something receiving a "dark" adaptation. amazed that inner desires of an Alice in Wonderland-loving 90s Hot Topic teen are now the aesthetic marks of authenticity for millions of "adults".

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 27 March 2016 16:03 (ten years ago)

Are you referring to Batman Loves Superman, or the wave of new Disney fairy tale adaptations (Maleficent et al)? Cause I dunno if adults are necessarily the audiences for those. Or for Zach Snyder flicks either, for that matter.

Still, "that inner desires of an Alice in Wonderland-loving 90s Hot Topic teen" describes this whole aesthetic quite beautifully.

rhymes with "blondie blast" (cryptosicko), Sunday, 27 March 2016 16:06 (ten years ago)

BvS mostly but yeah can be applied to the rest as well.

You may have a point about the audience. But one of the appeals of the dark adaptation was that it hadn't been done before! There was "Return to Oz" and that's about it. It was kind of a subversion of the familiar way to portray modern fantasy. But now it seems like the default, not an alternative. This was a large part of the appeal.

Then again it does seem like the audience is adults. Does "dark adaptation" sound particularly interesting to kids, who are growing up with that being the default? Or is it a way to cheaply spin material as grown-up and mature to the 30-something adults that need to feel secure in their consumer choices?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 27 March 2016 16:13 (ten years ago)

Isn't BvsS just book 4 of the dark knight returns from '86 or so?

NYC is a good answer tbh. Although it's still the financial and cultural capital it's always been, it has all but completely lost its mystique, its cachet as "the place to be" etc

People's bitching and moaning about being exposed to dancers and musicians on the subways. New Yorkers act like their personal space is luxury real estate.

new yorkers -- and subway riders in particular -- put up with far more personal-space violation than anyone else in america, even apart from performers

most of them don't complain that the elevators aren't reserved for parents with strollers either

a woman went off on me once on the train for personal-space violation (trust me, groundlessly). i told her to move to Kansas City.

I don't know how I'd previously failed to realize that I'm super mindful and touchy about my personal space in most contexts at least in part because I spend two hours of every weekday with my body pressed against those of total strangers.

I Pith On Your Quip (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 13 April 2016 19:23 (ten years ago)

There are totally instances of needless personal space violation on the trains, though. My fave is when someone in a standing room only car decides they need to read a book or the paper and that you would make a lovely bookstand.

Currently done with Tony Bennett. Duets, tributes, documentaries, visual-art dabbling, filmic cameos. No more, please; thanks, I'm all set.

Yo, Tony, baby: sorry you were not as popular as certain other singers (who shall not be named) back in the day. Glad you lived. Glad you have kept working. No, that does not mean you are entitled to dominate the conversation about popular song forevermore. You can keep doing your thing but I personally have heard enough from you to last for quite a while, thanks.
