Been having some hip/glute issues. Start getting twinges of pain once I reach double digit mileage, causing my form to break down. Seeing a doc today. I don't think it's terribly serious, but it is annoying.
Still need to pick a fall marathon.
― Jeff, Friday, 29 January 2016 13:24 (ten years ago)
Doc said I have Gluteal Tendinopathy. Not serious. Hip strengthening and some manual therapy to treat it.

Good job!
Since the thread was bumped, an update on my running. Hip pain has gone away since the last post I made. Working through a 14 week base building plan that I adapted from a Pfitzinger book, Faster Road Racing. Lots of easy miles with the only speed each week being strides or a short tempo. Looking to peak at 60 miles a week before the end of June. I'm already over 380 miles for the year. While not my best, I ran more in 2013, it's much better than I've done one Jan/Feb/Mar for the last two years.
Assuming I survive that, I'm going to try the Pfitzinger marathon plan that maxes out at 70 miles a week. It's intense, and I probably won't survive, but I want to see if I can do it. I may cut back to the 55 max plan once I get into it. The mid-week long runs (Up to 15 miles) that the Pfitzinger plan has are going to be hard for me, just because of a lack of time. I'm either going to have to get up at 4:00 AM to do them, or start them around 8:00 PM at night. Looking to run a full marathon in late October, haven't decided on which one. Feels like I'm on the right track. I may fail miserably, but I feel pretty good right now.

"maxes out at 70 miles a week" jfc
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 18:32 (ten years ago)
It is a commitment, for sure. During my last serious marathon training, I maxed out at 63 miles. In this one, most weeks are going to be over 50 miles a week for the majority of plan up to taper. Schedule:

― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 19:39 (ten years ago)
My weekly mileage leading up to starting this plan is going to be 42, 42, 45, 41, 41, 46, 49, 49, 53, 56, 56, 60. Like I said, I'll probably have a good idea by then if this intense of a schedule is feasible.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 19:41 (ten years ago)
One thing I don't get is the three tune-up races in the last 7 weeks of training, usually followed by a 17+ mile run on Sunday.
I know what he's trying to do there, but I don't think I'm going to be able to do that. I don't like racing that much, and I'm going to play it conservative in that regards.

I'd say I've been consistent over the last six weeks.

I'll think about it.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 22:55 (ten years ago)
been wanting to do it for ages and it's once every two years - even though there's no way i'm ready for it, i just could not wait any longer. followed last year's race online and just watching the little dots make their way round the map day after day was hugely inspiring. sleep deprivation will be the worst of it but other than that it's just a few days alone bumbling around the countryside
― real orgone kid (NickB), Wednesday, 27 April 2016 23:04 (ten years ago)
yay, ive been running. it's hard, but since i'm kind of warning about ever really getting into riding again (i had a really bad crash), and i probably wont fall too bad while running, i run. how ya been runners?
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Thursday, 28 April 2016 21:51 (ten years ago)
*warned against*
oh shit, i hadn't been following any of the cycling threads - what happened hunt3r? (& welcome to the running fold btw!)
― real orgone kid (NickB), Thursday, 28 April 2016 22:29 (ten years ago)
I got hit commuting home, broke my skull and stuff, and spent a couple months in the hospital. I've been out of hospital since Oct., and I'm pretty functional, but the risks that would go with another head injury (and temporarily, a shoulder re-injury), make my rules pretty limiting for bikes. I still ride many days, but it's short, and indoors or very traffic controlled.
The day I got cleared by Ortho to lift stuff with my rebuilt shoulder last week, I went for a run, as I have been doing, and fell over a sidewalk crack, which was really violent and really funny. Broke my phone, but my head and clavicle were fine. Just keep running just keep running.
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:02 (ten years ago)
i had been wondering about that --- that's rough stuff, man, but i'm glad you're back and making headway
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:07 (ten years ago)
Thanks gbx. Ever see crash reel? Hospital was mi casa, doc was my doc. Good treatment, lots of luck.
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:25 (ten years ago)
i have not seen that! glad you're doing better
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 28 April 2016 23:38 (ten years ago)
Holy shit hunt3r, that's horrific. Sorry for you that you've lost cycling - sounds like you're a lucky guy to be back on your feet again, but it must be like your wings have been clipped. Really glad to hear you're mending though!
― real orgone kid (NickB), Friday, 29 April 2016 05:54 (ten years ago)
Thanks! Cycling's still there, I just have to be pretty respectful of downside risks, and respectful to others who love me more than I love bikes. They actually remember what happened, I just laid around and got better. I do recommend that movie if you ever get curious about TBI (and psychology of elite competitors, which is also as different as their physical capabilities in many cases).
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Friday, 29 April 2016 15:14 (ten years ago)
quite a bit less life-changing, but: has anyone here popped an ACL? i did mine last week :-/
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 29 April 2016 16:48 (ten years ago)
I can't offer info, but I'm sorry to hear it. I hear so many broadly different descriptions of the circumstances and suffering in these injuries, I hope yours hasn't been too terrible. Speedy recovery!
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Saturday, 30 April 2016 04:50 (ten years ago)
oof gbx. how the heck did you do that?
― real orgone kid (NickB), Saturday, 30 April 2016 09:02 (ten years ago)
yeah, it seems to go from "i felt a pop during x but limped it out" to "hellacious pain needed a board."
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Saturday, 30 April 2016 14:33 (ten years ago)
mine was "felt a pop playing soccer but walked it off" --- doc says i could ~probably~ go back to all my usual activities without surgery with the (in my case) very large exception of skiing
i'm gonna wait and see, there's no urgency at this point since i'm allllllmost walking like a normal person again (week and a half out)
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Saturday, 30 April 2016 15:08 (ten years ago)
Solid progression.

uhg im so fat from weight lifting makes me bad at running

Never lift anything. My motto.
― Jeff, Monday, 9 May 2016 00:42 (ten years ago)
^^ wrong! I've been doing lots of little workouts w 5-10 lb weights over the last 6 months and can totally tell that it helps w running. Feels great and totally easy if you stick with it at least every other day
(Plus you get a little swole and I'm told the ladies love that)
― tobo73, Monday, 9 May 2016 02:54 (ten years ago)
Oh, sure, not saying it's the right thing at all! But a man's got to live by a code, and that's mine.
― Jeff, Monday, 9 May 2016 10:58 (ten years ago)
I do have some concerns. As I'm approaching 50 mile weeks, I'm basically doing the same physical motions for 6 hours a week. Your body becomes really accustomed to that movement, so much that other types of movement become... Unwelcome. So I feel incredibly stiff/slow if I try and do anything else, like jumping or lateral movement. I'm in constant fear that I'm going to pull or strain something.
― Jeff, Monday, 9 May 2016 16:09 (ten years ago)
I've been improving a lot this year, but still feel like an eternal beginner. Since starting back up again in March, I had made noticeable improvements in distance, endurance and pace. I'm still talking about distances less than 2 miles, three or four times per week. But it started to feel like I was really getting somewhere. I had added in warm-ups, cool-downs, and stretches toward the end of last year, which I had previously neglected and always led to me being sidelined due to injuries.
So last Monday I started feeling some mild, but troubling foot and shin pain on my run. I skipped Wednesday and rode the exercise bike in our office gym (which is like a prison, I never fucking want to use their machines). Tried going out again on Friday and made it about halfway around my route without problem before the pain returned and I had to walk it the rest of the way.
Do I sit it out another week and try again or just go ahead and make a doctor's appointment now?
― how's life, Monday, 9 May 2016 16:35 (ten years ago)
I'd go ahead and see a doc. It usually takes awhile to get in with one for me, so I'll make the appt and just cancel if everything mends itself.
― Jeff, Monday, 9 May 2016 16:45 (ten years ago)
id just rest personally unless u have reason to believe youve srsly damaged something
― lag∞n, Thursday, 12 May 2016 21:15 (ten years ago)
I was in the clinic while you posted that. Fortunately I got a doc who runs. It's just shin splints, but she referred me to an orthopedist just to check things out. I'm pretty sure I'll go just to check it out once.
Thinking about switching from sidewalks to grass/paths. That would make me less prone to injuries, right? I run on the National Mall, but have stuck to the sidewalks. No one ELSE runs off the sidewalks, but I'm realizing that there's no reason that I can't. I can still follow my usual route for the most part.
― how's life, Friday, 13 May 2016 00:40 (ten years ago)
running on a softer surface cld help some and running on uneven ground is supposed to be good for reducing repetitive type injuries, i personally do most of my milage on very hard concrete these days, to some extent yr body is prob just adjusting to running and likely has various kinks that need to be worked out, which is something that happens over time as you build a base of milage, as long as you mange to not get too injured to run along the way, the other thing thats crucial is having good form, prob the most important thing is to run light, try to avoid pounding the ground, you can literally listen to yr footsteps and hear how much noise theyre making, then from there you can try to work on more subtle aspects
― lag∞n, Friday, 13 May 2016 03:34 (ten years ago)
Ran my first 10k distance workout in maybe 5 years. 10th k was like 150 ft of vert at 10%, haertbreak hill. It's actually named Jackass Hill, which is better.
― wishy washy hippy variety hour (Hunt3r), Sunday, 15 May 2016 18:29 (ten years ago)
All hills are jackasses. Even slight inclines.
― Jeff, Sunday, 15 May 2016 18:52 (ten years ago)
hills r good
― lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 00:39 (ten years ago)
Mile race yesterday.... 5:58. Splits: ok good/ugh/ugggghhhh/kicked hard. Should be at least 10-15 seconds faster.
― Jeff, Monday, 23 May 2016 11:36 (ten years ago)
Also went running in Red Rock Canyon last week. Very difficult and technical trail, twisted my ankle like 7 times.
