Are you referring to Batman Loves Superman, or the wave of new Disney fairy tale adaptations (Maleficent et al)? Cause I dunno if adults are necessarily the audiences for those. Or for Zach Snyder flicks either, for that matter.

Still, "that inner desires of an Alice in Wonderland-loving 90s Hot Topic teen" describes this whole aesthetic quite beautifully.

You may have a point about the audience. But one of the appeals of the dark adaptation was that it hadn't been done before! There was "Return to Oz" and that's about it. It was kind of a subversion of the familiar way to portray modern fantasy. But now it seems like the default, not an alternative. This was a large part of the appeal.

Then again it does seem like the audience is adults. Does "dark adaptation" sound particularly interesting to kids, who are growing up with that being the default? Or is it a way to cheaply spin material as grown-up and mature to the 30-something adults that need to feel secure in their consumer choices?

Isn't BvsS just book 4 of the dark knight returns from '86 or so?
