"has a nation ever had to use their third keeper at a tournament? it's so stupid. i want to take Defoe AND Vassell dammit."

u can always drop one of those midfielders :-) Which of those two do you think WILL go steve? defoe played well under the careful watch of mr. gripp at the weekend. my money is on he.

JESUS SAVES!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

My squad would be:

Robinson
James
Martyn (playing better than Walker despite his age)

G Neville
A Cole
Bridge
Terry
Campbell
Southgate
Mills

Lampard
Gerrard
Beckham
Scholes
Barry (criminally overlooked so far and can play left midfield or leftback if called upon)
Parker (more versatile than Hargreaves and generally better IMO)
Cole
Butt

Rooney
Owen
Defoe
Heskey

I might put Phil Neville in to play in central midfield but not at fullback, but I reckon there's enough cover there.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:21 (twenty years ago) link

heskey coming into form. I would love to see him have a good tournament.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:23 (twenty years ago) link

what is sven's favourite 11?

my guess:

james

g.neville
terry
campbell
a.cole

becks
lampard
scholes
gerrard (strong hints that he will be used narrow on the left, did a great job there home to turkey, but may be a mistake)

rooney
owen

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:33 (twenty years ago) link

jesus saves, but he has a weakness when it comes to crosses, obv...

probably about right there weasel, although i'd prolly go for bridge over cole (cole to solve the left-wing problem?)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:39 (twenty years ago) link

robinson
james
walker

neville
southgate
cole
campbell
neville
bridge
terry
carragher

rooney
gerrard
scholes
beckham
lampard
parker
hargreaves
butt

beattie
owen
defoe
vassell

ken's crazy 11

Robinson

neville campbell cole

gerrard
beckham rooney
Lampard
Scholes

Beattie Owen

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

So, England to lose all three group matches then, Ken?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:46 (twenty years ago) link

is rooney at left wing-back?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:47 (twenty years ago) link

Robinson

Neville Campbell Terry Bridge

Gerrard and Lampard in central midfield, Beckham right, Barry left in a straight 4-4-2, or Beckham-Gerrard-Lampard-Scholes in the diamond, with Gerrard on the left.

Rooney and Owen upfront

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:48 (twenty years ago) link

of course if i were the manager i actually really would have played neville, neville, bridge, bridges, cole, cole, cole, owen, owen hargraves, james, james beattie

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:48 (twenty years ago) link

So, England to lose all three group matches then, Ken?

haha you were expecting different?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago) link

my personal squad (rather than the one i think sven will pick)

james, robinson, martyn

g.neville, p. neville, terry, campbell, southgate, bridge, cole

beckham, dyer, scholes, lampard, gerrard, hargreaves, barry, butt

heskey, rooney, owen, defoe

final place = fite between vassel and parker

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 12:57 (twenty years ago) link

The one I think Sven will pick:

James, Robinson, Walker, G Neville, Terry, Campbell, Cole, Bridge, Mills, Southgate, Upson, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Hargreaves, Dyer, Scholes, Butt, Owen, Heskey, Rooney, Vassell

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:00 (twenty years ago) link

yer one man short matt. 23 allowed.

i forgot about upson. he has been in a few squads, and with woodie and ferdy absent, tou never know...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:02 (twenty years ago) link

If there's 23 allowed then I reckon Phil Neville or Defoe will get the nod.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:15 (twenty years ago) link

These 2 should be in the Squad:

Zak Knight [Southgate is not going to recover intime]
Gareth Barry [can play at Left Back, Left Midfield or even Central Defence]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:30 (twenty years ago) link

i'm assuming Zak Knight is some sort of portsmouth player?

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:31 (twenty years ago) link

anyway, what about STEAD, if he truly is Roy of the Rovers for the 00s, then surely going to euro 2004 is his birthright...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:32 (twenty years ago) link

knight = fulham, i think. too early for stead.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago) link

typo: Zat Knight, Fulham's central defender

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago) link

Matt Taylor at Pompey to fill the left midfield slot at 2006 World Cup

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:35 (twenty years ago) link

i feel sorry for Vassell esp. considering the part he played in helping England qualify.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago) link

Jesus is a sound choice for keeper tho. He's very good at turning the tables.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago) link

I would also like to see an experiment of 32 players selected by Sven play in a competitive match open to the public, at a modern stadium somewhere like Derby or Hull

11 [+ 5 Subs] his so called strongest team options
play against
11 [+ 5 subs] next top 16 selected

You would learn a lot more about players stengths/weaknesses from such a game than a so called friendly.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago) link

remember the last 'England B' friendly?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

Chris Sutton scored iirc

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago) link

Chris Sutton didn't turn up, for a England B Squad once, he snubbed it. Remember England B Squads in the 90s with John Scales and Matt Le Tosser

What year did England scrap B squads?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago) link

didn't le tiss once score a hat-trick for england b? i remember the sutton incident mantioned by martian, too. i think sven announces his squad on the 17th, it shall be interesting to see how it pans out.

Midfielders haven't been named yet, and Barry could be in there. I doubt it though, even if I think he should be.

Phil Neville is in because he can play in three different positions on the pitch, even if he's only really any good in central midfield. I'm surprised to see Southgate in there, but Matthew Upson, how your stock has plummeted.

Yay Scotty Parker! Go there! Now someone break Owen Hargreaves' leg so Parker can go to Portugal.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago) link

I forgot to delete that first para.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago) link

Danny Mills must be proper fucked off.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:13 (twenty years ago) link

Standby:

Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Richard Wright (Everton), Matthew Upson (Birmingham), Gareth Southgate (Middlesbrough), Scott Parker (Chelsea), Alan Smith (Leeds).

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:13 (twenty years ago) link

Does "fucked off" mean "disappeared" in that sentence?

(what a dull, dull line-up. England are never going to win anything.)

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:14 (twenty years ago) link

Heskey seems to be on his way to Birmingham.

: (

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:16 (twenty years ago) link

to be fair to the bbc webmonkeys they updated/ changed things very fast, but they had the wrong details up for a few minutes.

happier times

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:18 (twenty years ago) link

Barry you big tart what do you mean dull?!?! ;)

shame Defoe couldn't make it but Vassell really earned his place i feel

considering Owen didn't score in the group matches at the World Cup I think he actually will score against France. the biggest best strikers usually net in their first tournament game tho there is always the odd exception and hopefully Owen's got that out of the way and will start brightly in Portugal.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:24 (twenty years ago) link

glad Carragher is in (i would play him!), would not have taken Mills

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago) link

How many goals has Vassell scored this season?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:25 (twenty years ago) link

I'm starting to get as defensive about the Nevilles as other people do about Heskey. NEVILLE-BASHING IS K-LAME THERE IS NO WAY JAMIE CARRAGHER IS BETTER THAN GARY NEVILLE.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:26 (twenty years ago) link

how many England goals has Vassell scored is arguably more pertinent

where was Steve Stone?? :( ;)

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:27 (twenty years ago) link

Mattchester United DC.

stevem (blueski), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago) link

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago) link

Darius Vassell is better than Alan Smith is he?

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago) link

yes Defoe was unlucky, as Vassell would've been

Dadaismus it's not about who's better, it's about who can best be used and how
