This is super OTM but it immediately made me think of Dick DeBartolo, who you'd think would've been similarly in demand but I can't find information about him ever having done a movie poster. If anyone discovers otherwise, though, it's surefire fodder for this thread.

wikipedia attempts to explain:

I've Gotta Horse was Billy Fury's second hit feature film and as well as a number of human stars including Amanda Barrie, Michael Medwin and Jon Pertwee and pop bands The Gamblers and The Bachelors it featured his own race horse Anselmo as well as several of his own dogs in a musical comedy...Based on the star's famous love of animals, this musical comedy portrays Billy setting out to add a sheepdog to his vast entourage of animals and coming back with an irresistible horse named Armitage instead. To his manager's horror, Billy smuggles the horse backstage during rehearsals for his big show and the horse proceeds to create havoc. Little do either of them know that Armitage is actually a thoroughbred racehorse. Then Billy's horse contracts pneumonia and Billy must choose between love of his horse and the big show.

the films titular song is pretty catchy: https://youtu.be/urYHt3J0WkQ

conspicuous lack of horses on the poster.

Secondarily, this thread is a great reminder of just how many terrible, forgettable and forgotten films Hollywood has put out during every era.

Seriously. I was browsing the Wikipedia page for 1960-something in film and I was like, wtf even are most of these highest grossing movies from 1960-something? Try explaining to your grandchildren what a Fast 5 was.

Telephone Meatballs (Old Lunch), Monday, 7 March 2016 20:43 (ten years ago)

Wasn't Dick DeBartolo more of a writer than an artist?

pplains, Wednesday, 9 March 2016 00:49 (ten years ago)

yes, Old Lunch is thinking of Angelo Torres maybe?

soref, Wednesday, 9 March 2016 00:54 (ten years ago)

Torres is no Drucker or Davis

American Graffiti got posted very early in this thread, but this Spanish-language version is a different, equally claustrophobic design:

Oh, that's first-rate! Right down to proudly announcing its very solidly B- and C-list leads at the top. Looks like real Cannonball Run stuff - I have to assume that the cutaways to the two roller-derby girls are particularly tedious.

I'm on zing, so can't see properly, but if Grisso's last one isn't Davis, it's an excellent imitation

Definitely Davis

Bingo Long - which it turns out I posted itt two years ago when I picked up the tape that I just now finally watched! - is okay-ish, maybe even good. Williams and Jones are really convincing. There's a basic difficulty of telling the story of this roadshow team, which was forced to resort to minstrel-esque performances in games against white home teams, as a comedy. It doesn't ignore the indignities suffered by the players, and pays lip service to some of them (particularly Jones as the Du Bois and Marx-quoting veteran player) taking issue with the strategy. But so much screen time is given over to the over-the-top scheming Negro League owner and other plotty bits of business that the movie can't really wrestle with the subject matter. But if you're just looking for a period sports movie with a lot of montages, and some really likable lead performances, it's all right. (I'm also a suburban white guy born in 1981, so I might relate to the film very differently than its original target audience did.) Standard 1970s warnings re: sexism apply.

Bingo Long makes a surprising appearance in Easy Riders, Raging Bulls: Apparently Spielberg was attached to direct, mainly as a power play to get a film he really wanted to do (Close Encounters, iirc) made.

Now I Know How Joan of Arcadia Felt (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 26 May 2016 17:38 (ten years ago)

Oof, I'm glad that didn't happen. I like Spielberg, but 1941 doesn't inspire confidence that he would have handled comedy, or racially charged material, with any deftness early in his career.

A NSFW addition for Googlers: the German poster for Up The Creek - Das Turbogeile Gummiboot - is redrawn for the style of this thread.
