Can we start the igram backlash yet?

calstars, Sunday, 6 September 2015 21:25 (ten years ago)

on public transportation in nyc, people are inevitably looking at either igram or fbook

calstars, Sunday, 6 September 2015 21:26 (ten years ago)

I've said it elsewhere, but the new Instagram location feature is the best.

Here's the Reno Walmart, one of the nearest box stores to #burningman.

What's new about the location feature?

calstars, Sunday, 6 September 2015 23:27 (ten years ago)

You couldn't search it before.

You could click a location if you saw it on a pic, but you couldn't query it.

four months pass...

way too many ads now :/

Spottie, Monday, 1 February 2016 18:25 (ten years ago)

I haven't seen a single one yet

calstars, Monday, 1 February 2016 20:39 (ten years ago)

what? how

Spottie, Monday, 1 February 2016 21:28 (ten years ago)

I see sponsored post ads, but some of the folks I follow on Instagram are basically posting ads anyway (but they are ones I want to see)-- just for DC go-go gigs, New Orleans brass ones, afrobeat/afropop dj nights, etc.

curmudgeon, Monday, 1 February 2016 21:42 (ten years ago)

I get a ton of ads now. never used to until a couple months back maybe.

kind of getting done with instagram i think.

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Monday, 1 February 2016 21:49 (ten years ago)

and there's only so many times I can share photos of my cat, weird graffiti, sunset over the ocean, or some mountains.

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Monday, 1 February 2016 21:50 (ten years ago)

I've never seen an ad on the 'stagram

glandular lansbury (sic), Monday, 1 February 2016 21:50 (ten years ago)

hmm. wonder what the reason behind some of us getting ads and others not. im on android.

Cornelius Pardew (jim in glasgow), Monday, 1 February 2016 21:56 (ten years ago)

these are all in my feed within the last 12 hours

maybe a function of how many followers or posts or followers you have. I have under 10 of all of those. iPhone.

calstars, Monday, 1 February 2016 23:20 (ten years ago)

*people you follow

Sidestepping from the advert discussion, a thriller series is playing uniquely on Instagram this month via 15-second video posts each day, plus accompanying photos... http://www.shield5.com

NWOFHM! Overlord (krakow), Monday, 1 February 2016 23:29 (ten years ago)

i have iPhone and a few hundred posts/followers/following.

Spottie, Monday, 1 February 2016 23:34 (ten years ago)

Plenty of adverts here, but they're not too obnoxious yet.

Instagram advertising is a straightforward option when making Facebook adverts and sponsored/boosted posts nowadays. Tried it once so far as an experiment, but Instagram still works well organically, so we haven't found the need yet.

How I (Almost) Made Big Money Working From Home Promoting Products on Instagram

this is probably the first major trend that I managed to miss entirely before everyone was not only on it but already in backlash
i kinda hate primary visually oriented communication.

def a lot less posting of late.

Today's snap is tomorrow's Instagram post.

Any Given User (Eazy), Thursday, 30 June 2016 16:03 (nine years ago)

I think the bigger scale of Snapchat's images doesn't get noted enough. A snap photo has to be cropped to fit on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and so on, keeping a Snap photo from being interchangeable on other platforms.

Any Given User (Eazy), Thursday, 30 June 2016 16:04 (nine years ago)

the number of photos shared on average by each Instagram user fell

Weird wording there. When I think of "share", I think of what you do on Facebook with someone else's content or retweeting something on Twitter.

People "post" their photos on Instagram, and I get the idea what the writer is saying. There's a share button, but I rarely, rarely ever see it used by anyone.

pplains, Thursday, 30 June 2016 16:32 (nine years ago)

Under 21 folks I know seem to mostly just use snapchat.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 30 June 2016 17:20 (nine years ago)

Music geeks keep posting pics and video clips of gigs on Instagram as well as via other social media outlets

curmudgeon, Thursday, 30 June 2016 19:16 (nine years ago)

Anyone know if you can upload to instagram from your laptop? I've found a few software packages on google but thought I'd check if any of you have used them first.

Chris, Sunday, 3 July 2016 01:37 (nine years ago)

The new non-chronologic algorithm combined with an explosion of ads in my feed (every 2-3 pix?) pretty much turned me off of IG.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 3 July 2016 01:45 (nine years ago)

I usually scroll down until I hit one that I've already seen.

So now with the new algorithm, I hardly spend any time at all on Instagram!

pplains, Sunday, 3 July 2016 03:04 (nine years ago)

That article also links to an article saying that facebook users have been sharing less of their personal lives, which is an interesting development that accords with my observations -- people have gotten a lot more selective inasmuch as there's no longer any novelty to just saying whatever the fuck you're doing/eating/thinking right now.

pplains, Sunday, 3 July 2016 04:08 (nine years ago)

instagram is gd imo. like it is something you read when you are in a queue to access memes + screenshotted details of interesting internet information + then just cool world glimpses. abbott wrote something in another thread abt the virtue of smartphones being how you can foto the weird shit that stumbles into yr view while you are out of the house, + instagram is the repository for this at the moment i think.

i get kinda hazy abt [platform] is dying !!! hysteria bc it is like ... like websites are dying ... which they are .. but also they are not ... meaningfully dying ... i can read a website ... lots of websites ... instagram is fine ... it's fine. you know

schlump, Sunday, 3 July 2016 04:28 (nine years ago)

also oh my god have you seen this cat ?
i lose my mind, it's like lolita for me, i did not know i cd feel this way abt a cat !!!

Prisma is cheesy as hell but also sort of fascinating that one-touch artification took this long to arrive.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 18:50 (nine years ago)

i finally get instagram. it's so much less pressure than twitter and even facebook. there's very little talking! no need to craft a joke! you just look! and like! that's it! but i now am connecting with friends that i never connected with before on FB or tworter. yes tworter.

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 19:08 (nine years ago)

I sure know a lot of people who like cats

dr. mercurio arboria (mh 😏), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 19:54 (nine years ago)

Instagram suggestions are the worst - I follow one friend who's a local MMA fighter, so the suggestions are non-stop UFC and wrestling memes.
Then I guess I know some vegans because today it was all horrifying PETA ad stuff with people shooting animals for fur and dead lambs. WTF.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Wednesday, 5 October 2016 20:12 (nine years ago)

someone told me they like instagram more than other social media bc no one can complain on instagram

i tried FaceApp after seeing all my friends do some crazy stuff w it on instagram. it's pretty wild. you have to pay to get a lot of the options, but you can still generate Smiling, Young, Old, Male, Female versions of faces. it's pretty spooky. lol i did the old one and i think it was too realistic looking it was scary lol.

it is pretty remarkable how well the algorithm does its job imo so far everything looks very seamless and it is supremely creepy to see an app photoshop a almost-perfect smile onto your face in 15 seconds. fun app if you like cyber divining.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 28 April 2017 19:35 (nine years ago)

when i ran the "old" filter on me i thought it was showing me a picture of my dad it had found somewhere on my phone. terrifying.
