Be wary of Dr Morbius's advice: Old City (aka Old Port, Vieux Port, Old Montreal) is a lousy place to stay; it's fake, touristy Montreal. But nice to visit for an afternoon!

Stay in one of these neighbourhoods:
PLATEAU MONT-ROYAL, MILE END, PETITE ITALIE

Don't spend your money on pizza or sushi.

Do spend your money on pastries (St-Viateur Bagel, Mamie Clafoutis, Kouign Amann, Patrice Patissier, Paltoquet, Alati Caserta), ice-cream (Ripples, Kem Coba, Havre Aux Glaces), middle-eastern food (Alep, Damas, Sumac, Kaza Maza) and [relatively cheap] high-end dining (Salmigondis, Lawrence, Joe Beef, Foodlab, Lemeac [after 10pm special], Nora Grey).

Kazu is the only Japanese place worth your ducats.

Good beer at Dieu-du-Ciel and Vices Et Versa.

Coffee at Myriade/Dispatch (third wave) or Cafe Olimpico/Caffe Italia (Italian espresso).

Best cheap eats: Euro-Deli Batory, Thanjai, Kanbai, Pho Tay Ho, Romados, Chalet BBQ, Le Pick-Up.

while this thread is popped up i am wondering montreal food people: how does montreal stack up in the west indian food dep't vs. other cities? i have been kind of addicted to boom j's cuisine lately, a total gem in verdun, but my palette is unrefined and i want to know if anyone has had it/compared it to the rest of the city's options/compared it to other cities? they have some stinkers on their menu but for my money it's one of the best goat rotis i've ever had (and i used to live beside that place on parc that moved to st. laurent, jardin de cari i think it was called?)

oops i am mixing up caraibe delite and jardin du cari. anyway both were good & i like boom j's more!

Oh there are so many places to try for poutine. You could have a poutine week of your very own.

I was in mile end on casgrain around 6pm on Thursday and was like "mile end has a rush hour now?" It felt weird.

Pop Montreal was fun (though i did less stuff than usually this year.) Esp because Babes in Toyland! And watching my baby hands-in-the-air dance-crawl to live-band karaoke at Kids Pop :)

ok but actually seriously if anyone finds themselves in st. henri for ??some reason?? between like 10am and 10pm most days, go to cafe frida. two dollar tacos made by a mom and they're so good! my roommate's review: "CHEAPER THAN GROCERIES" (<--double true in st.h)

Stevie you should do a St-Henri afternoon or evening if you have time, see the canal too.

The guy who fake-ran for the Conservative party and then was kicked out when discovered to be a hoax is now an independent candidate - and in my riding! You should fake-vote for him.

i voted yesterday :) went in to register, thought i would have to vote on the other side of town (and therefore decided to not cast an advance blalot and wait until my day)... and then they were like "you wanna vote now?" and i was like "sweet 2 for 1" so i did it! yaaaaaaaay it was painless

Opinions:

The top of the mountain is so pretty
Everyone everywhere is insanely well-dressed
Poutine is NOT something you need to eat every day, also it is p good but not mind blowing
The bagels are p great but not mind blowing but I love a bagel so I love them
People are so thoughtful and polite! The bodega cashier offered us a tray of cookies when we bought a Kit Kat! The barista gave us small chocolates with our coffee!
Transit riders are also weirdly polite. People wait in a single file line for the bus and people give their seats to the elderly

ha i have heard people being surprised by the single file line for buses... it's insane to me that people do it any other way elsewhere!

Lmao I saw Guerilla Toss in a basement like 3 years ago and it sounded like a group of toddlers having a collective temper tantrum and banging on things and shrieking, which I know is v "old man yells at cloud" but I am largely down w noise music and they just sounded like a bad parody of a noise band, or what a Mom would image noise music to be like. Everyone loves them though and people keep telling me they're so great. Where is the venue?
