my thing went well btw. was going to write some words about it, but still too knackered. anyhow, i ran every step with my sister - our time was 21 hrs 43 mins, so we beat 24 hrs, finished in the top third and - most importantly - enjoyed every minute of it
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 14:29 (ten years ago)
Amazing.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 14:39 (ten years ago)
well i don't know about that - we were 7.5 hours behind the winner after all
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 14:40 (ten years ago)
y'all ran 100 miles in less than a day, that is objectively amazing
Don't think I'll do another long run till Ottawa mk II in May
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:09 (ten years ago)
cant imagine running for 20 hours i ran for an hour and a half and bonked yesterday
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:33 (ten years ago)
(granted the day after yoga + lifting and the water fountain i was planning on stopping by had been turned off for the season)
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:34 (ten years ago)
btw r u all still not lifting doing some squats/deadlifts will make u a more powerful stable runner
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:38 (ten years ago)
I probably could given proper training? Hardest things would be restraint/pacing and nutrition, I'm sure.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:38 (ten years ago)
I see ultras as something I pick up in my 40s and 50s when there is no chance at getting faster at the marathon distance.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:39 (ten years ago)
not that ive been personally orienting my workout towards running but if u wanted to seems like visiting the gym a couple times a week and doing speed work on the treadmill and lifting/core exercises a couple times a week cld work
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:41 (ten years ago)
do u guys take water w u when u run i never did but now i moved to a drier climate and its fucking w me but i h8 carrying things shd i get a camelback or what uhg whats the best device dont say that water bottle that straps to yr hand
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)
Typically I never have, at least in the summer because water fountains are plentiful on the Chicago lakefront. Pretty much required in winter since almost all the fountains are turned off.
However the marathon training pacing I did, they encouraged us to carry handhelds so we didn't have to stop very often and slow the group down. So I decided to carry one for this past marathon as well. I still kind of hate it. Handheld is certainly better than one of those belt things though.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:48 (ten years ago)
a lot of people say that but i'm pretty sure i have a marathon p.b. still in me if only i could get round to doing some speedwork. think my enhanced endurance base through to doing ultras would definitely give me an extra edge now. i suppose the real reason that's still a possibility for me though, is because i never really did myself justice when i was younger and faster
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:51 (ten years ago)
lag∞n i run with a camelbak, but that's because ultrarunners are ultragoofy. it works for me though
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:52 (ten years ago)
yeah think i might just swallow my pride and go for that, sweaty back seems better than weird unbalanced water bottles stuck to yr body
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)
i do wear a weirdo race vest thing in races that has bottles built into the shoulder straps. now that thing is ubergoofy
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)
where are you now anyway? where do you run?
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:55 (ten years ago)
Yeah, my 20's were a waste physically. I didn't run at all and was way out of shape. Didn't really start until I was 30. Getting a late start has it's perks though, you can keep getting faster on up into your 40's without worrying about eclipsing a PR you set when you were 22.
Nick, what's your marathon PR? 3:10 or something, right?
― Jeff, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:56 (ten years ago)
i'm not even sure what it is now tbh! 3:14 i think
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 15:58 (ten years ago)
that was from when i was 30 and going for a sub-3 hr time. guess what happened to me @ mile 18?

boulder, co its crazy so many of the worlds elite distance runners live here and u seen them around just doing their thing, they do not look like normal humans
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 16:00 (ten years ago)
wow i could imagine! must be great for running
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 16:01 (ten years ago)
yeah its p cool there are a lot of footpaths just around town where u dont have to deal w cars, tho a lot of the trails in the mountains tend to be extremely steep, i suspect it became a runners mecca more cause of the altitude and culture than the quality of the running per say, im sure there are many great runs if i wanted to drive for a few mins but im more of a throw on the shoes and run out the door type
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 16:05 (ten years ago)
on the other hand the air is extremely dry :|
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 16:11 (ten years ago)
ok i bought a cheap "hydration backpack" and will prob end up buying an expensive one later lol
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 16:35 (ten years ago)
re: late running, I'm 29 and I ran my first two marathons this year. I'd like to get under 4rs next year but that will involve kicking my all-around fitness level up several notches. which is good because I'll need to find ways to stay active through the winter and fight them blues.
I never carry water around but there are fountains along the canal. I HATE carrying more than my phone and keys around
also I highly recommend the mpow swift bluetooth headphones for anyone who runs with music - 30 bucks, decent sound quality, wireless, about 5 hrs battery life, and they never get dislodged from my head.
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)
i h8 even carrying my phone and my keys :(
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 17:08 (ten years ago)
sick
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 17:12 (ten years ago)
i barely run anymore, maybe once every 2 weeks, and surprisingly don't really miss it. like it makes when i do go out that much better i think
otoh, one of my friends (who never liked running until i started to fyi) finished 24th overall in an iron man last wkend O_O
― johnny crunch, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 17:23 (ten years ago)
a friend of mine's mom does a full ironman every year, she's gotta be pushing 65 or so? I'll be lucky if I can even stay lucid through the length of the movie "iron man" by then
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 17:26 (ten years ago)
I can only jog if I have water with me to drink. My mouth and throat always get dried out. It's one of the things that prevented me from running when I was a kid. I use bottled water now, but it makes me feel pretty off-balance. Would prefer to go hands-free.
When I started jogging this summer, my wife said she'd buy me some heart-rate monitor wrist thingy and I was like "please don't". I carry that 16 oz. water bottle and my work ID to get back in the building (I run on my lunch break) and that's it.
― how's life, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 17:30 (ten years ago)
I only run with two keys to get into the house and my transit card. But when I have to carry more, I got one of these: https://flipbelt.com/ Most comfortable belt/pouch I've used.
― Jeff, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 17:31 (ten years ago)
First run back. Probably my quickest recovery from a marathon ever.
― Jeff, Saturday, 24 October 2015 12:17 (ten years ago)
Yeah my recovery has been a lot better this time - I can probably start running again in the next couple days. Left foot still a bit tight.

I warm up for running by running. I'll do some half-hearted warm ups before a race, butt kicks, high knees, leg swings, strides. But mainly because I'm bored and need to pass the time.
― Jeff, Monday, 26 October 2015 13:46 (ten years ago)
Good stuff. I had just been doing the lunge matrix segment as a warm-up with some of that other stuff as part of my cool-down routine, but the lunge matrix alone was definitely lacking something. At some point I tried that Iron Cross though and ended up throwing my lower back out. I might have done it wrong, but think that's what did it. I was hobbling around for a week anyway.

have just sent off my entry for next year's grand union canal race. goes from birmingham to london, 145 miles but it's all dead flat. 50% chance of getting in, hope the running gods are smiling on me
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Monday, 2 November 2015 16:19 (ten years ago)
Instant 145 mile PR.
― Jeff, Monday, 2 November 2015 17:00 (ten years ago)
Not if I fall in the canal tbh
Did my first 5k in ages on saturday, took it very gently as i'm easing myself back in to doing faster stuff over the winter. 20:38 which is no great shakes, but argh my calves feel like concrete now
― Haino Corrida (NickB), Monday, 2 November 2015 18:41 (ten years ago)
a friend of mine here (and old hiking buddy) has decided to get into ultras and i think maybe i want to try one?? i don't have any interest in running a marathon on pavement, but i have always enjoyed hiking really fast
is that crazy? he hasn't done any marathons before (nor have i) but is v much into the Fast and Light backpacking ethos, with a plan to do go for the FKT on the Long Trail some time this summer. i'm way more into the idea of suffering in the mountains for an entire day than i am 5hrs in the city, in a crowd, but is it madness to decide to do something longer than 50k for a first-time deal? or do i just have to train with that in mind?
my goal is to do the pemi loop maybe this summer: http://www.backpacker.com/trips/wyoming/grand-teton-national-park/america-s-hardest-dayhikes/
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Monday, 4 January 2016 23:16 (ten years ago)
i did this without training when i was a yoot (juuuust barely sub-24hrs) but, like, i was 20yo
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Monday, 4 January 2016 23:22 (ten years ago)
I don't think it's too crazy, go for it. Outside of the elites, many ultra runners are just power hiking anyway. You're probably better equipped for it than many road runners that decide to try ultras.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 01:24 (ten years ago)
Note that I have no experience with ultras, Nick B will certainly be a wealth of information here.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 5 January 2016 01:29 (ten years ago)
I would love to do a long-ass hike like that, wonder if there are any popular Cdn equivalents...
Went on my first proper winter run today - windchill around -20 celsius (that's around -4 fahrenheit). Gloves, a hat, a hoodie, and overpriced thermal undies. Not too bad!
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 01:41 (ten years ago)
thanks guys --- i think if i look at it as power hiking and not running, it seems way more feasible. it's more about finishing than it is about going fast
― jason waterfalls (gbx), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 16:01 (ten years ago)
not really much longer than a marathon, which tons of people do without even training for six months first... but 18,000 foot of elevation changes suggests a few months of prep are in order? which you have plenty of time for!
― erry red flag (f. hazel), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 18:35 (ten years ago)
i will try and write more later, but gbx you should totally do that
