i too buy from a third wave place thats def on the light-medium spectrum, like they dont even label them as such
i would love to find a smooth choc/tof/caramel/nutty light to medium!! All the ones I find like that are DARK and BITTER, too gross

I find Colombian (non-dark-roast) most reliable for this, especially if you're not shelling out for some kind of super-coddled single estate microlot stuff.
Guatemalan, Costa Rican, Peruvian all also pretty reliable. Avoid Brazilian coffee. African coffees tend to have a more tea-like flavor imo, can be very interesting, subtle and complex but not necessarily what I want in my daily cup.

In Germany they disapprove of u keeping it within the walls of a fortified medieval structure
― Ecomigrant gnomics (darraghmac), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 22:53 (ten years ago)
xp I got an Ethiopian recently that tasted just like bergamot!!! So crazy!!
rn I've got that Guatemalan I mentioned upthread that's really fruity/complex ("WE TASTE: Honey, Vanilla, Mango, Peach" says the website) which is great but I'm gonna ask their recommendation for like a nutty choc tof jawn next time I go

A few more third wave places have come to my attention, mostly in mile end, little Italy and near McGill. Good coffee but not really for me. But yeah the general espresso here is darker - and everywhere, thank god :)
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:53 (ten years ago)
lol "le cof"
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 2 March 2016 23:54 (ten years ago)
my go-to coffee for my ideal, just because it's easiest to find, is Holler Mountain by Stumptown. i can usually find a 12oz bag on sale for $10 at the grocery store.
i've had a few from scattered micro roasters that aren't easy to find that are arguably superior. Verve makes a couple really good ones. Metropolis from Chicago, too.

i have a weird aversion to having any coffee product in a glass. i hate when places give you coffee in a glass. it looks gross!
― #amazing #babies #touching (harbl), Thursday, 3 March 2016 00:24 (ten years ago)
there's a third wave joint near us where they give you the coffee in a mason jar wrapped with a dainty napkin
― nomar, Thursday, 3 March 2016 00:26 (ten years ago)
harbl what do you think of my glass pot
― 龜, Thursday, 3 March 2016 00:47 (ten years ago)

― #amazing #babies #touching (harbl), Thursday, 3 March 2016 00:48 (ten years ago)
i want coffee to be a blackish liquid and it reminds me it's lighter brown
― #amazing #babies #touching (harbl), Thursday, 3 March 2016 00:49 (ten years ago)

yah i have a white ceramic mug (gifted to me by ~in orbit~ many years ago in fact) that makes my cof look pale so i leave it for supposed to be pale drinks like tea and put my cof in dark opaque mug equal to the task

Glass seems to conduct hear better than ceramic, so I burn my lips on a glass cup. Ceramic all the way!
― nickn, Thursday, 3 March 2016 01:57 (ten years ago)
Glass is OK for cold coffee, I should point out. I like seeing it in the glass.
― nickn, Thursday, 3 March 2016 01:58 (ten years ago)
def a nice big pint glass full of ice cof oh yeah
― lag∞n, Thursday, 3 March 2016 01:59 (ten years ago)
I like to drink my cold brew out of hip paper straws like this, get it at yr local twee home goods store http://www.kikkerland.com/products/paper-straws-+-bamboo-144-per-box/
― petulant dick master (silby), Thursday, 3 March 2016 02:30 (ten years ago)
I mean out of a glass, w the straw
Feel like I read something recently in a NYer article about someone well-known who had started out researching things like how the kind of cup you drink out of affects the taste of your coffee, but purely on a perceptive level (e.g. white ceramic made it taste stronger and less sweet or something).

obv I can google this but prefer for thread to explain me "third wave" irt coffee
btw iirc I "introduced" StevieD to pour over not because I am "third wave" (I don't think? obv I don't know what that is) but because I am old and spent many years single and it was just the non-fancy way to make a cup o' joe back in the olden days
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 3 March 2016 03:10 (ten years ago)
I use cheap plastic pour-over thingy and cheap bulk filters from Amazon and pre-ground "Pleasant Morning Buzz" from Whole Foods and yes I am going to die from these things, but oh hey WE ALL GONNA DIE AND PLASTIC PLASTIC POUR OVER WILL NEVER BE "THE" REASON so I lose zero sleeps over this
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 3 March 2016 03:13 (ten years ago)
yeah but do you use a gooseneck kettle at an optimal water temperature, starting with a small pour to bring out the "bloom" and then pouring evenly and slowly in a circling or swirling motion? xp
― on entre O.K. on sort K.O. (man alive), Thursday, 3 March 2016 03:24 (ten years ago)
man, all this extra work you people put in, for ... coffee
― we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 3 March 2016 03:37 (ten years ago)
I do have a gooseneck kettle. I do not use proper h20 temp or swirling technique. I do love a really great coffee but in my house the saying is "you need coffee to make coffee" so just getting in a decent cup first thing without thinking is a priority
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Thursday, 3 March 2016 03:43 (ten years ago)
haha I love that saying!

i often make the catch-22 of coffee joke in the morning at work when people fumble with the coffeepot. partially because people relate, and mostly because it's the only joke i can tell before having coffee

glass is great for iced coffee, otherwise i go with a ceramic mug
― marcos, Thursday, 3 March 2016 16:22 (ten years ago)
what do people think about those Keep Cups that are everywhere
imo they're straight garbage - the 'closer' thingie doesn't actually keep liquid from spilling out, plus the plastic material is so thin it doesn't keep the coffee warm. totally mystified how they have become so popular that even i have one and i hate it.
