i hate when cars stop for me unless there's a red light - it throws everybody out, i do that dithering thing where you've still got to look the other way...just let me cross when there's a natural gap, i'm not giving you a courtesy medal for anything

MC Whistler (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 23 August 2015 20:30 (eight years ago) link

i can't stand when someone's trying to turn onto a two lane road, but another vehicle is leaving that two-lane road from the opposite direction, and instead of just going into the wide open lane, they wait for the other vehicle to leave.

IT"S BIG ENOUGH FOR TWO VEHICLES WITH A LITTLE SPACE LEFT OVER! the fuck you think is gonna happen, the other car is going to magically expand and consume your vehicle? stop making me wait behind you.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 23 August 2015 20:41 (eight years ago) link

(ie, usually this happens in parking lots etc)

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Sunday, 23 August 2015 20:41 (eight years ago) link

Yeah really don't like that supposedly generous road crossing thing. Way too many times when you do have a visible interval screwed up by nervous driver slowing to let you cross.
Thinking about it logically gap may be a traffic light earlier on the road or something.
Think I had several drivers in my hitching years explain theories of motorway traffic moving in waves too.

Stevolende, Sunday, 23 August 2015 23:03 (eight years ago) link

The other somewhat similar thing is when you're sitting on a bus and its a popular stop so a lot of people want to get off including the person sitting on the seat inside from you. & you say i'll let the people behind go by then let you out. & then you get some supposedly kind soul wanting or insisting that you get out first which screws everything up. Like they're refusing to come any further forward until you've moved but you want to move into the space that would be behind where they've just passed you.

Or once having to dive to get past a wave of people getting off at a popular stop when I've been standing towards the front of the bus. & there's a pole in the middle of the walkway which people are trying to come around both sides of, which means that everybody standing would be herded to the front of the bus. & there are seats behind where the walking part of the crowd are, you just can't get at them because people aren't thinking and just scrambling to get forward.
Maybe only losers take the bus.

Stevolende, Monday, 24 August 2015 08:13 (eight years ago) link

oh yeah the bus sucks. When I used to ride a bus to work I got on at a stop (on the right side of road) that was a block away from where the bus had to make a left turn. So the driver would always act like he didn't see anyone waiting at my stop so he could move into the left lane a block early. I would have to run across a lane and bang on the door for him to let me in and he'd claim that no one was at the stop and I must have just appeared from nowhere.

bus = people who get on when there is no seating left, and proceed to stand at the front of the bus when there's ample room towards the back so that nobody else can get on without shoving their way through forcefully

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 24 August 2015 17:03 (eight years ago) link

too rational

Evan, Monday, 24 August 2015 17:13 (eight years ago) link

Yeah, hate that and will try to tell people when there is seating towards the back. Happens a lot at one particular stop which is outside of one of the 2 major 3rd level education places in town, which is one of the main stops that people get on and off at. could be a number of non-student residential areas that that is the main stop for too.
& was the stop I had to dive around the pole at, as mentioned earlier (pole is actually slightly off to one side in front of optional seating/buggy/wheelchair area.

& students get on the bus and don't look any further down so bus is not able to take on any new passengers unless bus driver recognises space behind them is clear and physically has to ask people to move down.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 12:48 (eight years ago) link

I feel like a point has been reached where groups of students walking four abreast the sidewalk would rather blankly slam into people coming the opposite way than duck out of the way at the last second. It must have something to do way attachment parenting.

Yeah, I have to restrain myself from posting any sort of transportation related woes here. Odds are that millions of people have the same exact peeves no matter how minor they are

it has become apparent to me that certain groups of ppl walking on a sidewalk in conversation will prioritize continuing their conversation over moving to accomodate oncoming pedestrians

it's like they can't do both

it drives me insane

failing that, stop in a doorway but continue the conversation if you and your oppo are set to go in different directions.

THIS FUCKING COMMERCIAL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LnuWQgL7Wg

Way to make it ALL ABOUT YOU, dude. Like you couldn't even ask her what's wrong? You just had to immediately launch into your nice guy screed about how not all boys are dicks? So gross.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 26 August 2015 13:32 (eight years ago) link

The screed is such awkward exposition too. He could have just offered her a tissue and that would have conveyed the point of the ad that boys sometimes offer people tissues.

jmm, Wednesday, 26 August 2015 15:45 (eight years ago) link

Instead it conveyed the point that boys and their feelings are always the center of the universe.

IA because it doesn't impact me at all, but I hate when people get on an elevator, press a floor, and then get off at the next stop, which isn't theirs, because they just assumed theirs was next and didn't bother looking at the number.

it makes me IA cos it's so dumb - just like people who ask "is this elevator going down" after walking right by the indicator arrow.

Herbie Mann's Push Push Pops (Old Lunch), Thursday, 27 August 2015 00:55 (eight years ago) link

yeah, it's weird, I feel like in earlier times they would have made that commercial and just had the boy checking to see if anyone was looking and slipping the girl a tissue w/o the "not all boys, m'lady" monologue

I loathe Floridians during hurricane season. all the information in the world on NHC's website and everybody ignores it and goes by what they heard three days ago from the toupeed newscaster. on the one hand if it gets them to stock up on supplies, good, on the other, tired of a bunch of amateur civilian "meteorologists" making their 'guesses'.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Saturday, 29 August 2015 13:33 (eight years ago) link

Pocket construction pain. Not quite getting the full 3D construction of something that should be simple but has an extra element. So having to spend hours unpicking again. Bummer.
Have to hope I do have picture correct for next attempt and the fabric can stand it.

When I worked in a building with an elevator that would be jam packed in the morning there would always be the asshole that would ride to the first floor. Eve heard of stairs, motherfucker????

UYD: Oxys, Percs, Vics, Addys, Rit-Dogs and Xannys (sunny successor), Friday, 4 September 2015 05:09 (eight years ago) link

Poorly timed open door holding also makes me IA. At my job we need to swipe our ID card to get in. In the morning I'm carrying my backpack with laptop unit, my handbag, a drink and the access card. If a dude sees me a good 40 feet away he'll hold the door open for me which means I have start running. This morning one guy got so frazzled doing it our convo went like this:
Me: thank you
The guy: have a great day your'e welcome not a problem. im sorry[

What?????

UYD: Oxys, Percs, Vics, Addys, Rit-Dogs and Xannys (sunny successor), Friday, 4 September 2015 05:27 (eight years ago) link

sunnnnyyyyyy there could be lots of reasons why people can't use stairs that would not be obvious to the casual observer.

I hate the awkward etiquette of door holding, though. And that conversation is LOL.

carl agatha, Friday, 4 September 2015 12:17 (eight years ago) link

the whole door holding thing is why I deliberately walk out of the line of vision of the people in the elevator to pretend I'm *leaving* so as to avoid that silly charade.

the alternative is to spit on the floor and shriek "I DEFY YOU" and point at the elevator holder, that will usually make them speed away

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Friday, 4 September 2015 12:52 (eight years ago) link

this is just straightup rational anger

two lane road in fromt of a construction site narrows to a single lane bc of construction, cyclone fence on one side, orange rubber poles & big signs along the other side to guide you through

woman drives slooowly about halfway along & just STOPS bc she is confused
opens car door
looks around
makes confused gestures at us behind her
while we all YELL
me & the car in front are trapped, we can't turn around or back out, she just needs to fucking go & she just sits there looking confused

she gets out of the car! and goes to the car in front of me to ask what is happening & how does she even & the driver says idk JUST FUCKING DRIVE YOU TWIT or something but it works & she finally moves along

but jeeeeeeesus christ lady

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 5 September 2015 04:17 (eight years ago) link

not sure who i like better, the guy who just hits the button to wait while the door slowly opens or the guy who when someone is holding the door open for him hits the button instead of holding the door for the next person
