Yeah that rapper bit was awesome. His characters don't generally seem to have the simple/loud quality that makes a "classic" SNL character, but that's fine with me.

I will say this about Mooney--whenever he's in live sketches, and not playing some weird character, he delivers all his lines with these unnatural stock inflections. He makes everyone sound like sort of a dialed-back version of his hack comedian character Bruce Chandling. It's like the one thing he can't play is a normal person speaking normally.

JRN, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:02 (ten years ago)

I love him BTW

JRN, Monday, 12 October 2015 22:03 (ten years ago)

Probably my favorite Kyle Mooney thing, this pre-SNL "Inside Socal" bit:

I love that one.

My favorite little phrase in there is "newer-style movies"

JRN, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 00:37 (ten years ago)

The best part by far was Kyle Mooney's brief turn as the Dutch backpack rapper in the city council sketch. Another one of his closely observed character bits that is sure to be appreciated by ~.001% of the audience.

I had to pause the tv I was laughing so hard. "Real Hip Hope!"

dan selzer, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 01:33 (ten years ago)

That was the best bit of the episode by leaps and bounds. Killed me.

i'm not a huge mooney fan, but i suspect that this is his way of amusing himself during sketches where he doesn't have much to do/are boring

election years bring out the worst in SNL

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 22:47 (ten years ago)

It will either be brilliant or a trainwreck.

Very watchable in either case, I reckon.

austinato (Austin), Tuesday, 13 October 2015 23:24 (ten years ago)

Maybe it will be, but I don't be watching. Fuck Trump and anything that elevates (or sustains) his profile.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 23:33 (ten years ago)

SNL's long past the point of having any kind of political perspective or agenda, at this point when they have politicians on it's just two gross camps of attention whores exploiting each other

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 13 October 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)

so they embrace the inevitable w/ LD as Bernie, and nobody watched huh

Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 18 October 2015 17:30 (ten years ago)

David was fine, McKinnon had a couple good lines, skit too long and my Facebook feed blowing up as usual.

why do they have a 30yo cast member playin HilRod? they could at least eyebag 'er up.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 October 2015 00:49 (ten years ago)

Yeah, for real. It's like she and fake Coop weren't even trying. Aykroyd's mustachioed Carter was a better impression.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 19 October 2015 02:02 (ten years ago)

I liked kate mckinnon's hilary!

SNL history buff Morbs remembers when cast members weren't decades younger than the politicians they played oh wait right that never happened

Coop was horrible, and Chaffee yiiikes

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 19 October 2015 02:34 (ten years ago)

Leslie Jones would have been a more age-appropriate Hillary.

schwantz, Monday, 19 October 2015 03:01 (ten years ago)

Aykroyd's mustachioed Carter was a better impression.

It was indeed, but when you don't have out-of-this-world talent, you have to get literal.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 October 2015 05:28 (ten years ago)

"out-of-this-world talent"

is that a UFO allusion and is it in reference to Aykroyd, Carter, or both?

it's not a tuomas (benbbag), Monday, 19 October 2015 05:44 (ten years ago)

also when you have an old coot playing Sanders, you should go across the board.

skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Monday, 19 October 2015 06:36 (ten years ago)

Even accounting for the SNL myopia everyone suffers from, in what universe is Dan Aykroyd more of an out-of-this-world talent than Kate McKinnon?

I know the OG cast is sacrosanct (except not really if you've rewatched that stuff within the last 30 years) but, yeah, there have been a number of subsequent performers who were equally good if not better. Not saying Aykroyd is bad but McKinnon is at least his equal.

Don't Call Me A Lunkhead, You Dingbat! (Old Lunch), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:11 (ten years ago)

If we're talking about work done outside of SNL, there are plenty of talented people from old casts and newer casts alike who've done brilliant work (and also plenty who've been pitiful). If we're talking about work within the confines of SNL, though, there's Phil Hartman and then there's everyone else.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 19 October 2015 14:28 (ten years ago)

don't know Kate McKinnon's work, nor shall i
