A prank caller convinced employees of a Coon Rapids Burger King to smash all of the windows of the restaurant to keep the building from exploding, Coon Rapids police say.

The incident happened Friday evening at the Burger King on the 2000 block of Northdale Boulevard.

According to police, employees received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Coon Rapids Fire Department. The caller said the restaurant was pressurized and could explode, so the employees needed to break the windows to relieve the pressure.

Longtime DFL Congresswoman Betty McCollum faces a primary contest Aug. 9 from a challenger many would consider an unlikely Democrat — former Independence Party candidate Steve Carlson, a self-described Tea Party and Donald Trump supporter who likes to express his views through rap and song.

While Carlson calls the eight-term congresswomen “seriously uninformed and incapable of real leadership,” she defends her record as a “progressive Democrat who has worked to keep Minnesota families and communities strong while standing up for equality for all Minnesotans.” She says Carlson, in contrast, is “clearly not a Democrat.”

A St. Paul resident, Carlson defeated the Independence Party’s endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate in a 2014 primary, but was disavowed by the party’s leadership. Carlson ran for Congress in the 4th Congressional District in 2010 and 2012 as an Independence Party candidate. Carlson told The Gazette he originally chose to run as an Independence Party candidate in the 4th Congressional District because no one else had filed for that party, so he could proceed directly to the general election.

Prior to challenging McCollum in the 4th Congressional District, Carlson had announced he was running an independent write-in campaign for U.S. president. He now supports Donald Trump, who Carlson believes “really is an independent candidate like Bernie Sanders, who have shaken up Washington in this campaign, for the better.”

A harsh critic of what he calls the Democratic Party’s “corrupt establishment,” Carlson wants to create change within the DFL. In a 2014 video posted to his website, he called the DFL a “real dinosaur,” and he now insists his positions are “more Democratic than the Democrats.”

“I could also run as a Republican, but I would be a change agent,” he told The Gazette.

Carlson says he supports “free higher education for everybody who can participate” and that he’s a strong proponent of human rights and racial equity.

He also supports decentralization of the federal government’s power in favor of state control, as well as traditional marriage, voter ID and Trump’s proposal of a wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

“A wall, properly conceived, can provide the kind of security and certainty for businesses to invest,” he told The Gazette. “In turn, those businesses can fund proper security and a wall.”

Carlson strongly opposes ObamaCare.
