The best part by far was Kyle Mooney's brief turn as the Dutch backpack rapper in the city council sketch. Another one of his closely observed character bits that is sure to be appreciated by ~.001% of the audience.

SNL's long past the point of having any kind of political perspective or agenda, at this point when they have politicians on it's just two gross camps of attention whores exploiting each other

It was indeed, but when you don't have out-of-this-world talent, you have to get literal.

"out-of-this-world talent"
is that a UFO allusion and is it in reference to Aykroyd, Carter, or both?
― it's not a tuomas (benbbag), Monday, 19 October 2015 05:44 (eight years ago) link

Even accounting for the SNL myopia everyone suffers from, in what universe is Dan Aykroyd more of an out-of-this-world talent than Kate McKinnon?

I know the OG cast is sacrosanct (except not really if you've rewatched that stuff within the last 30 years) but, yeah, there have been a number of subsequent performers who were equally good if not better. Not saying Aykroyd is bad but McKinnon is at least his equal.
― Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:11 (eight years ago) link
If we're talking about work done outside of SNL, there are plenty of talented people from old casts and newer casts alike who've done brilliant work (and also plenty who've been pitiful). If we're talking about work within the confines of SNL, though, there's Phil Hartman and then there's everyone else.

McKinnon is skilled, but too many of her characters have the same manic traits. Maybe I am not watching close enough, but would like to see more range from her
― curmudgeon, Monday, 19 October 2015 14:34 (eight years ago) link
Kate McKinnon is great but, as I see her do more stuff, I see her getting Wiiged by the writing staff. It seems like they have less of an idea of what Aidy Bryant and Vanessa Bayer's true schticks are and, as a result, they end up with a wider range of characters to portray (in fairness, Bryant does get pigeonholed a lot too but I feel like I've seen her do more surprising things than I've seen from McKinnon).

Re: range, I've said for years that Lorne needs to branch out and hire more performers with a theatrical background beyond the improv stage. But I guess that doesn't necessarily suit the current tone of the show, for better or worse.

http://deadline.com/2015/10/donald-trump-saturday-night-live-protest-moveon-1201586581/
A coalition of Latino groups and liberal online activist platform MoveOn.org are calling for NBC to disinvite GOP Presidential candidate Donald Trump from hosting Saturday Night Live on November 7, which happens to be exactly one year from Election Day 2016. MoveOn.org’s petition has climbed from 15,000 signatures Friday evening to 117,000 and counting as of Sunday evening.
...
Trump hosted SNL back in 2004, but his upcoming gig would mark the first time a Presidential candidate will host the show. As Hillary Clinton did on October 3, other political figures such as Steve Forbes, Rudy Guiliani and John McCain and have appeared in skits but not hosted the show. Former Vice President Al Gore appeared as a host in 2002.
― curmudgeon, Monday, 19 October 2015 14:42 (eight years ago) link
Uh, McCain totally hosted. And let's not forget Giuliani.
Trump hosting is totally gross, as if it even needs to be said.

― Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:46 (eight years ago) link
I think they mean this is the first time someone has hosted the show while simultaneously running for President.
