Knew this episode would be unpopular on Ilxor.
also, xp flappy-bird

ILXors selectively missing the many many parts of that episode where they actually side/agree with PC culture/goals is just as bad as "south park republicans" thinking it was a huge shot at PC CULTURE GONE MAD
― posts baloney - whine iverson (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 05:18 (ten years ago)
The entire fucking thing was about coming to terms with the fact that society is changing and maybe doing a show run on handicapped and asian jokes for 19 years may not have been the best decision

"Because PC Principal [principle] is right, Kyle. You and I are bigots, and it's time for us to grow up."
"If I can face my prejudice, why can't you? We're two privileged, straight white boys who have their laughs about things we never had to deal with."

kind of a worthless mea culpa when a) they continue to mine those subjects for laffs and b) people complained about that shit 19 years ago too
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)
I wonder if the makers of south park were to notice yr standard ilxor taking a standard ilx position on any one thing might they feel that perhaps that position had been noted, in its good and bad, in the majority of south park shows, my guess is that they might feel that it had so I'm wondering why standard ilxors are taking standard ilx positions itt.
― deejerk reactions (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 15:43 (ten years ago)
the character meant to be imparting those ~lessons~ is beating the shit out of them.
the only part of the episode you could take "straight" was the elderly neighbors (aka Parker and Stone, increasingly estranged from their target audience) saying "welp, this is happening again, gonna blow over soon enough!"
― the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)
What exactly is the standard ilxor position?

Cartman: "[S]ometimes joking about un-PC things can actually be important, because it starts a dialogue. . . . What's wrong, Kyle? You have your cake. Eat it, too.
Stan: It just seems to me like we all lost in this, and that the only person who won was you.
standard ilxor postion?
To take something innocuous and blow it out of proportion just for the sake of being pissed off?

haven't watched this show in eons
"pc" covers a rather wide spectrum, aside from whatever Bill Maher is bleating about in a given week

the half of the outraged people watching south park who feel that the right wing was being boosted or not being satirised enough, yknow yourself.
― deejerk reactions (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 20:30 (ten years ago)
Not outraged I just don't find "South Park is a victim of PC culture" very funny nor deep commentary on anything other than South Park.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 20:40 (ten years ago)
The one "right wing" leaning SP moment that I often wonder about is the global warming mention in the now 10+ year old episode about future people coming back in time and taking everyone's jobs. The delivery made it sound like they weren't necessarily making a joke about "shit rednecks say", and were actually bashing global warming science (The line went something like "Even if global warming was real, which all proven scientific data shows it is not, how would that... etc."). I remember hearing something about them being friends with Penn & Teller who were also deniers at the time. But maybe I misinterpreted. If not, I wonder what they'd say about it now.
― Evan, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 20:40 (ten years ago)
Like that was the whole point of the show, right? Freedom of speech being squashed for people with mainstream tv, movie, and Broadway hits.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 20:42 (ten years ago)
Ie. the creators of South Park.
idk was it but I didn't watch it in your house iykwim
― deejerk reactions (darraghmac), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 20:45 (ten years ago)
It didn't speak to me bc i don't have a hit tv show where people complain if i randomly have refugees show up for no reason. I can see it speaking to you if you think PC people need to be made upset as a means to an end.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 20:46 (ten years ago)
You have to admit the ends was sloppy, like they were just throwing things at the screen hoping something sticks.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 20:47 (ten years ago)
end
ah no, not as a means to an end or anything tbf

It seems weird to do a current events episode all about PC stuff and have a frat and not address all the frat scandals that were big news. There were all these stories of frat houses in rape scandals and singing racist songs and stuff they could have mined for material.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)
why do these episodes all have to have a message at all? SP has a history of taking whatever's current and finding a way to subvert it into absurdity, ever since the "Butt Out" episode I stopped thinking they were earnestly trying to make a point about anything
― frogbs, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 21:50 (ten years ago)
Its weird to pretend they dont have an agenda or a consistent pov is all

I thought that "we didn't listen!" episode was making fun of climate change deniers?
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 13:48 (ten years ago)
that they tend to make fun of "both sides" on any given issue is not really evidence of them being impartial, particularly when facts are involved and one side is a total fact-free zone, as with climate change.
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 18:38 (ten years ago)
I mean I guess it's nice that they acknowledge that they are having their cake and eating it too by doing politically irresponsible shit and simultaneously claiming that they are not saying anything politically relevant, but it still makes them assholes for doing it in the first place.

thx to goole for finding this link, which I think is helpful in deconstructing what exactly is wrong with South Park's "we make fun of BOTH sides!" defense when it comes to certain issues: http://www.vox.com/2015/8/27/9214015/tech-nerds-politics
there's obvious overlaps between South Park and techbrotarian approaches. Probably not a coincidence that my first exposure to South Park was when some tech bros at Burning Man were passing around the original "Xmas Card"
― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 23 September 2015 21:13 (ten years ago)
