Coffee

Back in the 1990s one of my friends had an Argentinian exchange student who introduced us to mate. After he moved on, I bugged the guys at the local natural foods place about it, but they never got around to figuring out how to order the stuff. All banging my head on the shelf with my eyes crossed trying to find it among the goldenseal and thistle teas.

I've had the Guayaki tea bag stuff, which wasn't all that impressive. Maybe its time to run this stuff down again. Anybody got any recs for a good loose mate source?

last 2 times I had it were straight from a thermos my Argentinian landlord was drinking from, and out of a gourd over breakfast w/ this Argentinian dude who I couch-surfed with in Miami. The only thing Argentinians seem to love more than mate is sharing mate w/ other ppl, v hospitable and chill imo.

I think of all of the hot caffeinated beverage cultures, mate totally wins. there's something really trusting and intimate abt sharing a straw or a cup w/ someone.

xps to hows life, just go to hispanic/latino grocery store and you will see cheap bags like this that is way better than anything in a tea bag or bottle:

ive had the taragui brand, rosamonte, amanda, and the canarias and i think i like the taragui and amanda better but they're all good

oh totally, there is very much a social & sharing experience about mate drinking that is very chill and friendly

lol i did do a study abroad program in chile and when my host family saw that i liked mate they were super excited and gave me my own little electric kettle to keep in my room so i could make it whenever i wanted

We don't have many hispanic groceries in my area and the one that I know about is very small, but I'll check them out anyway. Thanks.

I drank mate often when I stopped drinking coffee and caffeinated tea, which was only twice in my life but for year-long stretches. It was nice but it is no coffee. Coffee produces just the right subtle anxiety I need to get the kind of work I do done (deadline lyfe)

That's what I liked about the mate. Peaceful energy. Cleaner buzz. I understand the need to get a little bit rattled though.

I def prefer coffee over mate as a bev but c'mon y'all you'd have to be completely bonkers to argue that 3rd wave coffee culture is like lovelier than mate culture

real talk tho, my new home setup setup (freshly burr-ground beans + pourover w/ a scale) has turned me into SUCH a coff diva that I am like trying to investigate which places grind their own beans. Like even if that shit's brewed in a machine and sits in a carafe for an hour I just want something that tastes ok

i think the trick might be ordering americanos everywhere instead of asking for drip coffee

I did that for a few years

it's expensive

if im not just ordering espresso i will frequently order americanos with an extra shot

i did order a cortado the other day it was really good

It didn't even occur to me that there might be "coffee shops" that don't grind their own beans

like roast, sure, some places get coffee beans in a bag, but there are coffee shops with no grinder??

I hate Americanos fwiw, would much rather have good drip. However I could see an extra shot Americano being ok.

I feel like they always take on a slightly grassy flavor.

are you putting an extra shot of wheatgrass in there?

i'm sure a lot of coffee shops grind their own beans tbh but a lot of times i have to settle for, like, au bon pain or corner market or a local grocery or le pain quotidien or starbucks or some similar dreck
