beetlejuice vs. gary "battle of the wits" is a classic and that was pre-9/11.

There was a lot of great pre-9/11 stuff, comedy just doesn't age well dudes.

once you get familiar with the 90s cast, it's good. obviously a lot of the bits seem stupid or dated now but lots of great interpersonal stuff.

Man I miss Jackie, Fred, Howard and an assortment of second-string Stern people and Wack Packers in that (seemingly) tiny studio.

Listening to the History of... Act 4 at the minute and the seemingly relentless *cough* Homo *cough* Fag stuff is hair raising.

the show's okay now, dull as it's ever been. appreciating no bobo. all the bits are horrible. i wonder who listens, though, outside of aging diehard fans.

I hadn't listened for close to 20 years, and then started up again this year. I like the interviews -- in fact, the bits and all the "wack pack" characters start to feel soul-crushing after a while, while the interviews reveal Stern as not only a real person, but an INCREDIBLE interviewer. Seriously, he may be the best interviewer alive today. I usually don't give a shit about celebrity interviews either, but this guy had me interested in Mayim Bialik, Alex Baldwin, James fucking Taylor, David fucking Crosby.

I also like the stuff where he just talks about his life, Beth, etc. He's mellowed over the years (except when he gets mad at his own staff), and other than a juvenile sense of humor, he could be a better Barbara Walters than Barbara Walters.

I think my favorite part of the show is when H loses his cool and screams. On Monday he was setting up a Beetlejuice game and there was some discussion about how many questions would be asked, when H yells "3 OUT OF 5 SEEMS RIGHT"

the coffee is a blessing that regard--he definitely seems way more energized.

great to hear artie breaking john's balls again, never tire of goofing on the audition tape, behind the scenes stuff, marci turk conspiracy insight.

yesterday's episode was really special from beginning to end. starting with harry nilsson, howie getting emotional in the elevator, jewel interview, mercury in retrograde...

I loved the announce bits and Howard trying to one-up Broadway Bill....W C! BS had me in tears

"You're Breakin' My Heart" was played at the very beginning of the show. I listen to the show on demand on Sirius, and usually they play a couple songs or bits before "American Nightmare"

The Marci stuff, if true, doesn't bother me. I just wish he'd spend more time goofing and less on interviews with celebrities that were A-list 20 years ago.

John is such a dumbazz, even moreso than Gary...still putting up with all the goofing from Artie. Feel so bad for the guy.

howard talked about the podcast this week, he went into a whole "we love & miss artie, we wish him the best, we did great work together" speech, was bummed out about a disparaging & false story that said artie was talking shit... it was really sweet :'(

I didn't know about the Artie Quitter podcast until seeing it mentioned in this thread the other day. I had a long drive, so I checked out Artie's show from last Monday where he started it out talking about Stern's show uninterrupted for about 50 minutes straight. I can't remember the last time I found myself hanging onto his every word like that. It kinda made me miss his era of the show even more. I was expecting a reaction from Stern the following day (last Tuesday I guess), but was kinda sad to hear that it wasn't acknowledge at all. I'm happy Howard discussed it this week though. I guess it took him a few days to get around to it.

Now when I walk around the city I see those bumps on every corner

right the never told before story about getting a girl pregnant in l.a. and she gets an abortion...
long rumination on how if the kid was born here probably be on the long list of people who don't want to talk to him because he's a self destructive asshole and he didn't want howard to be on the list
then iiilistened to the show where howard threw a surprise birthday party for artie
and they haven't really spoken in six years

it's strange, but perhaps not that strange, that he could be so funny on the show while his stand-up is pretty bad (imo).

artie podcast was good for exactly 2 days while the howard stuff happened and now it back to being sucky and artie is pretty "wahhhhh love me daddy" with the whole "howard doesnt call me!" stuff. like dude you did heroin while you were at the studio fuck off.

Except that bit about truly being scared of gays and dicks and how he's not ashamed to be homophobic. I heard it in a bumper maybe 10 years ago when I started listening regularly again

Artie needs a foil to be funny, someone to compete against. These current guys are not on his level obv, and I guess neither was Nick Dip a couple years back.

sure he did heroin in the studio but probably accompanied by richard or sal? singing ARTIE SNORTS HEROIN ARTIE SNORTS HEROIN or recordings of him in withdrawal calling "hey, gar, it's artie..." over sound effects of lines being chopped. he wasn't like a receptionist in a dental office or something.

if anyone said hey, that fat drug addict we hired off a story about snorting cocaine and who later admitted to being a heroin addict and who we saw repeatedly nodding off and having violent outbursts in the studio... that guy takes drugs??? IN THE STUDIO???? i dunno.

I was thinking while listening to the Artie/John podcast how deadening it must be to be in a world when your supposed friends and colleagues can say horrible, shitty things to your face and you can't defend yourself because it's just 'busting chops'

i dunno. i think john/artie is pretty mild and they've got some sort of friendship and respect and are both successful at what they do and have made a ton of cash and it's generally funny.

but i've listened intently to hours and hours of stern and my favorite moments are supposed friends and colleagues saying horrible things to each other.
