ah...do you mean the bumpers? As in "You're listening to the HSS...and now, a word from Crazy Alice..."

calstars, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 20:00 (ten years ago)

those are hella annoying. I usually just turn down the volume for a few minutes. They don't have commercials on the on demand downloads.

calstars, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 20:01 (ten years ago)

ya the bumpers but there are like even more "concept" bits every day now like.. "here's donald trump going to the dentist robin.." ugh

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Wednesday, 12 August 2015 20:15 (ten years ago)

i've only listened since 2011, and i find most pre-9/11 shows a snooze -- 2001 to 2010 sweet spot decade for me, covering the final years on terrestrial, emergence of artie, satellite. but i've gone back and listened to most of the 90s and i can tolerate late-90s the best.

the show's okay now, dull as it's ever been. appreciating no bobo. all the bits are horrible. i wonder who listens, though, outside of aging diehard fans.

dylannn, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 20:53 (ten years ago)

i hate celebrity interviews.

dylannn, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 20:53 (ten years ago)

same...I skip over all the interviews

aug 16 2007 -- one of my favorites, partly because i like howard on the radio business + talking up records etc -- came up on mammary lane recently -- from the 40 minute mark, kenny the k

dylannn, Wednesday, 12 August 2015 21:08 (ten years ago)

sorry, i think it was deleted. if anyone can find that on youtube, i'd like to hear it again.

on the recorded bits, more: i have a problem with impressions of wack packers in particular, like the fake riley martin and fake big foot, and the rest is morning rock radio pushing the boundaries of decency but with actual bad words which makes it even less funny. bill cosby "99 victims and i fucked every one," particularly unfunny and hacky and gross.

dylannn, Thursday, 13 August 2015 07:00 (ten years ago)

another hour of coffee. amazing

flappy bird, Monday, 17 August 2015 21:32 (ten years ago)

He'll be adding that to the list of questions for celebrities now..."So Amy, how do you take your coffee in the morning?"

calstars, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 00:58 (ten years ago)

beetlejuice vs. gary "battle of the wits" is a classic and that was pre-9/11.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 04:40 (ten years ago)

There was a lot of great pre-9/11 stuff, comedy just doesn't age well dudes.

once you get familiar with the 90s cast, it's good. obviously a lot of the bits seem stupid or dated now but lots of great interpersonal stuff.

Gange looking like the guy who shot Cyrus in The Warriors.

Man I miss Jackie, Fred, Howard and an assortment of second-string Stern people and Wack Packers in that (seemingly) tiny studio.

Listening to the History of... Act 4 at the minute and the seemingly relentless *cough* Homo *cough* Fag stuff is hair raising.

I hadn't listened for close to 20 years, and then started up again this year. I like the interviews -- in fact, the bits and all the "wack pack" characters start to feel soul-crushing after a while, while the interviews reveal Stern as not only a real person, but an INCREDIBLE interviewer. Seriously, he may be the best interviewer alive today. I usually don't give a shit about celebrity interviews either, but this guy had me interested in Mayim Bialik, Alex Baldwin, James fucking Taylor, David fucking Crosby.

I also like the stuff where he just talks about his life, Beth, etc. He's mellowed over the years (except when he gets mad at his own staff), and other than a juvenile sense of humor, he could be a better Barbara Walters than Barbara Walters.

Dominique, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 14:39 (ten years ago)

great interview with colbert on right now

flappy bird, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 16:23 (ten years ago)

the bit as Cosby's driver was pretty great

I think my favorite part of the show is when H loses his cool and screams. On Monday he was setting up a Beetlejuice game and there was some discussion about how many questions would be asked, when H yells "3 OUT OF 5 SEEMS RIGHT"

calstars, Sunday, 30 August 2015 13:16 (ten years ago)

the coffee is a blessing that regard--he definitely seems way more energized.

ryan, Sunday, 30 August 2015 15:29 (ten years ago)

three weeks pass...

anyone heard the artie podcast where he and Stuttering John talk?

calstars, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 01:26 (ten years ago)

great to hear artie breaking john's balls again, never tire of goofing on the audition tape, behind the scenes stuff, marci turk conspiracy insight.

dylannn, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 07:51 (ten years ago)

Artie sounds so relaxed ...

calstars, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 16:45 (ten years ago)

yesterday's episode was really special from beginning to end. starting with harry nilsson, howie getting emotional in the elevator, jewel interview, mercury in retrograde...

flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

I loved the announce bits and Howard trying to one-up Broadway Bill....W C! BS had me in tears

calstars, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:03 (ten years ago)

I must have missed the Harry Nillson part?

calstars, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:04 (ten years ago)

dont forget the goofing on the cbs oldies dj, which was amazing.

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:04 (ten years ago)

xpost

yah i dont remember harry nilsson either?

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:04 (ten years ago)

"You're Breakin' My Heart" was played at the very beginning of the show. I listen to the show on demand on Sirius, and usually they play a couple songs or bits before "American Nightmare"

flappy bird, Tuesday, 22 September 2015 18:15 (ten years ago)

anyone heard the artie podcast where he and Stuttering John talk? then he kept talking about howard for a week.

calstars, your thoughts

dylannn, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 11:15 (ten years ago)

oh, does artie keep talking about H on subsequent podcasts? If so, will listen...

The Marci stuff, if true, doesn't bother me. I just wish he'd spend more time goofing and less on interviews with celebrities that were A-list 20 years ago.

John is such a dumbazz, even moreso than Gary...still putting up with all the goofing from Artie. Feel so bad for the guy.

calstars, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 13:46 (ten years ago)

howard talked about the podcast this week, he went into a whole "we love & miss artie, we wish him the best, we did great work together" speech, was bummed out about a disparaging & false story that said artie was talking shit... it was really sweet :'(

flappy bird, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 16:10 (ten years ago)

emily blunt interview rn is great

sidewalk bumps for the blind

flappy bird, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 17:36 (ten years ago)

I didn't know about the Artie Quitter podcast until seeing it mentioned in this thread the other day. I had a long drive, so I checked out Artie's show from last Monday where he started it out talking about Stern's show uninterrupted for about 50 minutes straight. I can't remember the last time I found myself hanging onto his every word like that. It kinda made me miss his era of the show even more. I was expecting a reaction from Stern the following day (last Tuesday I guess), but was kinda sad to hear that it wasn't acknowledge at all. I'm happy Howard discussed it this week though. I guess it took him a few days to get around to it.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 18:14 (ten years ago)

Now when I walk around the city I see those bumps on every corner

calstars, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 20:27 (ten years ago)

right the never told before story about getting a girl pregnant in l.a. and she gets an abortion...
long rumination on how if the kid was born here probably be on the long list of people who don't want to talk to him because he's a self destructive asshole and he didn't want howard to be on the list
then iiilistened to the show where howard threw a surprise birthday party for artie
and they haven't really spoken in six years

dylannn, Wednesday, 30 September 2015 23:45 (ten years ago)

sounds like I should check out Artie's podcast.

it's strange, but perhaps not that strange, that he could be so funny on the show while his stand-up is pretty bad (imo).

ryan, Thursday, 1 October 2015 00:04 (ten years ago)

artie podcast was good for exactly 2 days while the howard stuff happened and now it back to being sucky and artie is pretty "wahhhhh love me daddy" with the whole "howard doesnt call me!" stuff. like dude you did heroin while you were at the studio fuck off.

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Thursday, 1 October 2015 00:22 (ten years ago)

Artie's standup has always been *surprisingly* unfunny IMO

calstars, Thursday, 1 October 2015 00:47 (ten years ago)

Except that bit about truly being scared of gays and dicks and how he's not ashamed to be homophobic. I heard it in a bumper maybe 10 years ago when I started listening regularly again

calstars, Thursday, 1 October 2015 00:49 (ten years ago)

Right before KC got the axe

calstars, Thursday, 1 October 2015 00:50 (ten years ago)

Artie needs a foil to be funny, someone to compete against. These current guys are not on his level obv, and I guess neither was Nick Dip a couple years back.

calstars, Thursday, 1 October 2015 00:51 (ten years ago)

sure he did heroin in the studio but probably accompanied by richard or sal? singing ARTIE SNORTS HEROIN ARTIE SNORTS HEROIN or recordings of him in withdrawal calling "hey, gar, it's artie..." over sound effects of lines being chopped. he wasn't like a receptionist in a dental office or something.

dylannn, Thursday, 1 October 2015 02:47 (ten years ago)

if anyone said hey, that fat drug addict we hired off a story about snorting cocaine and who later admitted to being a heroin addict and who we saw repeatedly nodding off and having violent outbursts in the studio... that guy takes drugs??? IN THE STUDIO???? i dunno.

dylannn, Thursday, 1 October 2015 02:49 (ten years ago)

Wahhhhh

chaki (kurt schwitterz), Thursday, 1 October 2015 03:04 (ten years ago)

I have a feeling that when it's all over there might be a torrent of embittered books and articles from the key players, and probably the periphery.

― MaresNest, Wednesday, 22 May 2013 08:02 (2 years ago)

looking forward to stuttering john's book
