Stone faced cops were great and appropriate but it's that you cant, thematically, EVER have them shutting down a monologue because it would puncture the whole show that's funny.

For these characers to work -- and it's not just this show but might be how the genre kind of works -- they can't ever pick on someone their own size.

Now I'm thinking about a retired Letterman walking into this world and making comments

"He wants to watch Friends"

Cunga, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)

my money is on ryan reynolds in season 3.

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:02 (ten years ago)

no way he'll be busy deadpooling

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:03 (ten years ago)

they could swing a left and go for classy-but-cheap actors rather than screen idols desperate for a comeback but if they stick with the running theme you gotta think "who's is desperate enough to FOLLOW colin farrell and vince vaughn on a show no one only a rarified, seasoned few enjoyed, but hasn't already done a lot of tv"

deadpool is coming out feb 2016, plenty of time for ryan to work around that

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:05 (ten years ago)

and even if deadpool turns his cinematic career around, a run on an hbo show is likely to do more for his dramatic rep than the umpteen unseen indie movies he does

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:06 (ten years ago)

s 3 deadpool detective: whales whales whales

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:06 (ten years ago)

i'm not saying he wouldnt be awesome in TD3, but i dont see it happening logistically

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:09 (ten years ago)

yeah that's why i said when deadpool is coming out

if s2 did well they could actually upgrade from vaughn/farrell/mcadams but i can't imagine anybody above their scale would think following this season is the way to go

maybe timberlake

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:10 (ten years ago)

yeah, stunt casting with somebody looking to SHOW THEIR RANGE and make a mark as a serious actor sounds likely.
T.I. maybe

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:11 (ten years ago)

"actor looking to show their range and thinks following Vince Vaughn is the way to do it" man that's a shallow pool

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:14 (ten years ago)

Season 3 cast: Dominic West & Wendell Pierce.

xp perhaps even a... dead... pool

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:15 (ten years ago)

esp with other shows snapping away options like josh duhamel and kirsten dunst

xpost both those guys already have shows!

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:16 (ten years ago)

James Carrey

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:21 (ten years ago)

josh brolin is top of my wishlist but he's been hoovered up by marvel, doubtful that wd ever happen

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:29 (ten years ago)

surely he could film his next three years of marvel appearances in a week

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:38 (ten years ago)

I thought we'd already decided on Davids Duchovny and Foley for s3

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:38 (ten years ago)

actually guardians 2 is less than two years away nevermind, brolin might be busy

duchovny is already a true detective on the hunt for manson - aquarius got renewed

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:39 (ten years ago)

schlump good points re “crayon-drawing levels of dramaturgy” & “comic-strip-panel-depth depressing situation with no relief” & yet—

tone of that scene & others is weird, like weird misfire which i find makes for interesting, defamiliarizing television
yes it’s all too over-obvious yet also, oddly, hard to read
super-awkward/ indeterminate tone, straddling/ shifting uncomfortably between pathos & bathos
“by all means buddy, find friends”; kid taking blank/sad bite of pizza— i mean those moments are kind of hilarious! are they meant to be?

like maybe one characteristic quality of many td scenes is anticlimactic beat to them, deflating beat
intentional and/or not

enjoyed the kitchen scene— again the iconic table— enjoyed partly bc nothing about it felt like it was taking place in real world of actual human beings (as opposed to walking talking parables)

drash, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:43 (ten years ago)

Honestly, the bits with Farrell and the kid remind me more than anything of Billy Bob Thornton's interactions with the kid in Bad Santa. I keep waiting for Farrell to just explode at the pile of Play-Doh he persists in thinking of as his child, but it never happens.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:54 (ten years ago)

bad santa is good comparison
what’s hard to determine is whether vein of black comedy running through td2’s dramatic scenes is at all intentional or not

drash, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:10 (ten years ago)

I think season 3 will be a lot like season 1, with two dudes working in scary rustic-horror settings, and this season will be remembered as the experimental one before they want back to formula. The Halloween III of the series.

Cunga, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:16 (ten years ago)

Yeah that seems like a logical trajectory

latebloomer, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:21 (ten years ago)

on a show no one only a rarified, seasoned few enjoyed

having watched the show last night w/ neighbors who loved it (and aren't online as much) i'm beginning to think that only social media hates this season

which is literally no surprise whatsoever for numerous reasons

extremely lag∞n postings voice (slothroprhymes), Monday, 27 July 2015 20:27 (ten years ago)

I think the next season should be set in space

latebloomer, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:27 (ten years ago)

just two guys hanging out in the space station, arguing

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:30 (ten years ago)

Yeah, for all the bitching about how lousy this season is compared with season 1, it's good to bear in mind that the most popular shows on TV are NCIS and CSI. Most people love formula crime stuff.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Monday, 27 July 2015 20:33 (ten years ago)

which this show, for all its flaws, is decidedly not, so the average joe/jane still prob views this as prestige of some sort, but in the land of the zing economy its p much doomed from jump

extremely lag∞n postings voice (slothroprhymes), Monday, 27 July 2015 20:36 (ten years ago)

well it does have boobs

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:37 (ten years ago)

(doesn't it? HBO has a quota)

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:38 (ten years ago)

Quite a few last night...

schwantz, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:44 (ten years ago)

what’s hard to determine is whether vein of black comedy running through td2’s dramatic scenes is at all intentional or not

Given the genre, is Raymond Chandler writing "he looked about as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food" intentionally funny?

... (Eazy), Monday, 27 July 2015 20:50 (ten years ago)

that's both funny and appropriate and well done (and likely less hackneyed in its time)
this, all of this, not so much

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 July 2015 20:51 (ten years ago)

lot of jokes in Chandler

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:52 (ten years ago)

"i lit a cigarette that tasted like a plumber's handkerchief"

extremely lag∞n postings voice (slothroprhymes), Monday, 27 July 2015 20:53 (ten years ago)

Maybe this is more like wondering if a Paul Auster sentence is aiming to be funny, faux-philosophical, or profound.

... (Eazy), Monday, 27 July 2015 21:11 (ten years ago)

Fred Ward and Robert Forster should be the season 3 leads, Vincent Gallo as villain

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:11 (ten years ago)

Officially voting Kevin Kline & Lindsay Lohan for season 3.

... (Eazy), Monday, 27 July 2015 21:12 (ten years ago)

drash OTM about the weird offness and anticlimax of a lot of scenes making them stranger and more interesting and, yes, funny

I'm not sure how much of that humor is intentional, but certainly some of it is ... it's a kind of absurdity not all that distant from Rust Cohle's antinatalism

Chandler is very funny indeed, but Marlowe's wisecracks usually puncture the absurdity of 40s/50s SoCal and its inhabitants from the perspective of a guy who remembers when you could kick a can in the street ... underneath his sarcasm he's basically a knight errant trying to restore order ... I see Pizza more as being all DON'T YOU SEE about that kind of order not existing

Brad C., Monday, 27 July 2015 21:17 (ten years ago)

said it before but people looking for bizarre tone and pacing in mystery tv need to check out hemlock grove

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:22 (ten years ago)

i saw two episodes of that, it was garbage

extremely lag∞n postings voice (slothroprhymes), Monday, 27 July 2015 21:24 (ten years ago)

i didn't say it was good

da croupier, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:28 (ten years ago)

I thought this season was supposed to be about the 'occult underbelly of LA' or some shit but other than a bird mask I've seen nothing of the sort.

akm, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)

it's actually about Colin Farrell's kid's occult underbelly

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:41 (ten years ago)
