He died at 77, of a heart attack, on tour in Europe.

In addition to playing piano, he composed scores of songs, including "Ruler of My Heart," "A Certain Girl," "Fortune Teller" and "Lipstick Traces (on a Cigarette)." The New Orleans-born trumpeter Al Hirt had a hit with Mr. Toussaint's instrumental composition "Java."

In the 1970s, he embarked on a solo career, which reached a high point with the release of his "Southern Nights" album; the title song became a hit not only for him but also for Glen Campbell

From Wikipedia:

Taylor has, on a somewhat regular and obviously incorrect basis, been reported as having died in a spectacular or horrible fashion. An example took place in 2001, where Taylor allegedly died due to AIDS. Obviously not true, Taylor can be seen on the 2005 documentary "Ace Of Spades: Classic Albums", alongside Lemmy Kilmister and former members of Motörhead, frequently joking about his supposed demise.

I guess not incorrect this time,.

Just saw that on twitter. Not seeing any confirmation anywhere else yet. Had no idea when I saw PF Sloan interviewed at the Ponderosa Stomp a little while back, and later perform, that he was dying of cancer.

Jimmy Webb used to swear up and down that that "P.F. Sloan" just coincidently was the name of a real musician and the song wasn't about him. Apparently he no longer denies it was...

http://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/rip-mack-mccormick/

More famously, Mack spent many years on the trail of bluesman Robert Johnson, driving down the back roads of Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas, knocking on doors, and talking to hundreds of people, including a man who may have killed the bluesman. The search for Johnson took over Mack’s life, as he later wrote: “I’d become absorbed not as a matter of anthropology or aesthetics, but looking at him as a dark young fury that reveals something about the American experience.” Mack finally located the musician’s two half-sisters near Baltimore in 1972 and got the first photos of Johnson

Thus sadly ensuring I will never not confuse him with Layne Staley.

Three Word Username, Friday, 4 December 2015 10:26 (ten years ago)

Yeah, me too. Saw someone posting RIP Scott Weiland on Facebook and figured it was one of those timehop things before realising I was thinking of Layne Staley.

ailsa, Friday, 4 December 2015 10:48 (ten years ago)

Oh shit yes you're right. I hadn't considered that they were two different people either.

Think we have a clear candidate for the "I always get those two confused" thread.

Anyway RIP Scott Weiland. 48 is no age really.
