Yeah but they've established that Jon's friends will likely be ambushed and killed if they leave the room, too.

dothraki doing the spanish inquisition sketch re what's better than seeing a beautiful woman naked was kinda funny, but other than that i rly hope we don't have to listen to too much of their goofy fantasy machismo this season

it seems so late in the game to be setting up this Tyrion as emergency city manager plot. Maybe he'll do such a good job that after Dani conquers the world she decides to hand the throne him before turning into white flames and melting the north
― Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Monday, 25 April 2016 19:20 (ten years ago)
I don't really have any guesses as to where they're taking that plotline...
― Evan, Monday, 25 April 2016 19:25 (ten years ago)
i think it's just a way for tyrion to regain his power while stalling that whole storyline for another 2 years until martin publishes another book the burned ships are repaired
― Karl Malone, Monday, 25 April 2016 19:38 (ten years ago)
i mean it seems inevitable that when daenerys FINALLY goes west for the final showdown, tyrion will be at her side with a bunch of power and influence and it'll set up interesting conflicts with his family and westeros in general

That almost ecstatic expression of renewed sense of purpose and duty on Brienne of Tarth's face when Sansa formally accepted her service practically screamed that she's going to die soon.

the whole Brienne & Pod vs. a half-dozen Bolton suckers was really hard to figure out for a while until I rewound it about a dozen times and I realized the guy in charge of the dogs? That motherfucker took off the second trouble showed up. That's what they only had to murder 5 out of 6 in the party, and no dogs. Mr. Hound done R-U-N-N-O-F-T as soon as he heard steel on steel, probably before that, actually.
Watch it again. K9 handlers stay the fuck away when a hostage situation gets violent. That's SOP going way back, apparently.
― bothan zulu (El Tomboto), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 03:56 (ten years ago)
This has basically become a series of unconnected vignettes of varying quality and tone, from genuinely tense and atmospheric (Sansa and Theon) to comedy skits (Dorne and the boob snakes).
I'm vaguely optimistic they'll pull out some proper exhilarating shit as they always have in the past, but for now it's lost a good deal of weight and momentum.
― the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 07:31 (ten years ago)
both dorne and the dothraki are basically new adventures of hercules. also can't believe the extent to which they've stalled the daenerys storyline, as mentioned by others itt.
last season was p crappy and rambling too. they seem a bit afraid of actually allowing the characters to do the things they want to do. a lot of stasis. like it is almost funny that they've found a new way for daenerys to be stuck somewhere for good. no doubt in the finale when she finally escapes the dothraki, she'll break her ankle or something.

I think the house of widows thing seems interesting. She'll probably meet new recruits there.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 08:49 (ten years ago)
The house of widows is one of those things that could be great in theory but probably won't be in practice. The Dorne stuff at least got rid of a load of deadwood characters and might actually lead to a war.
If John Snow is really did then Davos is effectively our eyes and ears around the Wall now, if anything he's likely to be more prominent this year. John Snow probably isn't dead though.
I can't remember how Arya went blind but marooning her hundreds of miles away from everyone else was a terrible narrative decision.
― Matt DC, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 09:08 (ten years ago)
'You'll just have to sit here and wait' seems to be the M.O. for so many character arcs right now. WTF is going on in this show? Those white walkers had better pull their fingers out.
― TARANTINO! (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 10:50 (ten years ago)
it's one thing isolating main characters, but they give them this one basic simple goal and then have them frustrated in every attempt to achieve it, it's like they've found that having one character trying to bounce the same ball off the wall for three seasons is the easiest way to deal with so many storylines at once, cos you just see them and instantly know nothing in their plotline has changed.
they've had a whole season of dorne being annoyed, arya getting beaten up and failing tests, a few seasons of daenerys going from triumph to setback. are there no ideas in the writers room or something?
― japanese mage (LocalGarda), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 11:07 (ten years ago)
I didn't see a "next week on" but given how this show cycles character scenes I expect next week to be catching up with Littlefinger, Bran and Sam.
― Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 11:10 (ten years ago)
This has basically become a series of unconnected vignettes of varying quality and tone
in other words, a faithful interpretation of the books
― 龜, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 12:15 (ten years ago)
I liked this episode. Kind of disappointed that they killed off the one potentially interesting character in the Dorne storyline, but maybe that just means that they are going to speed through the end of that story (sand snakes arrive in king's landing, get killed by Zombie Mountain or something, the end).
― silverfish, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 14:39 (ten years ago)
The complaining about stalling is pretty funny, when in a way the show has speeded up immensely how fast it takes for characters to go somewhere. Arya spent 3 seasons (?) wandering around Westeros before she got on the ship, it took Jamie a season to get with Brienne to Kings Landing. But it only took Tyrion half a season to get to Meereen, and in this premiere Jamie goes Dorne-Kings Landing between episodes, and Daenerys gets to the dothraki camps as well. And I complained about Melisandre getting to Castle Black from Winterfell in the last thread.
So they're getting rid of the sense of scale of the place. But they're not really replacing it with any propulsion or action.
― Frederik B, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 14:53 (ten years ago)
yeah but once you discover locations you can fast travel between them
i know the state of affairs is a little dismal because i caught myself thinking "i wonder what bran is up to?"
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 14:56 (ten years ago)
It's not so much about how long it takes to get to places, but what happens on that journey and when they get there. Arya and the Hound was great. Arya having to complete endless gnomic tasks week in week out, with no clear end point or reason in mind is just boring. I'm sure something'll happen to her next week. I don't remember how she got blinded either though.
― TARANTINO! (dog latin), Tuesday, 26 April 2016 15:11 (ten years ago)
i liked the arya storyline, and the performance of her sadistic mentor, but they are dragging it out for sure.
have even wondered about rickon.

It was a magical punishment for using the face swapping to get personal revenge on the evil kingsguard guy that was visiting. And yeah I REALLY hope she isn't just going to slowly learn how to deal with being a blind face swapper in training for the course of the entire season...
