their corn uhh salsa or whatever they call it is pretty good

the tomato-based salsa are all pretty meh as far as I've found

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 18:31 (ten years ago)

The tomatillo is OK if you want mild.

nickn, Wednesday, 17 February 2016 19:23 (ten years ago)

i like taking the red or green jarred salsa and blending it with loads of cilantro and many habaneros. they're both great bases, imo, but kinda weak by themselves

Edgard Varese is god (of music anyways) (outdoor_miner), Wednesday, 17 February 2016 19:29 (ten years ago)

Playing to the furry crowd, TJ?

Check Yr Scrobbles (Moodles), Saturday, 20 February 2016 20:01 (ten years ago)

the food is good but the ppl *facepalm*

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 20 February 2016 21:14 (ten years ago)

The 'country potatoes with haricot vert and mushrooms' is pretty awesome for a quick side dish, though a bit light on the mushrooms.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 5 March 2016 00:02 (ten years ago)

tjs is decent, but i don't like that they relabel all their products with their name on it. sometimes i want to see what company/manufacturer a product actually belongs to

F♯ A♯ (∞), Saturday, 5 March 2016 00:07 (ten years ago)

Isn't that at the manufacturer's insistence? Don't want to have people stop buying the more expensive "name" version for the TJ version.

nickn, Saturday, 5 March 2016 01:48 (ten years ago)

it's their main point of negotiation, working with suppliers to negotiate mass buys for off-brand goods

i don't think so. the bottle of vinegar i bought at world market looked exactly the same as the one at tj's, the only difference being the logo

F♯ A♯ (∞), Saturday, 5 March 2016 19:57 (ten years ago)

yeah, except world market probably pays a little more per bottle and you pay a little less at TJ's, that's their value proposition

μpright mammal (mh), Sunday, 6 March 2016 00:48 (ten years ago)

The two frozen stir-fry-type dinners I've bought have been not just bad but vomit-inducing, much worse than anything of the sort /i've ever bought from the big grocery stores

stanley krubrick (rip van wanko), Sunday, 6 March 2016 00:59 (ten years ago)

name names!

μpright mammal (mh), Sunday, 6 March 2016 01:01 (ten years ago)

the last one had chicken, mushrooms, and i think snow peas. i think the one before that was kung pao? anyway, staying away from that section . . .

stanley krubrick (rip van wanko), Sunday, 6 March 2016 01:09 (ten years ago)

i don' know how you mess up something so simple, let's just say each main ingredient seemed to combine odd textures and odd flavors

stanley krubrick (rip van wanko), Sunday, 6 March 2016 01:10 (ten years ago)

I've read good things about TJ's California Estate extra-virgin olive oil. Is it truly good? Incl. flavor and good for you?

dow, Sunday, 6 March 2016 01:13 (ten years ago)

The frozen Kung pao chicken is great!!

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 6 March 2016 03:01 (ten years ago)

ok I didn't try the Kung Pao, I had the Chicken Chow Mein which was bad and the Shiitake Mushroom Chicken which was baaaaaad

stanley krubrick (rip van wanko), Sunday, 6 March 2016 03:26 (ten years ago)

I like the shiitake one, usually spice it up, though

μpright mammal (mh), Sunday, 6 March 2016 04:12 (ten years ago)

not product but the stores here have changed their pos system & it's so slow, there's a ridic long lag between each screen & it drives me crazy.

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 6 March 2016 20:39 (ten years ago)

I'm a believer in that olive oil, dow. Very good for that price.

nickn, Monday, 7 March 2016 05:12 (ten years ago)

And I have a bag of that shiitake mushroom chicken in my freezer, think I bought it on a rec here. Haven't tried it yet.

nickn, Monday, 7 March 2016 05:13 (ten years ago)

not product but the stores here have changed their pos system

Here, too. Their new credit card machines take for-fucking-ever.

my go-to TJ's oo has been the kalamata

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Monday, 7 March 2016 14:06 (ten years ago)

omg using a card takes forever at my store too

stanley krubrick (rip van wanko), Monday, 7 March 2016 15:15 (ten years ago)

I use Apple Pay.

Jeff, Monday, 7 March 2016 16:53 (ten years ago)

TJ's Sour Patch Kids equivalent: very very good, brilliant natural flavors, even the colors are cool
Gummy Bears: quite bad

stanley krubrick (rip van wanko), Monday, 7 March 2016 17:23 (ten years ago)

i'm going to do some field sampling. i don't remember the price difference

F♯ A♯ (∞), Monday, 7 March 2016 19:42 (ten years ago)

World Market has had problems keeping their stock fresh, I've found. You kinda never know how long something's been sitting on the shelves.

nickn, Monday, 7 March 2016 19:58 (ten years ago)

i don't shop there usually. i sometimes need non-US products, and they are the ones that carry them

F♯ A♯ (∞), Monday, 7 March 2016 20:11 (ten years ago)

there are deals to be had at world market but it's definitely no substitute for a good ethic grocery store

μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 7 March 2016 20:19 (ten years ago)

It's my connection for my favorite cheap white wine - Rene Barbier Mediterranean White - and their beer deals can be good. I buy some packaged Indian foods and pastas there occasionally.

nickn, Monday, 7 March 2016 21:19 (ten years ago)

lol @ ethnic. i'm buying british products

i'm not about to drive an hour in los angeles traffic to a british shop

F♯ A♯ (∞), Monday, 7 March 2016 21:23 (ten years ago)

blood sausages

Swedish Fish (Scandinavian Swimmers): Bizarre, slightly off-putting

bearded flack trickster god (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 7 March 2016 22:51 (ten years ago)

ew yeah i bought those once and even as a gummi addict i was not really into them. they were really sticky. i stated my thoughts on the gummi polar bears with the goo inside them upthread.

La Lechuza (La Lechera), Monday, 7 March 2016 23:02 (ten years ago)

I tried the orange chicken and loved it, so easy to make too.

I haven't bought the kung pao chicken but I sampled it yesterday and it was terrific, not too spicy either.

musically, Friday, 11 March 2016 19:38 (ten years ago)

the frozen orange chicken is a classic, it used to be their top selling product of all time. not sure if that's still the case

my roommate got a TJ's chocolate babka that looks pretty good, its been sitting on the kitchen table for a couple days and i've been tempted to steal it

ciderpress, Friday, 11 March 2016 19:57 (ten years ago)

yes they are both v v great re: frozen chickens, esp when you whip up some rice to go with them, so easy and yum

police patrol felt the smell of smoke and found that goat burns (Stevie D(eux)), Friday, 11 March 2016 21:32 (ten years ago)

really like the provençal mustard

los blue jeans, Friday, 18 March 2016 00:46 (ten years ago)

Anyone try the cooked pork belly?

I bought a box but gave it to my old neighbor, when she made it it was gray and flavorless... but that describes much of her cooking tbh.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 18 March 2016 01:40 (ten years ago)

Yeah I've had that, it was good

just1n3, Friday, 18 March 2016 07:25 (ten years ago)

yeah I've had that a few times and it's always been great. This recipe for crispy pork belly + kale is awesome http://www.traderjoes.com/recipes/recipe/269
