I'd watch the second tho it meanders. Wright is good and it establishes a bunch of stuff which i imagine will pay off later. Helps a little even with the setup for the third, tho the first gets you most of the way there.

Watched episode 5 tonight. This has become my favorite non-TV, TV show right now.

Steven Wright is so great.

CK tells Howard Stern he's losing millions on this, the former seems basically unconcerned.

I ended up pretty much loving this, though it would have been way better had CK cast a real actor instead of himself (though he's sometimes fine)

everybody on this show sounds like Louis CK talking to himself so subbing in another actor would not have made a noticeable difference to me

louie pulled the interview circuit superfecta now of talking abt this on howard, maron, bill simmons, & Charlie rose in the span of a few wks

he's lost money on the project and now it's done; I presume he's trying to get it sold to a network now.

He's selling the whole series for $31/pop, and then will sell it to Netflix or other later. It doesn't sound like he's scrambling to cover his ass - he wanted to release something without context before doing press, same as Bey et al.

I purchased the whole thing and absolutely loved it. "if you get to ep 3 and don't like it you should probably stop" is OTM advice.

Loved the first ep, keep meaning to get around to the rest.

It felt a little like some album where a load of virtuoso musicians came out and showed you how good they were at playing, but for acting. But I didn't feel it was self-indulgent at all, it was just like a great showcase for some great performances. It felt stagey and theatrical in the best way.

Saw him last night and he absolutely killed. A master at the height of his powers.

More than most comedians he seems to have a real knack for reinventing his sets, and instinctively knows when to put other projects on hold. So he does his show for a while, then stops, then tours, then starts a new show, then stops, then tours. I've seen him a few times, and only once was he less than his best.

i have tickets to the MSG show (first floor seats in the garden!); this'll be the fourth tour for me. He's consistently very good and it's best not to try to retell his jokes.

holy shit, horace and pete is a masterpiece. third episode is astounding (as mentioned above), but not necessarily a giant leap from the first two (as also mentioned above). i didn't watch it when it came out because i didn't want to pay (sorry) and i didn't feel like downloading, but it's on hulu now for those with that option.

his new standup special is great - starts and ends abruptly and maintains that weird balance of incredibly dark + goofiness that he's good at.

eh, I found it pretty hit and miss. When it was good it was quality though.

Do appreciate his thoughtful approach to comedy overall

i thought it was his darkest standup yet (last thing he did was Horace & Pete) but very good.... just hope he's ok!

it is v dark but not uncharacteristically so imo

sweet to see it dedicated to Garry Shandling at the end

he definitely frontloads it with the darkest stuff

Was expecting guy to maybe start fading out (last few seasons of his show have been mostly zzz IMO) but his new standup is sharp as hell. Great SNL monologue too. Still top of the pack.

i was fading on him until i watched horace & pete a few weeks ago. i found the thread and tried to rave revive it, but in retrospect i was performing CPR on a corpse in the haunted woods. anyway, i thought horace and pete was flat-out brilliant and it made me excited about whatever he does next.

I watched the first episode of H&P and felt like he was maybe, uh, up his own ass a bit, taking to heart his ~grim truth telling sad clown/artist~ space but that was probably a shitty read on it. Will give it a full watch soon enough. Probably when I'm less depressed.

i think the reason the corpse cannot be revived is because it's really not a show i'd recommend to anyone. it's so fucking sad. it's reaaaaaally sad, relentlessly so.

that eliminates about 99.9% of his audience but it's too bad because the format of the show is so unique. but even that is offputting - imagine sitting down to an 8-hour play with 10 intermissions. but somehow it works so well.

the first episode is easily the worst, it leans heavily on the "sad assholes talkin bout politics" stuff which is definitely the weakest part of the show

Yeah, I think fundamentally it did come down to "this is too bleak for me right now and I know it's just going to get worse" so I put it aside. One day.

good monologue

The birthday clown piece seemed like something he brought in with him. Really well done.

Didn't really find much of the Netflix standup funny.

I did like when he used the audience member's "CHRIST!!" thruout the "years" bit

most of that monologue was at least two years old; had heard it in concert.

It's like he gave himself the challenge of the toughest subjects to build a comedy set around: abortion, 9/11, ISIS beheadings, rescue dogs, etc.

Loved the quick bit about people before Christ counting down years and not knowing why. Much of it was very good and much better than whatever the last special was.
