500 days of kristin is the best part of gawker because it's the most inexplicable. (unless they are on the take from her pr team. then it's very explicable.)
― Treeship, Monday, 30 November 2015 22:56 (ten years ago)
the one day of kristin where they posted the bottom half of the photo was the best
― bricc baby hitlo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 30 November 2015 23:03 (ten years ago)
i don't get mad at 500DoK but it feels like such a self-loathing inside joke about inside jokes, purely for Gawker employees to laugh about what they can get away with that Gawker readers have no use for (besides the really desperate-to-be-part-of-the-gang kinja folks). if it was used as some indulgent daily writing exercise from a nostalgic Laguna Beach stan i would kinda be down with it, but most days it's just a spiteful minimal effort thing that i guess actually counts toward somebody's paycheck.

It's a statement of core values: there can't be anything creepy or even subject to morality about what we do to you with material you put out there.
― Andrew Farrell, Monday, 30 November 2015 23:52 (ten years ago)
The greatest thing ever would be to have a page views ticker in every Gawker subhead. And then a running list of most popular articles, by magnitude, in a sidebar.

it's not the most imaginative gimmick but i would actually want to read at least the first few entries of a thing like that

wait a second. maybe that's it? maybe that's supposed to be the daily off-topic messageboard thread, sorta? in an attempt to build a community to exists apart from the article itself, sorta like the general 77 hangout thread in relation to the usual topic-specific threads? i mean there are over 200 comments on today 500DofK entry, that's insane

a gang of kristin commenters sent allie a handwritten, signed card and pendant (related to kristin in some way) on the occasion of 250 (i believe) which is to say that there is an actual cult readership of some sort at this point. at this point there is also the pure endurance factor which is a spectacle in its own right.
i don't think it was started as an inside joke. it's satire, and it what the series is laughing about isn't that hard to understand (not that hundreds of people haven't loudly expressed their bafflement of what it all means). but it was created for employees of gawker to laugh at, which is true for basically everything that has ever appeared on the site.

tic tac toe strategies you figured out in second grade
― μpright mammal (mh), Tuesday, 1 December 2015 15:16 (ten years ago)
the correct tic tac toe strategy is to place your first piece in a corner, your second piece directly adjacent to whatever space your opponent just did, then bend over and tie their shoes together and steal their wallet
― Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 December 2015 15:19 (ten years ago)
that also works for chess

http://gawker.com/mark-zuckerberg-will-donate-massive-fortune-to-own-blin-1745573343
so dumb. i think when you've decided to donate $45 billion dollars to charity, it should probably be ok how you decide to spend it. what is biddle even worried about? that zuckerberg will get unfair recognition for a philanthropic decision that is not the ideal philanthropic decision?
― Mordy, Wednesday, 2 December 2015 18:23 (ten years ago)
don't really find it dumb at all personally. zuckerberg has failed in philanthropic efforts before because of the approach he takes, the organization he's donating to isn't even an actual charity - those are fairly clear criticisms.
I also liked this piece on the same subject (though non-gawker/off-topic): http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/bitwise/2015/12/mark_zuckerberg_s_hacker_philanthropy_can_we_trust_it.html
― Karl Rove Knausgård (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 2 December 2015 18:27 (ten years ago)
they are clear in that they are easy to communicate but they are also dumb. the critique that previous philanthropic acts have failed is beyond asinine (oh let's not be happy he's donating so much money because sometimes when he's donated money in the past it hasn't worked out perfectly) and he has every right to disseminate the money in house. you don't have to send a check to an already existing NGO (many of which are incredibly incompetent and wasteful) to be charitable.
― Mordy, Wednesday, 2 December 2015 18:30 (ten years ago)
it rubs me the wrong way bc it's just gawker pissing on something that seems kinda wonderful bc they're hateful shits

― Mordy, Wednesday, 2 December 2015 18:36 (ten years ago)
the press needs to have a default skepticism when powerful people announce how they are moving money around. frankly it has the opposite -- zuckerberg's statement was basically repeated verbatim and greeted with cheers. share if you agree!! it took those backbiting little shits at buzzfeed to tease out that the receiving entity isn't even a charity:

“The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative will pursue its mission by funding non-profit organizations, making private investments and participating in policy debates, in each case with the goal of generating positive impact in areas of great need,” it said. “Any profits from investments in companies will be used to fund additional work to advance the mission.”
