Twitter C/D

It's a mechanism that people can use any which way they please. That bugs twitter that they just can't say, here is what this button does to new users. It's evolved into what is essentially parallel to some sort of visual/audible feedback that you have in real life conversations. A nod, an uh huh, that's right, a good bye.

But if it's someone I know, and their only method of interaction with me is to star the occasional tweet, instead of talking to me

Its strange...but it depends. If you meet them IRL every now and then and feels good then I'd cast it as a bad-habit picked up while online. And there are many of those.

It would definitely be weird if someone I've never met faved (fav'd?) a bunch of stuff on the reg and never otherwise corresponded. Maybe that kind of thing happens more when you've got a shitload of followers (which I don't)

I'm going to star carrying around a bunch of star stickers and placing them on people's foreheads when they say something awesome.

I don't have a ton of followers either. Maybe it's just another of those weird internet things that just doesn't happen to men. I've no idea!

(I think probably not. I think it is one of those things about mismatches in terms of understanding the shallowness or depth of acquaintance. But I could be wrong.)

Funny, I've never really thought of Twitter as a forum for conversation. If one breaks out that's fine but it usually feels like a postscript to the original tweet. And I love getting fav'd by anyone - strangers, friends, quasi-friends. I don't generally expect replies to anything, so I guess I'm fine with people "watching me like television" as Branwell says - which also describes how I approach the people I follow. (I'll fave a lot though).

I will miss the Twitter stars. I've always felt a star was more difficult to get from your followers than, say, a heart on Instagram (definitely statistically true) so a starred tweet was more of an achievement. Now I imagine the Twitter hearts will become like devalued stars.

it's interesting to me how fickle people's relationship to twitter is: "oh, now it's a heart? i'm fucking out of here" or "they put top posts at the top of the feed now? unacceptable level of mediation--COUNT ME OUT." these reactions are hilarious and incomprehensible to me. i love twitter and am super addicted to it. there's nothing else like it and i don't think there's anything feature that would fundamentally change its function or my relationship to it

the "while you were away" thing is like 3 tweets that are very easy to ignore

the worst thing that happened to twitter was the professionalization/legitimization of it, things r always better before anyone takes them serious

theyve added a lot of cruft to the product but it still p much works the same as always

mostly the changes have been good imo! like remember when we all thought the RT button was dumb, or the conversation lines were dumb, actually those things ended up being good and not dumb

most of the changes have been subtle tho like lagoon says the way i use twitter now is m/l the way i used it 5 years ago

the quoting rt feature they put in not long ago is like the best thing ever but nobody thinkpieces improvements bc humans are terrible

some of them are good some not so good but even if you added only good functionality when taken together the overall effect degrades the simplicity and therefor usability of the thing, the impression w twitter is they have a lot of ppl adding things and no one pruning, which is prob an effect of an overly analytics based approach its easy to measure what a new feature does but its hard to pinpoint an over all suffering experience, tho of course as weve seen all these new features have failed to actually grow their base anyway

its kinda interesting watching software age and enter its baroque phase, facebook obvs is nearly incomprehensible theres so much shit in there, but you dont really need to comprehend it you just look at yr feed and its more popular than ever

instagram is the polar opposite where they have fanatically kept their design simple and locked down, tho theyve has creeping functionality too, instagram is the worst tho so i guess i have some love for complexity and def weirdness

i wasn't on twitter before it became legit but the fact that pros and legits coexist with trolls and teenagers &c is one of my fav things about it

true that is p good

id say as far as being interesting from a design/culture standpoint

snapchat > twitter > facebook > instagram > linkdin

as far as how much i use them tho

twitter > facebook > instagram > snapchat > linkdin

snapchat is almost just messaging tho but it does have some social features so its ok to include it

i was just about to create a linkedin profile when i got offered a job

i havent really used it but linked in is insanely awful

ty i endorse u for compliment culture

linkedin is awful but I like it for being able to keep tabs on whether people I once knew might be useful to me professionally. And nobody tries to talk to me on it.

yea i will definitely join next time i'm on job market and hit up old colleagues classmates & alumni networks... seems gd annoying tho

snapchat is the most legit. generally into streaming/vid content creation platforms. snapchat stories are my favorite

i used to be really into twitter but ended up locking myself out of my account somehow. i created another account but never told anyone and post semi-infrequently so i only have like 5 followers which i really like. it makes me really happy when totally random ppl rt or fav me because it feels so old-internet. instagram is really terrible now i think
