so many great shots today. phil was a blast to watch, spieth on the back nine. finau nailing every put. jones hitting the ball out of a spectator tent. tomorrow should be awesome.

how many majors will jason day win?

watched a few holes last night, including jason day hitting maybe the worst shot he's ever hit as a pro (100-yard chip onto the green off the fairway, hit the ground about 3 inches before the ball, sent it 50 yards forward), but he seemed to be playing brilliantly aside from that - he's looked very accomplished every time I've seen him and there was no horror run of bad luck (or vertigo attack) to derail his challenge this time. very pleased for the lad

nah i'd say lowry has a major in him but i dunno if he's at that level. i also actually think for all the lol he he loves a pint stuff if he's that weight he's at a disadvantage to the others - they're all pretty physically fit now, i don't think you can be a serious contender if you're not.

ah fair enough. you never know, he could win a few. has the look of someone with the ruthlessness to do so, unlike say justin rose, who will probably never win a major despite playing truly exceptional golf in the majority of tournaments he enters. certainly inherited the mantle that was once mickelson's and then garcia's

unlike rory mcilroy! rory's dgaf attitude is kinda sad i think. i mean i guess he enjoys himself and he'll win a couple of majors, but he really isn't that arsed.

oh but rose does gaf! just doesn't quite have the strength of mind. mcilroy sort of does have it, despite his seeming diffidence.

for that reason, if justin rose ever does rouse himself to win a major it'd take a particularly heartless idiot or remarkable circumstances elsewhere to not vote for him in that year's spoty

i'm reading shane ryan's slaying the tiger, which is absolutely worth a weekend if you follow golf, and his profile of day had me really pulling for the guy.

Reckon McIlroy will break Faldo's record for most majors by an European golfer. Inconsistent but he'll find the form at enough weekends to do so and has enough years in him.

mcilroy will definitely win a few more majors but i bet spieth wins more. and i dunno if that's purely talent, it's hard to say with golf where talent ends and hard work begins. but like most things the latter will probably get you further.

concentration and drive fall under both talent and hard work imo - spieth has all in multitudes

the classic irish example would be clarke and harrington. clarke was definitely more gifted, harrington worked his ass off to win those three majors.

As a resident of Sheboygan it has been real amusing seeing random golfers all over town. Best of all was seeing Dustin Johnson buying like $50 worth of Chex Mix and Gardettos at the Kohler market, while his bikini model wife waited in the car looking really bored. WTF is one man gonna do with all that Chex Mix??

it is a crunchy snack mix with little corn and rice cereal pieces, pretzels, and some other stuff. it comes in several flavors, though classic, which is sort of a soy-umami bomb, is the best.

spieth cleaned house w that win. 10 mill and probs player of the year and #1 ranking back. pretty great season, excited for next year.

Was watching a bit of the broadcast today (hardly ever do anymore), and they were saying some player was learning to bounce back from his bad shots. Which made me think that you could track that--what do different players score on holes following bogeys/doubles/etc.?

Have golf analytics taken hold like in baseball (majorly) or hockey/basketball (seem to be just taking off--football I don't know about)? There would seem to be room for such a thing, although I'm not sure how useful they'd be. Maybe the standard stuff--driving distance/accuracy, putts-per-round, etc.--correlates well enough to the best players.

Who is everyone picking for the Masters?

so stoked for the masters. i think jason day is clearly the best player ie he's excellent at all facets of the game, although most pundits seem to think rory is the guy. winning 3 tournaments in a row seems like a lot however so i'll take mcilroy or koepka.

so many players have credentials and are in form though, scott, bubba, phil (kinda)

btw lydia ko was awesome when she won her 2nd major last week, all those clutch par putts on the back nine culminating at the 18th where she laid up to the par 5 at about 90 yards:

she puts it about 2 feet above and to the left of the hole, taps in for birdie and the win. ice cold.

think dechambeau is playing with spieth, find him v interesting what with having all his irons the same length and lie. i wonder if the other players ask to have a go with his clubs on the range?

I'm no aficionado, so I'll be stubbornly backing Rickie Fowler like I do every tournament, though I can definitely see Scott or Day taking this. Or McIlroy of course.

I have a feeling about Danny Willett too. He's on great form and seems to be on the rise in general, perhaps buoyed by being a new father. Also can't shake floating inklings for Oosthuizen and Matsuyama.

fowler is usually so aggressive with his putss i wonder how that plays out on these greens although so was tiger and he seemed to manage fine.

matsuyama is a good shout tangentx2, p long and has a great putting stroke.

i find spieth fascinating in that i've never been all that impressed with how he hits the ball even last year when he was having a year for the ages. although i may have just taken against him because he is so fucking slow.

I'm not enthusiastic about Spieth either, especially since imago took to suddenly watching the golf and supporting him... And yes, so slow. I like the aggressive and creative players best.

Wind is apparently picking up later so I'm hoping Fowler can get some more birdies in nice and early...
