I had no idea what Gawker was either, though I'm sure I'd saw it mentioned before, probably on ILX, I do own a TV however

I am not kidding fwiw

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:39 (eight years ago) link

I feel you tuomas, 100% of my knowledge of Gawker comes from that thread, it's certainly not a site I would have ever bothered to be aware of otherwise

lol

flopson, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:39 (eight years ago) link

wait I guess I heard about Gawker first on the Rob Ford thread, so that's not entirely true. Still my awareness of their schtick is 100% ILX-based. I mean, why would I bother to read that shit, I have better things to do.

Οὖτις, Friday, 24 July 2015 18:40 (eight years ago) link

for the record let me state here and may it be known forever that i only know about pitchfork media from the pitchfork is dumb part #345345346543543543534543654765 thread, why would i bother to read that shit otherwise?

Οὖτις, there are some ilxors who would lol at you if you said you do more reading in books than on the internet. to them this is equivalent to living your in a cave and crapping on the ground.

Aimless, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:04 (eight years ago) link

American ILXors maybe. There are others, not that many anymore but still...

Possibly Fingers (Tom D.), Friday, 24 July 2015 19:07 (eight years ago) link

or rather, first sentence is correct if you mean people would lol if you posted on ilx that you did more reading in books than on the internet. private conversation less likely.

Aimless, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

ilx IS definitely fond of nose-tweaking folks who have lots of time for it but regularly announce they have little time for crap. personally i think speaks well of our irreverence towards ourselves.

da croupier, Friday, 24 July 2015 19:22 (eight years ago) link

I have so much time for crap I can't even tell you.

I read books. Don't mind the flickerings of light on the cave wall that is ILX either.

― gawker's psychotic monkeys (imago), Friday, July 24, 2015

Two summers ago I was staying at a friend's house in his village outside Cambridge. He had a hunting license and a number of shotguns, and I agreed to go out shooting with him. On the first day I hit nothing save for a tin can. On the second day, we lay in wait in a copse until a plump woodpigeon sat athwart an overhead branch. I brought it down with one blast and wrung its neck before stuffing it into my jacket. Later that evening we would eat its breast, fried and then halved, over toast. But what stays from me particularly was what happened shortly afterwards. An oncoming rustle from a hedgerow alerted me to some impending beast. Yet I was stayed from cocking my gun - lack of hunter's instinct perhaps - as then a bright fox burst from the grasses and stood not three yards away. We contemplated one another and then the fox set off in a straight line away from me, at no more than a brisk trot. My friend had spoken of a local fox who had long eluded his sights - perhaps this was the very one - anyhow, I cocked my gun, raised it to my shoulder as instructed, took aim at the target from a distance of approximately thirty to forty feet, and fired. I am not sure what force tilted my arm that day, but the fox, intact, veered back into the undergrowth, and barring a subsequent half-hearted crack at a flying pheasant that naturally also missed, I have never fired a weapon since. Indeed, I am grateful that I never did hit that fox, for foxes are magnificent animals, dear to me since early youth, and I would hate to have slain some beast I wasn't even intending to eat. The pigeon? It is done, and it will not be done again.
