Speaking of those other segments, where are we headed with the personal arc of Nathan, this socially awkward guy who can't seem to find his place in this world?

That's always prominent. I try to draw as much as I can from real experiences and feelings I've had and bring them into the show. This season, structurally, we have more full stories that span an entire episode. I'm thinking about identity a little bit more this year. The season culminates in a finale that I think is the most ambitious thing I've ever done. It took me eight months of physical training just to pull it off. I can't go into specifics, but it's very elaborate and really crazy (laughs). A lot of things that happen this season will culminate in the finale.

Yeah it's almost frightening...I heard him say that on the Best Show. It's kind of hard to imagine what could out-concept episodes like the robot pants-puller.

it’s tempting to imagine what might happen if Netflix or FX opened their coffers and gave Kaufman carte blanche to return to television with his own show

FX already tried this last year w/ a Kaufman pilot starring John Hawkes, Michael Cera, Sally Hawkins, and Catherine Keener - they passed on taking it to series.

i moved recently and, as I tend to do, I got rooked into helping the movers to "keep things going" and i found myself unloading the truck for an hour or so before finally tapping out and the lead mover was like "cmon man, you can do it, stick with it" and i realized i was part of The Movement

Home for xmas, one brother has predictably watched the entire series (thankfully, as the Garbarino book is one of the presents I bought him) and the other has never heard of it. And my gf only got as far as a couple of episodes from season 2. Looks like a holiday marathon is in the cards.

I showed family the Hero episode over Christmas and they thought Nathan Fielder was a sociopath. Definitely made me feel a little weird, especially after talking up how funny it was.

Like, I tried to explain that the comedy was all about the "layers", you know, and how it was a statement about modern times, but that didn't seem to fly.

people who don't get this show REALLY don't get this show and look at you like something's wrong with you that you do.

I definitely think the show is super funny and layered and a nuanced satire of fame and fortune *AND* Nathan Fielder is almost definitely a sociopath; those things aren't mutually exclusive

Right. He also conceives and writes the bits. Either way, there are lots of performers who even "in character" could not do the things that he is doing to real people.

as with all shows involving real people, whoever is on there has entered into a contract trading their privacy for the ability to be on teevee and that's a devil's bargain at best. i feel better about the way the people Nathan lampoons are treated than, say, the cast of Survivor. At least no one on N4U is injured! And he has regular return performers!

Yeah I'm not sure Nathan is hurting anyone with his character beyond testing their endurance to withstand excessive awkwardness.

The Daddy's Watching/party planner episode might have been my favorite except it also had the weight loss bit which was the first one that really crossed into unnecessary cruelty for me. But I was so happy when he brought back the Bill Gates impersonator.
