The consensus among those who were notified is that Twitter’s silence is likely because of a gag order imposed by a National Security Letter, a powerful tool used by the U.S. government and law enforcement to compel telecommunications companies, technology providers and Internet service providers to turn over customer data. In December, a gag order on a 2004 NSL imposed upon Nicholas Merrill, owner of defunct ISP Calyx was lifted and for the first time the scope of a NSL was revealed. In Merrill’s specific case, the FBI not only sought detailed personal subscriber information, but browser history, IP addresses the subscriber connected to, email addresses, screen names and online aliases associated with the account, plus six months worth of online purchases. The FBI also sought a radius log, which includes cell tower-based tracking information.

"They can survive as a public company even with a low valuation and even with annoying shareholder pressure," says Kathleen Smith, principal at Renaissance Capital. But, she adds, "at a low valuation may have strategic value to companies such as Google, Facebook, and NewsCorp."

― flopson, Monday, 25 January 2016 17:23 (eight years ago) link
He's back under a different name. Greenwald was also asking Support about this, oddly.
There's speculation it's partly because he writes a lot of stuff about Saudi regime marketing bros but that seems a massive stretch. He does actively troll / harass people but no worse than a million other accounts.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 16:39 (eight years ago) link
wait, who are the #alt journos precisely?
RE Reed and TNC: all the "he thinks he's baldwin, but HE'S NOT BALDWIN and he has NOTHING TO SAY" stuff just makes him sound dumb. the thing that pissed me off about the TNC sanders reparations piece wasn't so much the reparations thing (although IMHO he should have included the obama quotes on reparations from 2008 in the text of the original article), it was starting from the position that Sanders is completely unelectable and should just be a washboard for our wildest policy dreams. and like, TNC is such a good writer and makes you sit back all contemplative, feeling smart for having considered all the possibilities... but it's primary season, man, and the actual effect of him writing that piece is a bunch of smug fence-sitting libs feeling vindicated for backing hillary
― flopson, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 17:03 (eight years ago) link
bernie is obvs a huge risk electability wise and i dont think its unclean to point that out, also if he did win via being matched up v trump that his presidency cld be a huge disaster is worth thinking abt at least, tnc and krugman calling him a fraud is weird tho like hes def less of a fraud than most politicians which is not to say he is without fault but their criticism seems to exist in some sort of weird bubble where hes not running against the people hes running against
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 17:50 (eight years ago) link
I don't see the problem w tnc's piece really
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 18:03 (eight years ago) link
But I'm prob a smug fence sitter who wd be ok w backing Hillary
― Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 26 January 2016 18:04 (eight years ago) link
i am too, idk the article just incensed me cause it seemed to take the position of, 'well this guy is unelectable and can ask for anything he wants so why doesn't he ask for this policy which is infinitely more unpopular than anything else on his already controversial and legislatively impossible platform and that i also wrote a masterful longform essay calling for (well except that said essay wasn't really a straightforward argument pro reparations but more of a complex historical tour of factors causing racial wealth inequality since slavery and i even admit in the essay itself the political impracticality of the policy in the near future)' when like, idk bernie is probably thinking he has some kind of a shot, genuinely wants some kinda revolution and is polling pretty good numbers. like it's amazing he has as much of a shot as he does on the platform he has, saying he should go even further is like those communists who immediately denounced Syriza
― flopson, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 21:09 (eight years ago) link
how is Twitter reacting to TNC clobbering Clinton today over her Confederate take on Reconstruction?
Clinton's presidency being a huge disaster is also worth thinking abt at least (as well as her 'electability' christ what an asshole word)

that whole article is undermined by this idea, though:
Twitter isn’t where I made memories. On the contrary, it’s a void that sucked up opportunity to form them. There’s nothing tangible about that.
she just sounds confused.
