With my electric kettle I've found the best result is just to let it hit boil and switch off, pop open the lid, and let steam come out for like 60 seconds, or alternatively just let it sit closed for like 3-4 mins. Erring on the side of not hot enough seems to produce less bad results than erring on the side of too hot.

i wish my chemex retained heat better. coffee is cold by the time i am ready for a second cup.

Treeship, Monday, 28 March 2016 18:47 (ten years ago)

that's what i was doing but i would always get distracted during cooling and then it would get too cool and i'd have to reboil again. what's nice about this kettle is it just holds the temperature for you. my coffee isn't necessarily tasting much better but it's a much easier and quicker process now.

the late great, Monday, 28 March 2016 18:47 (ten years ago)

xp yeah that's a problem with chemex. i find leaving the filter with the grounds in on top helps retain heat, sometimes when it's cold i wrap it in a warm, wet dishcloth (not very aesthetically pleasing)

the late great, Monday, 28 March 2016 18:48 (ten years ago)

I asked about chocolate, no, he just reaches for the bag of beans and has at it

μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 28 March 2016 18:49 (ten years ago)

btw the right way to drink chemex is just to pour it all in a giant cup and drink it in one gulp

μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 28 March 2016 18:50 (ten years ago)

i was 100% positive before i googled that it wld return results

make sure you empty the bonavita whenever you're done using it and leave the top off. Had one for tea and it's brilliant but rusts super easily.

the late great, Monday, 28 March 2016 19:13 (ten years ago)

Ordered 5 pounds of Red Bird espresso beans so I can portion out 8oz bags and have quality beans in the freezer for weeks at a time.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Monday, 28 March 2016 21:14 (ten years ago)

Priority shipping was free so it's like $10.50/pound, the nearest local roaster (just meh anyway) is $13/10 oz. Hurray USPS.

Set my ceramic stove top to low and put the chemex on to keep it warm

I have a 16oz Chemex that fills a large mug perfectly, and I always scald the mug w/ boiling water before pouring coffee in so my Chemex coffee is never cold

Cold brew season soon, anyone have a good rec for a big pitcher I can make cold brew in? 1qt mason jars aren't really cutting it.

I have this. It's overpriced but it does the job

Treeship, Tuesday, 29 March 2016 16:16 (ten years ago)

i make it in a regular pitcher (with lid) and strain it through a large paper filter then put it back in the pitcher

lag∞n, Tuesday, 29 March 2016 16:32 (ten years ago)

like just a plastic pitcher or do you have a glass one

petulant dick master (silby), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 16:46 (ten years ago)

trickle-down ergonomics (jim in glasgow), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 16:53 (ten years ago)

I had a Toddy, but it's easier (for me) to just brew in a big mason jar and then pour through a chemex filter. no chance at clumping, etc.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 19:24 (ten years ago)

Tbh my problem with my existing mason jars is just that I refuse to not overfill them.

petulant dick master (silby), Tuesday, 29 March 2016 19:27 (ten years ago)

pitchers are design for easy pourin fellas

lag∞n, Tuesday, 29 March 2016 19:29 (ten years ago)

The thing about coffee is that when you drink it it's like "Unnnnngh, coffee." You're never like "Unnnnnngh, tea," it's more like "Hmmmmm, tea."
