and for people who died a long time ago it just seems really silly. "Irving Berlin would have been 150 today...."

I actually like doing those. I usually go with something like "Mozart would have been 400 today, had he lived."

brb gonna listen to "Suspicions"

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 14 March 2016 15:19 (ten years ago)

mozart is like a famous anniversary guy though. there are genuinely famous death dates.

scott seward, Monday, 14 March 2016 15:22 (ten years ago)

Eh, I don't really mind the dead-person birthday thing. It's the dead-person deathiversary thing that I don't really get, mainly when it's not a round number. I saw a "Charlie Parker died 61 years ago today" post a couple days ago and though, hmmm, maybe save it for his birthday. Or just post "I'm listening to Charlie Parker today." Doesn't have to be because he died an odd number of years ago.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 14 March 2016 15:29 (ten years ago)

yeah, i don't like those either. death days are sad.

scott seward, Monday, 14 March 2016 15:31 (ten years ago)

plus, does anyone even remember the day that someone died? do they have a celebdeathapp on their phone?

scott seward, Monday, 14 March 2016 15:32 (ten years ago)

I always remember when they died more than their birthday.

Like Mel Tormé. He was ... early June of 1999? I remember I was on a roadtrip and it was around the time of the Preakness. Who knows when his birthday was, except maybe Harry Anderson.

pplains, Monday, 14 March 2016 15:34 (ten years ago)

June 5, 1999! See, I did remember.

pplains, Monday, 14 March 2016 15:35 (ten years ago)

i'm pretty sure i only remember john lennon and princess di. lennon in december because it was john lennon and i remember what month it was for pete's sake. princess di was august which i remember because it was the last time i ever saw my sister alive.

that's about it though.

scott seward, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:06 (ten years ago)

wait a minute, keith emerson was trolled to death? keith emerson was killed by keith emerson jokes? okay, this i might actually care enough to read about.

scott seward, Monday, 14 March 2016 16:08 (ten years ago)

Jesus Christ, someone on my facebook timeline wished John Cazale a happy birthday over the weekend. "R.I.P. Gone too soon."

does anyone even remember the day that someone died?

Yes

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bereavement_in_Judaism#Annual_remembrances

"Yahrtzeit, יאָרצײַט, means "Time (of) Year" in Yiddish... The word is used by Yiddish speaking Jews, and refers to the anniversary of the day of death of a relative. Yahrtzeit literally means "time of [one] year". It is widely observed, and based on the Jewish tradition that mourners are required to commemorate the death of a relative... The Yahrtzeit usually falls annually on the Hebrew date of the deceased relative's death according to the Hebrew calendar. "

She's currently touring Australia and doing a few local-media-click-baity things along the way.
