The excellent historian David Cesarani:

Her Shakespeare course at QMW opened my mind to so many possibilities and lines of analysis and inquiry. she was a fantastic lecturer, and a very charismatic force of nature, and I always enjoyed seeing her on TV or hearing her on radio after I graduated.

^ I was likely at the very same lectures - she was terrific.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 26 October 2015 09:29 (ten years ago)

shit, RIP Jardine - real scholarly heft barely ever comes with her kind of lucidity, imagination, breadth, style… such good books & a real loss.

I was there 1999-2002. What about you? It's unlikely we ever spoke - I wasn't very sociable back then, unfortunately - but you never know.

Eyeball Kicks, Monday, 26 October 2015 19:27 (ten years ago)

i was 1993-6. too too old.

I'm hearing from Facebook friends that Penelope Houston, the former editor of Sight and Sound, has died. Not a good day for film critics - RIP Philip French, also. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-34648695

Tony Van Frater, 51, of left wing Oi! band Red Alert and bassist for the Cockney Rejects since 1999.

Just noise and screaming and no musical value at all. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 30 October 2015 12:18 (ten years ago)

Haven't been checking this thread, so I didn't know about Penelope Houston and Philip French--amazing it'd be on consecutive days.

Barring the impossible dream of Ron Paul getting the nod, Fred Thompson is this country's last hope. I may even campaign for him.

nomar, Monday, 2 November 2015 02:25 (ten years ago)

I would like to see Thompson in an old grumpy fart-a-thon versus Joe Don Baker. They could compete to see who can say "well, whoop dee shit!" in the most curmudgeonly way possible. Thompson would have both hands tied in front of him, just so that he couldn't pass capital gains tax cuts and anti-abortion legislation behind him during the competition.

I always associate freddy t with early '90s blockbusters. he was always a really good screen presence, always made the most of his few minutes onscreen.

http://www.nola.com/music/index.ssf/2015/11/allen_toussaint_dies.html

He died at 77, of a heart attack, on tour in Europe.

In addition to playing piano, he composed scores of songs, including "Ruler of My Heart," "A Certain Girl," "Fortune Teller" and "Lipstick Traces (on a Cigarette)." The New Orleans-born trumpeter Al Hirt had a hit with Mr. Toussaint's instrumental composition "Java."

In the 1970s, he embarked on a solo career, which reached a high point with the release of his "Southern Nights" album; the title song became a hit not only for him but also for Glen Campbell
