I went to Pinochios--these nice boys at the famous ice cream shop recommended i either go there or to some Mexican place.

Why is it never time for you to WALK across the streets in Boston? At every street I came to, traffic was whizzing by, there was never a walk sign, and I had to push the stupid button and wait forever. Then, get 1/3 of the way across the huge street, and start all over again.

I found the areas of Boston where white people live mostly useless, but I enjoyed the Spanish (Hyde Square, Chelsea), Portuguese (East Cambridge), Chinese (Chinatown), Korean (Allston), Vietnamese (Uphams Corner), whatever pan-asian thing the the Porter Exchange is, and most of Roxbury/Dorchester well enough.

Radiowise, the only college stuff I enjoyed much were the Late Risers Club on WMBR (some of the best radio I've ever heard, actually), the goofy classic rock show that comes on after it, and the Greek(?) guy who plays 60's garage rock on WHRB. The Record Hospital was very disappointing, given all the legendary stuff I'd heard about it, but the orgies on WHRB are great. I never found anything interesting on WERS and WZBC.

Actually, it's Wilson Square (seriously, I'm not making this up). But yeah, down the street a bit from Porter. (Or Portah, if you prefer).

I figured there must've been a hundred barbecues in Dorchester better than Redbones, but I never managed to find any. Redbones is fun enough but the food is totally forgettable.

Who are the famous athletes from Boston? The only one I can think of is Marvin Hagler. Did Reggie Lewis grow up in Boston? I know he went to Northeastern.

Boston has the shortest, most inconspicuous MLK Blvd. I've ever seen. Why bother even having one? I also heard something about the Zakim Bridge also being called the Bunker Hill bridge because the Charlestown residents didn't want the bridge to be named for a Jew. Did I read that somewhere on this thread?

So I'll be near Copley Square Sunday sometime through Tuesday night. Anyone have any commentary on nearby restaurants/hotels? I probably won't have time for local stuff besides food and maybe a loop around the Public Garden, but Boston must-sees? I've been to Cambridge before.

well, my viewing was limited - a pre-check-in trip to see a few races at Head of the Charles, and pre- and post-dinner walks around Back Bay, down to Tremont St, and up to Louisburg Sq - but I think I'm with Dan on this one - it's Neither. A real city, yes, moreso than DC. But I can see good reasons why one would want to live in DC rather than NYC, and don't see the same for Boston beyond work with a few institutions. It's nice, but it's too nice. Where's all the grit? Why does everyone look the same?

I knew I was missing something. I've been through South Station before, but don't remember it.

Maybe it was just a reaction to the planning-gone-bad/mall-in-the-bad-sense of Back Bay (and inappropriate attribution back to the real thing in Beacon Hill, which, admittedly, I saw at night and while distracted by a phone). I did kinda like what I saw of the South End, and Trinity and other churches were interesting.

OH YES. We had friends who lived in a 600 sq ft condo that they paid $350,000 for. 600 SQUARE FEET. If you want a decent amount of living space, you are EASILY looking at $600+K.

I think I want more, not grit, but what it produces or is a product of - dynamism. It just seems so reified. I dunno, I'm probably being too down on it. Maybe its brisk familiarity made it lonely for a single explorer, whereas humid, strange Houston was a fun adventure. Maybe it was just allergies.

Boston's a difficult city to appreciate in a few days (much less seven going on eight years).

Ultimately it's cities like Somerville and Cambridge and an area like the South End that give Boston any sort of dynamism (or character). Boston itself? Boston proper?

It's very vanilla.

Although I took a long look at the newer half of the Public Library today and I must say: that's some dope ass exterior design going on right there.

I like how Tracer's post near the top of this thread has now fully justified itself:

First, Ned, it's spelt Carl Yastrzemski. As great as the Rooster was he is not by any stretch better than Manny, so 70s Boston loses in left field. But: Harvard Square hadn't become utterly uninteresting yet, Aerosmith didn't take showers yet... close call. But I'd still trade it all for Manny.
