racist skinheads. aren't they bothered by the fact that everyone thinks they're racists?
― Treeship, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 02:00 (ten years ago)
suppose it sorta started as a "reclaim the name" thing once skinhead culture got divorced from "working class british punks who listen to ska and other music of non-white origin" and became "shorthand for white power assholes around the world." the specifically non-racist skin thing probably took off in the us even moreso after the rise of nyhc and a whole raft of bands that veered rightward politically without explicitly tipping into white power bullshit. i assume today's non-racist skins kinda operate from the same position,, though yeah they're probably better off growing out their hair and volunteering for an anti-racist organization than hanging tough at the vfw hall, since at this point they're hitting "civil war renactors" levels of marginal subcultures. (though i get the feeling in certain swathes of europe the racist skin thing is still pretty prevalent at shows so maybe having a contingent of well-meaning knuckleheads on-hand helps to deter bullshit. or more likely just leads to more violence.)

one of my neighborhood bars, and some friends-of-friends around town are definitely still in the shaved head and suspenders mode
and no, I don't think anyone assumes they're racist, but it's one of those style choices that definitely feels like a personality choice made static
reasonable overlap in that group with people who work non-blue collar jobs but are into rebuilding old pickup trucks, or start their own motorcycle group of friends who are into old cafe racer bikes
oddly specific, but I can think of a dozen or people I run into who live it
― μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 04:04 (ten years ago)
I was about to start posting cool photos one of these dudes I actually do know has on fb but I just found out he is really into reposting funny memes I have never seen before
see you in three days after I get to the bottom of this meme pile
― μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 04:14 (ten years ago)
maybe my town is weird (or i hang out with the "right" people) but i have definitely met far more anti-racist skinheads than racist skinheads.
― yellow despackling power (Will M.), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 14:54 (ten years ago)
yeah idk if racist skinheads are even really a thing anymore outside of specialized racist enclaves
― μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:07 (ten years ago)
are all of these ppl who self-identify as "skinheads" or just dudes with shaved heads
― Treeship, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:08 (ten years ago)
like, do they do the doc martens, the rolled jeans, the suspenders?
I knew a few former SHARPs (Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice) when I was enlisted. I don't think that's a thing anymore either
― El Tomboto, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:10 (ten years ago)
xp yes, fred perrys and shaved heads and suspenders and oi and a frothing hatred for racist and sexist punks. not just hairless egalitarians.
― yellow despackling power (Will M.), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:11 (ten years ago)
Eh ime it's more like "still being friends with that guy who collects WP bands" fence-sitting kind of bullshit, and its opposite number isn't "meet at the Staten Island Ferry with baseball bats at midnight" anymore, it's more like just not being friends with them in your/our old age when you cross paths at music events.

idk if they're rolling jeans, but yeah, I see dudes with shaved heads and suspenders, sometimes w/the fred perry shirt instead
― μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:12 (ten years ago)
interesting. i will be on the lookout for these people. i don't think i see them in brooklyn.
― Treeship, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:13 (ten years ago)
^^ and scooterists
xp If you don't see them in Brooklyn you definitely aren't going to the right shows.
― If authoritarianism is Romania's ironing board, then (in orbit), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:14 (ten years ago)
My experience may not be typical but the skinheads I know/knew were all SHARPs and redskins or anarchists, and are now some of the most staunchly leftist and progressive and most informed commenters on my media feeds. Esp considering that in some ways their "peers" are working class white Trump voter material and they're cutting across that bullshit.
― If authoritarianism is Romania's ironing board, then (in orbit), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:18 (ten years ago)

oh yeah def scooter ppl, I think all the local ones dispersed into the cafe racer group or scooters became too normal

I'm now at the stage in life where all the bald white dudes I know shave their heads because of male pattern baldness as opposed to racial ideology and, quite frankly, I like my life a lot more now.
― i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 16:15 (ten years ago)
one time i waiting at a train station in camden and this shaved-head dude came up to me asking for a dollar and then asked if i was "down." when i said i didn't know what he meant, he pulled his shirt down some to reveal a great big fuck-off swastika tattoo. it was the first time i realized my aging-punk dress sense and shaving my head due to male pattern baldness could be...misconstrued.

xp: I'm a bald/beard. It seems to be an increasingly popular look (another bald/beard moved in across the street from me) and wish I could do anything else. I wish I still had fucking hair for fuck's sake.
