Beauty contests (parades/pageants) are invisible and meaningless in the UK, whereas I get the impression they're still quite a thing in the USA? Rear of the Year and similar is a Brit substitute - a slightly more coy (repressed) 'excuse' to gaze at female bodies

beauty contests were a holiday camp staple, right? maybe this kind of thing appeared as they faded away. feel that its continued existence and tabloid prominence indicates something obscure yet essential about british identity

The only person I know who has won any of these beauty contest things in recent years is Danielle Lloyd, and that was only because she then started going out with Teddy Sheringham (who was judging it) amid some tabloid controversy (and then went on to even more tabloid controversy of her own). Other than that, I wouldn't have known Miss UK or whatever was even still a thing.

Lol Sheringham was such a loathsome twat

obv the Americans are way above this kind of thing apart from cheerleaders, the popularity of Benny Hill repeats and their plan to "Fantastic Voyage" style send a microscopic camera crew right up a Kardashian's arse by 2020
