I never totally connected with Bowie either, which always troubled me, cuz he was deified by all the coolest ppl
― Pancho and Left Eye (rip van wanko), Monday, 11 January 2016 16:36 (ten years ago)
I don't have a problem people with people not caring about Bowie tbh (or Elvis, Michael Jackson, John Lennon, Dylan whoever)

Cosign Bowie. It's sad when anyone dies too young, and he seemed like a decent chap, but the flood of mourning today on Facebook and in here makes me feel like an outsider
So this was how the world told me that David Bowie had died.
I ain't even mad. But last night, I was thinking about Tuomas' post. Since when has 69 been "too young" to die?
― pplains, Friday, 15 January 2016 19:53 (ten years ago)
many grim years yet, new vistas in compromised human existence

Bowie's species has an average lifespan of 812 years, hence the 'too young'.

Could've swore Grizzly Adams had died years ago.
But then again, maybe I was thinking of the bear.

Bowie's death. Sadly it's just a headline for me. Will mourn him in five years from now or something

i used to be v dismissive of ppl who didn't follow politics ("don't they want to know about the things that impact them?") but then i had a friend who is one of the brightest ppl i know and a v impressive behavioral psychologist who just found all politics boring and if anything i felt like she exerted a greater influence over elements of her life than i ever had so now i feel like politics are probably just a game show and i think the same about ppl who ignore it as i do about ppl who don't watch game of thrones which is that they're probably saving their time.
― Mordy, Friday, 29 January 2016 19:05 (ten years ago)
politics are bad, but also important. thanks for listening to my ted talk
― ciderpress, Friday, 29 January 2016 19:07 (ten years ago)
a lot of the following of politics through the media feels like following sports through the media. youre getting a partial and generally not really very in-depth view of the public relations activities of individuals and organizations involved in these spheres conveyed through well-worn clichés and stock-phrases and ultimately quite unconnected to the actual meat-and-potatoes reality of these areas of activity and you think some of these folks are good guys and others bad guys, often without too much basis
― Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Friday, 29 January 2016 19:08 (ten years ago)
especially strange to me is people who are obsessive followers of politics whose only political activity is voting.
― Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Friday, 29 January 2016 19:09 (ten years ago)
I wish to shit that I didn't follow politics. I only devote a small percent of my day to thinking about it/checking the news/etc, but I 'm sure it continues to affect me negatively even when I'm not consciously thinking about it.
― how's life, Friday, 29 January 2016 19:12 (ten years ago)
good thread do u think you should follow politics do you think following politics is good for you
― Mordy, Friday, 29 January 2016 19:15 (ten years ago)
y but make sure it's a poll thread that I can not bother voting in
― jaggered little poll (wins), Friday, 29 January 2016 20:17 (ten years ago)
politics only doesn't affect you if you're in a subset of americans living a safe middle class lifestyle, e.g. my little brother w/ a chronic disease only was able to get insurance because 'politics' so yeah it does matter to follow it more than game of thrones for a lot of people. finding politics boring is a luxury.

paradoxically politicians, the political press, and the main consumers of political journalism are in the main living a safe middle class lifestyle
― Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Friday, 29 January 2016 20:34 (ten years ago)
i'm pretty sure that politics effects the middle class too. and that all kinds of people don't care about politics. not just the luxurious middle class.
― scott seward, Friday, 29 January 2016 20:35 (ten years ago)
a certain subset of the middle class probably the only people who have the time and money to care about anything anymore. the rich are too busy counting their money and the poor to busy being poor.
― scott seward, Friday, 29 January 2016 20:39 (ten years ago)

― iatee, Friday, January 29, 2016 8:24 PM (11 minutes ago)
this is sort of aggrandized since implicit in the original is that the safe middle class psychologist is not interested in politics, because not implicated by politics
so to be interested or not interested is sort of arbitrary, non-existential decision, parlour game like tv shit vs newspaper (according to mordy)
the person whose life depends on political decisions that they cannot help but notice, is not really 'interested in politics' in that sense either
― smoothy doles it (nakhchivan), Friday, 29 January 2016 20:41 (ten years ago)
