I do care to a certain degree about who wins the US primaries (insofar as US politics does have an impact in the UK + worldwide), but FFS how long do they go on for? This isn't even the actual election!

emil.y, Sunday, 1 May 2016 17:02 (ten years ago)

this primary season has admittedly been the worst one i can ever remember in terms of length and substance and the overall dislikable nature of pretty much all the candidates.

nomar, Sunday, 1 May 2016 17:05 (ten years ago)

like every u.s. presidential election season in my lifetime, this is the most boringly protracted one ever.

denies the existence of dark matter (difficult listening hour), Sunday, 1 May 2016 17:09 (ten years ago)

As painful as this election cycle looks, it pales before 2000's. That one had a coda.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 1 May 2016 17:11 (ten years ago)

2000 was... such a drudge

μpright mammal (mh), Sunday, 1 May 2016 17:39 (ten years ago)

I remember how 1988 at time was deemed one of the worst ever. Then 2000 dwarfed it. Now we've got what we've got in 2016 and a split Supreme Court -- I can almost see why doing anything by popular vote inevitably leads to disaster now.

But ya know, I really have come around to making these things Things I Just Don't Care About. It's a bit forced, but it gets me out of bed in the mornings.

hah! I see very few of those on facebook, but the okc notifications where it says "such and such is checking out your profile!" turn out to be poly people way too many times lately

Other Music closing.

stuff closes.

scott seward, Monday, 9 May 2016 21:08 (ten years ago)

living in the same city as long as I have I have learned to accept the constant turnover as institutions as part of the nature of urban living. That doesn't mean I don't miss places when they go (and I could offer a fairly long list) but I mourn them and move on cuz there's always some other new thing opening.

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 May 2016 21:13 (ten years ago)

OF institutions that should say

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 May 2016 21:13 (ten years ago)

I mean, I bought a few things at OM, and I can appreciate the affection some had for the place. But I also saw insanely overpriced things there, and likely wasn't the only one who experienced (first-hand) their "What? No, you must be mistaken -- we never stocked that title" consignment shenanigans.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 9 May 2016 21:18 (ten years ago)

seems like a lot of the people who are saddest when things close have the oldest stories about being a customer. it's more like a lost youth thing. "awww, shit, haven't been there in years, but i remember fondly..."

scott seward, Monday, 9 May 2016 21:41 (ten years ago)

it's probably just like the celebrity death thing. you might not have thought about prince for a long time, but, you know, memories.

scott seward, Monday, 9 May 2016 21:42 (ten years ago)

I was in Other Music just about 2 years ago (May 2014; I remember because I was in the neighborhood for other reasons). I didn't buy anything because, as always, their jazz selection was shit.

I never really feel or understand the overdetermined "record store snob" experience but will never forget mid-90s visit to OM when I asked floor dude if they had any Robert Wyatt and something in my inflection (maybe they don't?) gave him an opening to laugh derisively to impress the girl he was talking with

OM RIP

Hadrian VIII, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 13:35 (ten years ago)

generally lousy selection but the used stuff was constantly circulating and full of great finds

Hadrian VIII, Tuesday, 10 May 2016 13:39 (ten years ago)

the genre labels were genuinely awful there

it was a fine record store but like most things in NYC i feel like they get undue attention for being in NYC

As much as I liked seeing the Spacemen 3 font on the banners, Other Music also never paid my gf for the copies of her album they sold.
