I have no idea how many hipsters have invaded ridgewood but you can def find western queens studios under 1300 if you treat it like looking for a job

iatee, Thursday, 4 February 2016 17:30 (ten years ago)

well i already have two jobs including cancer management, so the energy for that is the problem.

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 February 2016 17:34 (ten years ago)

why do you want to live in Ridgewood? If there is a part of Queens with hipsters, that would be the one, but there appear to be similarly priced studios in Astoria and Jackson Heights, and those would be relatively hipster free

also "treat it like looking for a job" otm. Also treat it like paying double the security deposit for the broker's fee

yep. im poor and it's gonna get worse.

one month passes...

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/19/arts/music/ramones-the-story-behind-a-debut-album-from-punk-pioneers.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=story-heading&module=second-column-region®ion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news

But with its raw sound and extremely bare songwriting style, “Ramones” became a founding document of punk rock. For its 40th anniversary, the album is being celebrated with an expanded reissue due this summer from Rhino Records and an exhibition, “Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk,” opening at the Queens Museum on April 10.

The apt above mine is for rent. 1980 for a decent and large 2 bedroom on the 6th floor of an elevator building across the street from a park and convenient to the 7 train, LIRR and M and R trains. Pretty great location and neighborhood.

dan selzer, Friday, 18 March 2016 15:44 (ten years ago)

I really like the Queens Museum but it would be nice if it was just a little more subway accessible, although not that I'd likely take the subway there from Forest Hills anyway

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 18 March 2016 15:55 (ten years ago)

also a little more bus accessible, like if there was a bus that stopped right by it instead of 15 mins walk away

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 18 March 2016 15:56 (ten years ago)

well i'd need a roommate, DS

wow p much everything I said upthread about my first Forest Hills impressions turned out 100% true. Neighborhood seems to be getting more packed with families but not otherwise more appealing in terms of restaurants and good places to go with kids. A somewhat deadening neighborhood but could be worse. Think we're basically going to stay though unless we get rich enough to move to either Brooklyn again or Westchester.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 18 March 2016 16:28 (ten years ago)

I hear there's a great deal on an apartment in Woodside.

dan selzer, Friday, 18 March 2016 18:14 (ten years ago)

what's it like there these days?

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 18 March 2016 19:07 (ten years ago)

It's great, mostly.

Did anyone go to the Queens International Night Market last year? We went opening night but it was so mobbed we had to leave. I think it improved after but we never went back. Starting up again soon.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 1 April 2016 14:11 (ten years ago)

Only went opening night and it was a total shit-show. I think they worked it out better as the season when on as well.

dan selzer, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:04 (ten years ago)

One thing I will definitely do if I go again is take the bus instead of drive.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 1 April 2016 16:05 (ten years ago)

You can usually find parking in Corona if you drive around a bit.

Last time we took the 7 but the 7 was only running as far as Junction Blvd so we walked the rest of the way. Then we walked home and stopped and got tacos for an actual meal.

dan selzer, Friday, 1 April 2016 16:35 (ten years ago)

Is there a best Trade Fair supermarket?

There was some kind of big deal drummer at the Terraza jam session tonight.

You going?

Yer Blois (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 10 April 2016 19:06 (ten years ago)

yes. I think a lot of people are going to be there. a lot of brooklyn artsy types I know are going. Not sure of the timing or if we're going to drive or not though.

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 April 2016 19:13 (ten years ago)

Is a certain Queens-based cartoonist previously discussed upthread going to be there?

Yer Blois (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 10 April 2016 19:16 (ten years ago)

I dunno.

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 April 2016 19:28 (ten years ago)

I dunno.

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 April 2016 19:28 (ten years ago)

How smart an I? Parked by Empanadas Cafe for a snack. 15 min walk to museum. Drive by, looks like there's some food trucks too

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 April 2016 19:57 (ten years ago)

Is that a Replacement's reference?

Yer Blois (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 10 April 2016 20:32 (ten years ago)

Nope.

This is a shitshow btw

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 April 2016 20:44 (ten years ago)

Can only imagine.

Yer Blois (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 10 April 2016 21:32 (ten years ago)

Have had a couple bad experiences with Queens Museum events. Although one good one too.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Sunday, 10 April 2016 23:10 (ten years ago)

we didn't even bother going into the ramones exhibit. There was a 2 hour wait and people still coming. We figure we can go back any time in the next few months.

The not very well marked theater with a series of video shorts looping including one from friends that I knew about and another that I didn't realize included people I knew were all pretty good to pretty great.

Some of the stuff in the open studios was very good, although the one that was the most interesting to us, the guy totally ignored us. First time I really wanted to talk to the artist and were the only people in the space and it seemed like he went out of his way to avoid us.

Some of the other art was great, will have to go back when it's not crowded.

The bands were fun.

dan selzer, Monday, 11 April 2016 03:20 (ten years ago)

Queens Museum has p much never been crowded any time I've gone except for events. Has a lot of potential, still feels like they are feeling out the best way to use the spaces at times.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Monday, 11 April 2016 03:27 (ten years ago)

This screen name is actually Queens-related, very specific to my location.

This one is not.

Times has a cute feature today w/ Joey's bro Mickey at the exhibit

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 April 2016 16:39 (ten years ago)

I feel like Queens is going to seem a lot better when my kids are both old enough that it's easier to ride the bus -- something like jazz at flushing hall would be perfect for that, e.g., whereas parking around there is nightmarish.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 15 April 2016 16:50 (ten years ago)

bustime.mta.info is your friend.

I interacted with Joey's brother Mickey once in a funny way, don't know if I related to any of you before.

Freakshow At The Barn Dance (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 15 April 2016 16:54 (ten years ago)

I more mean that they need to be big enough to not be in strollers -- taking a kid and a stroller onto a bus is a huge pain in the ass.

human life won't become a cat (man alive), Friday, 15 April 2016 16:56 (ten years ago)

Right, sorry, I wasn't directly addressing your concern, just mentioning that that website is quite useful.

Freakshow At The Barn Dance (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 15 April 2016 16:58 (ten years ago)

three weeks pass...

What are those three rotating black thingies on top of The Pearson LIC near Court Square? Hifalutin turban fan replacements?

The Pizza Underground Is Massive (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 12 May 2016 21:44 (ten years ago)

I'm not too fond of them and stuff of that sort, of which there is a lot in LIC. Really bad architectural elements all over the place.
