I had no idea that Sacks had come out as gay in his memoir until i read his last NY Times piece about 3 weeks ago.

(unless that was general knowledge before the book?)

was going to say 'it's v sad' but then reconsidered (how can anyone presume to make such a judgment on another person's life, ultimately), i.e. that iirc he seems to have had brief intense relationship in his youth & ever since chose decades of celibacy & solitude (most of his life)

(especially such a full rich & wonderful life)

(i regret bringing up that angle; this is one of the problems with biography & the crudeness/ presumptuousness of its-- one's-- my-- projections)

sad. i saw him play with jerry's arkestra last summer at the barbican, one of the greatest shows I've ever seen.

I saw him at the Glasgow Jazz Festival in 2007 as part of the Legends of Jazz with Coleridge Goode, Russ Henderson, Will Gaines, Andy Hamilton, Harry Beckett, Tan Tan Thornton and Kenrick Rowe. Some line-up, that.

He'd always be on the annual NYE Hootenanny (BBC, Jools Holland), I think he missed the last one and I did fear he was unwell.
