Carl would probably have me committed if I signed up to try a 50 at this point...

Jeff, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:14 (ten years ago)

they'll have to catch you first

Ray Chard (NickB), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:16 (ten years ago)

that looks like a gorgeous trail... I'd do it.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:45 (ten years ago)

50 miles last week, first time in over 2 years I've done that. Too long. Still undecided on the marathon.

Jeff, Monday, 28 September 2015 14:13 (ten years ago)

Welp, I signed up. Marathon number 5 here I come.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 00:16 (ten years ago)

huzzah! my second is in three weekends (gulp)

good luck folks!

I ran my first marathon at Loch Ness this weekend in 4 hrs 2 min. Was mildly disappointed to not go under 4 hrs, but mainly pleased to have finished. The furthest I'd ever run in one go was 18 miles. I ran the first half a bit quick, and the last 11 miles were a struggle. Also it was a lot hillier than I expected. Bring on the next one!

listener to of Radiohead (cajunsunday), Tuesday, 29 September 2015 19:44 (ten years ago)

Congrats, that's a darn good time for a first one. It took me four to break four hours.

It will be interesting going into this one. My last marathon, I knew I was going to run and signed up 9 months in advance. So I had a LONG time to dwell on it, worry about it, etc etc. This time, I have umm.. 18 days.

Since I had not intention of running a marathon this season, I didn't train for a specific time. So I'm going to play it very conservatively and plan for a negative split (if possible), which is really what I should have been doing for previous ones anyway. Rough plan for now is to run 8:30's for the first 18 miles and then see if I can do a progression in the last 8.2. If I can start ticking off 7:30 miles in the last 6, I should be able to get close to a PR. Easier said than done.

To contrast, the first 18 miles of my previous marathon I ran in 7:46 pace. The last 8.2, 9:05. No bueno.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 20:20 (ten years ago)

I don't know who here is on Strava, but if you are, check out Veloviewer. Ups the data analysis about 10 notches. http://veloviewer.com/ I could spend hours slicing and dicing all my runs.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 20:22 (ten years ago)

One chart from Veloviewer. It my mileage progression for each year I've been running. 2013 was an awesome year. This year, not so much. At least by that metric. At least I'm past my 2012 mileage pace now.

Jeff, Tuesday, 29 September 2015 20:24 (ten years ago)

not nyc, is it?

I'm doing the Toronto Waterfront.

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 29 September 2015 20:29 (ten years ago)

Boston finalized admission standards today for the 2016 race, you had to beat your qualifying standard by at least 2:28! I would have had to run a 3:07:32 or faster. I'm afraid they'll be lowering that time in the future because of the huge demand.

Jeff, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 17:14 (ten years ago)

run as a rogue B-)

lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 17:51 (ten years ago)

Well done cajunsunday, great job!

Ray Chard (NickB), Wednesday, 30 September 2015 19:30 (ten years ago)

what should I listen to on my Sunday marathon?

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 18:34 (ten years ago)

can't say i've listen to music during marathons, but probably something that keeps you nicee and calm during the first 18 miles or so. after that, i would crank the fucker right up and fly! good luck with it simon btw. your second one right?

doing another 100 miler this weekend. doing it with my sister this time round, planning on sticking with her and trying to keep her going without her yelling at me too much. guess it'll take about 24-26 hours. weather's looking pretty nice, should be a good one. actually making a playlist here too, gonna run with a little bluetooth speaker to keep us in good spirits during the dark hours, can't see my taste in music pissing her off too much :/

Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:31 (ten years ago)

The last time I ever ran with music was the 2010 Chicago marathon. Got so tired of listening to music In my ears as I was suffering for 5 hours and 40 minutes. It's like that time you got hungover after drinking a certain thing and never drink that thing again.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:37 (ten years ago)

Trail marathon this weekend. Surprisingly chill about it. Maybe because it is going to be really chilly. 30s at the start, not my favorite but preferable over extreme heat.

Jeff, Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)

woah, go ilx!

Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:53 (ten years ago)

are you going there with a time in mind jeff or are you just going to see what happens?

Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 14 October 2015 21:54 (ten years ago)

The only thing set in stone is that I'm going to start out with 8:30's and run them for x miles and then do a progression for a negative split. Been playing around with scenarios. Aggressive is probably a pipedream. Anything below a 3:36 will be a PR, so that's what I'd like to do. It all depends on how I'm feeling in miles 10 to 18. Marathons are so tricky with pacing.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 October 2015 01:11 (ten years ago)

yes, NickB, marathon the second. my goal for the first one was to maybe do 4:30 and not die. I did 4:33 (fail!) and did not die (pass!). I would like to beat that time but not overly concerned about it. I think the nausea lase time was actually from over-hydration so I'll try not to do that this time. and hopefully my more extensive cross-training this time out will help w/ endurance a bit.

and I can't run WITHOUT music tbh, without it I get bored or just annoyed with the fact that I'm running and no one is chasing me

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 October 2015 04:20 (ten years ago)

shd tie yrself to a wolverine for this one

lag∞n, Thursday, 15 October 2015 05:03 (ten years ago)

I have honestly had worse running strategies

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Thursday, 15 October 2015 06:23 (ten years ago)

I totally don't begrudge people that run with music, seems like it should be fun and motivating, but I just can't take it. Whatever works.

In regards to pacing, looking at my aggressive strategy, it seems relatively low risk to do 8's and 8:15's to mile, that should be well within my ability. However it's not just about being within my ability, it's about glycogen management and not accelerating that burn. I have to pay close attention to my effort level during that 18 miles and if I feel like I'm working too hard for that pace, that should be the first warning sign that the last 8 to 6 miles won't go very well.

Unfortunately, one's brain doesn't work as well as it should in the latter stages of marathon and it's hard to make that call or even make an accurate estimate of your effort. Everything can seem like it is going great and then I hit mile 23 and then start run/walking 12 minute miles.

I should probably run 8:30's for a minimum of 13 miles. That's only a 45 second difference from the aggressive strategy, but I think it could make a difference in the latter stages of the race.

Maybe this:

https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/691/22005857429_c966f22e79_z.jpg

Those last miles still probably won't be that fast, but I don't think I would bonk and have to slow down dramatically.

My uncertainly lies in my training, I haven't had a lot of predictor workouts. The only race I've done was the 5K last month in 19:47, but that is not the most reliable indicator. Previously training for a marathon, I did a lot of long runs with fast finishes (18 miles with the last 4 to 6 being at half marathon pace), which were great for getting an idea of your ability. Not so much this time, just even paced.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:06 (ten years ago)

Who am I kidding, I should just go conservative and be happy if I can eek out a PR.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:14 (ten years ago)

Or if I don't, just call it a trail marathon PR. Can't lose!

Jeff, Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:24 (ten years ago)

Another factor/difference this time: I'm doing a real carbo load. Three days with 70% of my calories coming from carbs, meticulously tracked. I've upped my carbs for previous races, but never tracked it closely. I'm either going to be super fueled or my stomach will be a hot mess on race day.

Jeff, Thursday, 15 October 2015 14:35 (ten years ago)

I find that every fall or autumn I develop some kind of issue that prevents me from running, sometimes for several weeks at a time — typically it's been an IT band issue, but these past two years it's been posterior tibial dysfunction (a dull throbbing and tingling in my right foot and ankle). I never quite understand why it happens at the same time of year, and I end up having to recover during the spring. I actually prefer running when it's cooler — it's particularly helpful psychologically during winter — so it seems rather cruel that I should be out for that duration. Do other people have similar season injury patterns?

eatandoph (Neue Jesse Schule), Thursday, 15 October 2015 20:19 (ten years ago)

Yep, marathons still difficult. And humbling. Not my day, finished in 3:55. But it was such a small race I won my age group.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 October 2015 22:28 (ten years ago)

More hills than I would have like. Hills suck if you almost never run them.

Jeff, Saturday, 17 October 2015 22:29 (ten years ago)

Realized today that I think the winding trail bothered me too. My hips were on fire after 18. I'm used to just running in a straight line for hours, not constant turns. Worked muscles bet never get worked.

Jeff, Sunday, 18 October 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)

trail running is just slower too cause of the soft surface

lag∞n, Sunday, 18 October 2015 23:18 (ten years ago)

True. Although it was packed pretty good, there were some softer areas that I had some issues with.

Still in search of the elusive negative split marathon.

Chicago 2010 - 2:31/3:09 lol
Wisconsin 2011 - 2:12/2:19
Chicago 2012 - 1:58/DNF lol
Grand Rapids 2013 - 1:41/1:54
Des Plaines 2015 - 1:51/2:04

Last two, 13 minutes positive. I'm going to do it one day, if I have to walk the first half before running the second half.

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 14:01 (ten years ago)

I was four mins slower on this one but thanks to loads of cross-training I'm in much less pain. the Toronto course is grim and boring though, I think I'll opt for Montreal next fall.

job #1 for the next one is to weigh less (he said again)

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 October 2015 14:05 (ten years ago)

Maybe I should run Montreal. I love poutine. Good motivation.

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 14:18 (ten years ago)

Anyone have any experience running doubles? I need to up my mileage the next time I train for a full, but adding more days is hard to do with my schedule. Thought about doing doubles on easy days, like 5 or so miles in the morning, and then 5 to 8 in the evenings. Just to get more time on my feet.

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 14:27 (ten years ago)

huh

jason waterfalls (gbx), Tuesday, 20 October 2015 14:56 (ten years ago)

I'll go ahead and say results are not typical.

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 16:01 (ten years ago)

yeah I'd like to know the guy's baseline fitness level

is it weird that my phone tracker logged 43.3km for my marathon instead of 42.2?

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 October 2015 16:40 (ten years ago)

GPS typically measures longer than the actual course, unless you ran the exact tangents. Also effected by buildings/weather/etc.

My GPS measured my race at 26.29 miles on Saturday. Close as I've ever got to the actual distance.

Jeff, Tuesday, 20 October 2015 16:46 (ten years ago)

Yeah you always end up running a surprising amount more than the official distance because of suboptimal corner taking etc - some marathons have a (often blue) line down the middle of the road which, if you stick with it, will be exactly 26.2 miles.

pep ponk aliyev (seandalai), Tuesday, 20 October 2015 21:44 (ten years ago)

yeah that makes sense of course, I was just surprised that it was a full km more! screwed up mah (dismal) official statz

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 20 October 2015 21:56 (ten years ago)

I need to stop looking at fall marathons. It's an addiction.

Jeff, Wednesday, 21 October 2015 13:51 (ten years ago)

ha yes, that wave of entry mania that you get after doing a race. congrats on your marathon btw, and to simon too!

Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 14:26 (ten years ago)

my thing went well btw. was going to write some words about it, but still too knackered. anyhow, i ran every step with my sister - our time was 21 hrs 43 mins, so we beat 24 hrs, finished in the top third and - most importantly - enjoyed every minute of it

Haino Corrida (NickB), Wednesday, 21 October 2015 14:29 (ten years ago)

Amazing.
