twitter copying the facebook/instagram model makes me wonder who will be the first to acquire it

im really not very good at social media
where is the pity fav? pretty sure that accounts for most of my fav'd tweets tbh
― vlade dvorak (rip van wanko), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 22:24 (eight years ago) link
the most common use of the fav is prob "i acknowledge yr comment"
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 22:25 (eight years ago) link
yeah faving as this polite thing you do when you get in a convo is a development I've never loved

tweted by noted "digital journalist" (and actual journalist) al3x h0ward aka d1g1phil3 as evidence of 'all that twitter has subsumed into the 'like',' practically spitting out the consonants onto his keybard

stet otm
and if Snapchat is any indication, we're moving away from likes and follows generally, so this new heart is going in the wrong direction.
Also much of the time the favorite button is about conversation-ending, saying "I hear you even if I'm not going to reply." That ain't the same as heart.

people are gonna huff and puff but obviously nothing changes. seems obvious twitter wants to be a little less inscrutable to the uninitiated, their user growth numbers have been awful
― k3vin k., Tuesday, 3 November 2015 23:10 (eight years ago) link
If they would just embed Instagram photos instead of posting them as a URL, they would be back in the center of things in no time.
― my harp and me (Eazy), Tuesday, 3 November 2015 23:13 (eight years ago) link
feel like twitters got it all wrong, imo they shd come to grips w the fact that they are a product for power users and shd build it to cater to those users, then concentrate on syndicating/monetizing all that free content thru diff channels
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 3 November 2015 23:16 (eight years ago) link
it sux that the end game of success for these companies is ruining their product and turning it into a way for grandparents to annoy their family members

how is a star hard to understand
― j., Wednesday, 4 November 2015 01:15 (eight years ago) link
@mulliganWith @Cluster we found hearts made a LOT more sense to users than stars. Stars were used sparingly. Hearts impulsively. Higher engagement.
@mulliganBasically users thought:Stars = favorites —> "I only can have a few favorites". Hearts = likes —> "I can like as many things as I want."
― 0 / 0 (lukas), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 02:26 (eight years ago) link
star = you can give out as many as you want (they come on sheets, in stickers)
BUT
w/ added space-age advantage that they can be TAKEN AWAY
hearts pfft you can't like the whole world gotta keep that thing close to you
― j., Wednesday, 4 November 2015 02:28 (eight years ago) link
yes many sins in software are committed under the banner of "increasing engagement"
it'll be generally accepted that product managers ruin everything good by the second half of 2016
― 0 / 0 (lukas), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 02:31 (eight years ago) link
Should've seen this coming with the unlimited hearts on Periscope.
― pplains, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 02:40 (eight years ago) link
feel like you could do better if your goal is just to increase engagement. make a fart button with a dinky lil animation and a sound and that's going to get a good amount of engagement.
― Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 14:19 (eight years ago) link
somebody at fusion wrote a chrome extension that turns the heart into an animated poop emoji

That reminds me, what do you guys think of Periscope? Feels like this era of instant streaming video has yet to really hit a critical point, but I've watched a few interesting streams.
I knew when I got the notification that my friend was trapped on the Tower of Terror ride at Disney World that it'd be a boring, if illuminating, moment
― μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 14:47 (eight years ago) link

ive never seen anything good on there but a lot of ppl are convinced its the future, im skeptical that really that many ppl want to watch no production values live video from someones phone, idk live streaming startups have been coming and going for like ten years now, justin.tv where i used to watch illicit nba streams did turn into twitch and sell to amazon for a billion, the best streaming company is obv younow not just cause it sounds like the name of a fake app from a tv show but because u can watch teens sleep lol http://www.buzzfeed.com/katienotopoulos/im-addicted-to-watching-teens-sleep#.rh7ElWDxx
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 4 November 2015 15:01 (eight years ago) link
music industry is whistling in the dark about how periscope affect live shows; right now it's impossible to patrol cell phone shooting and periscope gives the audience the right to livestream... which no artist would ever voluntarily give up of course. so by and large venues and promoters are weirdly pretending like it doesn't exist while still obsessively banning camcorders with less resolution or online connectivity. it's gonna come to a head soon i think.

― dead (Lamp), Wednesday, 4 November 2015 15:14 (eight years ago) link
nb i am not cosigning/cassandra-ing periscope specifically, just the core tech.

got super into korean streams where ppl order lots of take out and thean eat it on stream

citizen panopticon a good thing as Ferguson and BLM streamers have made evident in the past year, whether it's #disruptive to #media is another thing I guess
