we took pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce to my kid's class today (in france) and it was the first time any of them had had either of those. pumpkin pie was a hit (like pain d'épices, one girl noted) but the cranberry sauce received more mixed reviews. too acidic, some complained. we also answered questions about the usa for about two hours, like "what's a NY taxi like", "how tall are the buildings in the usa" (they meant New York), "are the police nice there" (um, tricky one). they asked if jazz was a big thing in the usa (I think the teacher has been talking a lot about jazz) and they asked if there are a lot of celebrities in the usa, mostly so they could name ones they know (like will smith & marilyn monroe). oh and they asked if barack obama could stay president longer.

is green bean casserole something favored more by German-Americans than those of other ethnic ancestry? Is it a class thing?

my aunt and uncle moved, and now, as shorthand, refer to their old house by its street number: 420

For about 3 minutes, my throat closed up early in dinner. We think it was the oysters.

Dinner was lunch this time around due to other obligations on the part of my girlfriend's family, but it was nice, didn't expect that. Full meal, eleven people, two young kids, all good. That and everything was essentially cleaned up and set aside in leftover containers by 3 pm. And happily I have claimed the excellent smoked turkey remains for stock tomorrow at home.

@ConanOBrien
Finally, a Thanksgiving without a drunken uncle. Just me, my nieces and nephews and my bottle of Jack Daniels.

Is there a BLACK FRIDAY follow-on for this thread? Because I need to post somewhere about how adorable it was people-watching grandparents in the Lego Store at the mall today

El Tomboto, Saturday, 28 November 2015 00:38 (ten years ago)

"We need the deep sea ocean explorer set. Oh! Yes that one. So what comes in this?" And if any retail drones were actually having anything resembling a good day today, it was the Lego Store people.

And maybe the ones at the Apple and Microsoft stores because them folks was MOVIN' UNITS.

Lastly, there was a big Nintendo kiosk where I got to watch granddads playing Mario Maker, next to pretty much the whole spectrum of humanity playing Splatoon against each other, next to three teenage girls getting very vocal about their co-op Triforce Heroes experience. All told a very nice tonic against shit in the news. I figured Black Friday at Tyson's Corner would have been a total disaster area, but no, it felt more like "you know how we beat ISIS? Consumerism, bitches!"

one year passes...

The time approaches.

Thankfully, the only thing I have to bring to tomorrow's feed is cider and wine. Though I am considering getting some mirepoix just so I can get started on stock immediately after said feed (my girlfriend's family eats around 1 pm).

We have no local family, and all of our extended family, including International travelers, will be here next week. So no hosting or attending Thanksgiving for us this year. For the third time ever we will be going to a restaurant. For the sake of convenience and random adventure, we have chosen Milwaukee.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 22:14 (eight years ago)

Never heard of that restaurant.

Jeff, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 22:15 (eight years ago)

Ned has a gf?

calstars, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 22:17 (eight years ago)

xpost It's about an hour and a half north of Chicago. Big space. Lots of seating.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 November 2017 22:17 (eight years ago)

I'm a regular visitor there, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors.

My parents decided to accept an invite they cannot safely drive to at the house of a distant aunt. I offered to drive, and they rejected the offer, miffed. Then, my sister and her kid and my wife and I told my parents that we would bring thanksgiving to them, and do all the cooking, cleaning, etc. Parents said sure, so we all uninvited myself from the distant aunt. Then, my sneaky parents reinvited themselves to the distant aunt, to which they will be driving.... but my sister and her kid and my wife I are now stuck w/o plans. Sister and I live fairly far apart, so we decided not to meet up. My wife and I are going out for seafood, because our oven is broken and we can’t cook at home. Happy fucking 2017.

rb (soda), Thursday, 23 November 2017 01:08 (eight years ago)

*Parents said sure, so we all uninvited OURSELVES from the distant aunt.
