why do i hate that artist thing that people keep posting on my facebook so much? why am i such a jerk?

like 30 seconds after hashtags were invented ppl started using them in a jocular way that fast overtook their alleged primary purpose

never joined twitter & had not visited when i started to encounter hashtags in discourse
picked up meaning of meta-hashtag before learning (supposed) original meaning/purpose of hashtag
so hashtags have always already been meta for me

that doesn’t make (most uses of) hashtag trope any less annoying, though
like as an obv overt sign(al), shortcut to meaning/speech-act (e.g. automatic irony)

Some friends have a name portmonteau hashtag to talk about their wedding on social media.

I almost decided to skip it right there.

even when clever joke, something about individual speech-acts taking form of mass category/corporate brand is inherently off-putting or depressing to me

like putting trademark symbol after one's utterances

I got a little handwringy about activism hashtags for a bit but eventually decided their usefulness and necessity in today's world probably outweighs the problems they raise.

^this is v true
but, even as i recognize that, must admit i still feel something like gut discomfort/dislike/distrust re hashtag form
as rhetorical trope & shorthand in political discourse

in some cases they seem/feel less like speech or even slogan/banner
& more just like shibboleth

oh well i'm outmoded outlier who doesn't even use social media
so my feelings re hashtags hardly relevant

Depends on the privacy settings of your friend or the person who's made the post. Like if a friend-of-my-friend makes all posts public and my friend comments on one of their posts, I see it. Bothers the hell out of me.
