there's a thoughtpiece to be written about how this year is a zombie-fied version of the first season minus the occult

if you find yourself expressing sentiments like "look it's the genre" or "ok the last few episodes were pointless but the big setpiece in this one...wow"...they've already got you

da croupier, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:19 (ten years ago)

(i am watching this show while answering emails at this point myself btw)

after talking w/ppl last weekend who actually think it's good, i'm very comfortable with my position that it's bad with occasional things that are good.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:22 (ten years ago)

also it's bad in an interesting way.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:22 (ten years ago)

bad in an interesting way is often good enough

Brad C., Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:30 (ten years ago)

I look forward to this show and I enjoy the hour and change I get to spend in its weird world.

and for all his faults as a writer (which really aren't all that egregious) I think the unrelieved nihilism of his pov is refreshing.

ryan, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:34 (ten years ago)

and good vs bad is just so....I dunno, binary. it doesn't always reflect what I'm getting not not getting out of a show. the best negative take on the show is certainly schlump's itt.

ryan, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:37 (ten years ago)

xp agree p much wholeheartedly although w/ a bit more skepticism of pizzolatto as a whole

everything is fucking (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:43 (ten years ago)

they've already got you

lol that sneaky they, how hoodwinked i've been by watching a tv show

everything is fucking (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 4 August 2015 18:44 (ten years ago)

aw, my ellipsis was for naught

da croupier, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 19:00 (ten years ago)

funny that you mentioned the walking dead because i honestly think that show got waaaaaaay better in the latest season - albeit not before approx. 2 and a half seasons of near-execrability with interjections of occasionally well-done action, could never blame anyone for bailing on it or not believing it's better now

I can't get over all the steps along the way where they could have fixed the Fifedom disaster but either refused to or simply didn't realize the horror that had occurred.

I think the unrelieved nihilism of his pov is refreshing.

lol as a refreshment from what, life

j., Tuesday, 4 August 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)

pretty much!

ryan, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 23:46 (ten years ago)

otm

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 23:53 (ten years ago)

it's not entirely nihilistic (we'll see next ep)
antigone got 3 hugs in a day
& so far (somewhat surprisingly) seems like ray & frank (can) trust each other

drash, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 00:14 (ten years ago)

correction, 4 hugs

drash, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 00:16 (ten years ago)

it's not exactly an original conspiracy - a combined land grab/rackets grab - but so what, like this is a certain type of noir and people either are interested in that type of story or they aren't.

To be fair, after watching enough westerns I'm pretty much burned out on anything involving railroad land grab conspiracies. (except for Once Upon A Time In The West)

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 00:16 (ten years ago)

still need to make my gf watch that.

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 01:10 (ten years ago)

OUATitW is all-time awesome. It could be about a scheme to knock off the Wednesday night bingo game at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Boise, and it's style, cast, music, direction and photography would make it the most compelling heist movie ever.

Hydroelectric New Deal Demiurge (B.L.A.M.), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 06:04 (ten years ago)

i started turning on subtitles

― gr8080, Tuesday, 4 August 2015 16:08 (Yesterday) Permalink

I do this, and according to the subtitles Paul called his mom a "goose" whilst he was in the midst of a heated argument with her which I thought was strange but kinda cool. Of course I read this thread and Veg Girl drops the bomb that he actually called her a "cooze" which makes the scene a little different.lol

pandemic, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 09:49 (ten years ago)

'whooooo's a silly cooze, whooooooo's a silly cooooze, you are!! you're the silly cooze!!'

j., Wednesday, 5 August 2015 13:11 (ten years ago)

duck duck cooze

still like this show.
vince has improved a lot since the first few episodes.

i think some of the problem ppl are having w this show is that they may be used to watching, to be somewhat simplistic, plot-driven shows. true detective is character driven sometime to a fault. is there going to be any resolution to what happened in iraq? probably not. are we going to figure out whether kitsch was abused by mama? probably not. likewise the time spent on vince's breeding problems is not, in my eyes, integral to the plot. but it helps the viewer understand the characters more as people.

and perhaps most importantly, whenever i read "pizzolatto" i think of this-

ian, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 19:50 (ten years ago)

or was it afghanistan? either way.

ian, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 19:50 (ten years ago)

yeah that's well said. and I know many will disagree but script execution and sometimes performances aside I think most of the main characters are pretty interesting.

ryan, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 20:02 (ten years ago)

also... what if.... #fiefdom was an intentional mistake? to show that the character is not as smart as she thinks she is?
#whatif

ian, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 20:36 (ten years ago)

i think in some ways this show is about people pretending to be something other than what they are, and the consequences of that masquerade.

ian, Wednesday, 5 August 2015 20:37 (ten years ago)

I did like the twist of the mayor being shut out of the new operations, and someone who seemed like an adversary suddenly being part of the old guard getting shut out.

I would think the Mexicans and the Russians and the Carlyle--I mean, Catalyst--Group aren't all acting in sync before getting violent, and that they're going to turn on each other.

... (Eazy), Wednesday, 5 August 2015 20:45 (ten years ago)

This was helpful to me, since I'm hopeless at following detective show plots:

AKA Thermo Thinwall (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 6 August 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)

Fife ([ˈfəif]; Scottish Gaelic: Fìobha) is a council area and historic county of Scotland. It is situated between the Firth of Tay and the Firth of Forth, with inland boundaries to Perth and Kinross and Clackmannanshire. By custom it is widely held to have been one of the major Pictish kingdoms, known as Fib, and is still commonly known as the Kingdom of Fife within Scotland.

The Kingdom of Fib! So when she said "fife-dom," she was basically saying, his whole life was built on a lie.

Very subtle writing, you really have to pay attention.

something totally new, it’s the AOR of the twenty first century (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 6 August 2015 16:54 (ten years ago)

how can you pay attention to wikipedia while you're trying to illegally stream hbo programming in another tab

j., Thursday, 6 August 2015 16:56 (ten years ago)

True Detective is so subtle! Did you all notice the subtle way they showed how solipsistic and circular the demands of Frank Semyon have become?

ryan, Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:02 (ten years ago)

clearest evidence of how rushed this production was

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:05 (ten years ago)

realistic tho, he consistently misspells 'remmington'

j., Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)

also, jeeeeeeesus that's so many guns, and he only has like, two goons left (i think?) along with himself and his wife! solid choices tho

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:07 (ten years ago)

lol at the greek guys taking this raving nutjob seriously; they will show up with a nerf gun and a roll of caps

let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:08 (ten years ago)

xxp lol benelli as well, but that's a slightly more understandable goof

shopping lists are a flat circle

wk, Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

also like, if we're really on a one-way ticket to crazytown involving vince vaughn shooting two guns at once i can't complain, i just can't

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:11 (ten years ago)

YES

j., Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:14 (ten years ago)

ON BIKE

j., Thursday, 6 August 2015 17:14 (ten years ago)

Maybe the Blackwater guy used riot shells and Kitsch will come riding through the smoke and debris.

Or the wife with guns blazing, that'd be nice.

... (Eazy), Thursday, 6 August 2015 18:02 (ten years ago)

i hope the season ends with some bad guy about to to shoot ray when all of a sudden an unmanned motorcycle comes out of nowhere and runs him over.
