Ha, wow, I honestly didn't realize there was s6. I still love the first two seasons.

Oh, I mean 5 and 6 then. Was a good 3 year gap between the end of 4 and the last couple but I enjoyed them.

I hope Chevy never listens to the commentary tracks...

yeah, 5 and 6 are very good and funny for how beleagured the productions were. both of them are more like reboots than continuations - I think composer Ludwig Goransson was the only person who continued across all seasons? - and 6 is a separate reboot from 5.

The first half of season 5 is great, but it really loses some heart after Troy left. By the time they got to 6 it was really obvious that the whole thing was being propped up way after the end of its natural lifespan, and it just fizzled out at the end.

Natural lifespan of a community college education = 2 years

Srsly, s3 was hit and miss for me and I found s4 unwatchable. Any chance 5&6 would be worth it?

They're hit-and-miss but definitley better than S4. That season's a whole different deal, no Harmon and all that.

Keith David and Paget Brewster, along with a (mostly) more relaxed tone make season 6 really great, imo.

Just finished season three again and wow it is so obvious that Donald Glover had a compressed schedule so they just filmed all the air conditioner repair school stuff in one go and slotted it around the rest.

Might also have been to film all of Goodman’s scenes.

So Donald Glover is finally taking part in a Community event, a charity virtual table read. Just not sure that the middle of a Monday afternoon work day for most of the country makes a ton of sense, but do they just assume no one is working?

i watched the table read, it was really great, especially when pedro pascal kept breaking at the end.

man, donald glover could've been the best comedic actor of his generation. he is...not the best musician of his generation, but he headlined coachella, so it seems to be working fine for him.

don't sleep on the comedic aspects of Atlanta

To his credit, Atlanta is so good its comedic aspects come in, like, third.

he's great in atlanta (as an actor and the creative mind behind it), but i still think his greatest talent is in broader, more overtly comedic styles.

he could've been eddie murphy, but it's just as well that he chose to be donald glover instead (let's not talk about childish gambino)

when this thread began I doubt anyone here could have predicted much of what happened with Glover's career. "He could have been the next Eddie Murphy" is a weird take, since people in the future will be saying "he could be the next Donald Glover."

Yeah, I have no problem with the current Donald Glover or his c/v.

alls im sayin is that if he didn't have the ambition to become the world-conquering polymath that he is today and he decided to stick to his original milieu, he could've been equally successful. cause he's an outrageously talented comedic actor.

It's hard to say what his milieu is, exactly. Writer? Performer? Actor? Musician? Director? The weakest link on his resume seems to be movies. What made him (and really everyone) in Community so great is their gifts as team players. They're all "stars," even if by narrative default they orbit Joel McHale.

Def. one of those shows where every character/actor could (and sometimes did) anchor an entire episode.

having a successful/critically acclaimed prestige tv show that you created, star in and are the executive producer on, whose production gets delayed because you have to be Lando in a new Star Wars film, while also having a v successful music career (much more than Eddie Murphy ever had for a start) is a strange kind of failure.

Before he became a sitcom actor on Community, he had already been part of a live sketch comedy group, a UCB improviser, a youtube writer/performer with millions of views, a salaried sitcom writer, a stand-up comedian, and had co-written a theatrically-released movie.

His original milieu, before all of those, was being in New York University's sketch team: it's fair to say that writing a couple of skits a month, which were performed anonymously by an ensemble at one free show monthly, exclusively to college students, would not have made him equally as successful if he'd kept it up for 18 years instead of doing a bunch of other things.
