― chinavision!, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:29 (ten years ago)
its obvs a silly standard cause the post in question that precipitated it obvs while not being the most compelling thing ive ever read was def interesting
― lag∞n, Friday, 24 July 2015 17:30 (ten years ago)
"interesting" so nebulous a standard as to be meaningless, you could easily argue that the geithner piece was "interesting," just in the wrong ways
xps ha

Grubstreet has celebrities write down all their meals for a week. Lots of scintillating "two eggo waffles and black coffee" content.

http://blog.longreads.com/2015/07/20/dr-v-writer-caleb-hannan-speaks-for-the-first-time-about-what-went-wrong/
Hannan reflected on the ideas that journalists should hold people accountable or seek out the truth at all cost. But it’s not that simple. “At every point in the reporting I could justify myself going forward … ‘I’m doing my job.’ But part of the job was to assess whether it was worth it. And there were two people who saw that. In talking with my wife, in talking with this fact-checker, I said, ‘What happened?’ And they said, ‘You were in denial.’

I often find the grub street diaries p interesting but it depends on the subject, they're rarely v 'celebrity' celebrities tbh

Based on a quick scan of the internet, it doesn't appear that that question is being asked very often.

to be fair that Caleb Hannan story was Grantland's disaster, not Gawker's. he amazingly had the balls to open his mouth about Gawker's situation though:https://twitter.com/calebhannan/status/621870128951508992

Post-facto, yes. I think the point was that it would be good to ask it more before publication -- or even before assignment.

I buy that the outing wasn't the problem. I don't buy that there wasn't a problem, which that anonymous "staffer" still seems to be saying. Whatever you think of any given company (or nonprofit, or governmental body), their employees' personal lives aren't all fair game for global exposure just because they get a paycheck from someone you don't like. Criticizing professional work is one thing -- like HamNo vs. MEW -- but to frame this thing as "It's OK because outing doesn't matter," or "It's OK because he was a sort-of public figure" misses the actual point.

"I hate to be hyperbolic, but want to understand ISIS or the Tea Party or Occupy or Charleston or Dylan?" Arkin wrote in the email. "Look no further than Gawker and its ilk, which means look no further than twitter or your own so-called smartphone: We are making the world a miserable place. I’m glad I can withdraw and think about it."
― you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 July 2015 18:36 (ten years ago)

after Craggs's tonedeaf Reichstag comment i was ready to be really annoyed by Arkin's ISIS comment, but overall i'm pretty sympathetic to his letter. it sounds like it was rough going to try and cover actual important governmental stuff at that company. i don't even understand why he was ordered to take a buyout, other than just being random collateral damage in the remodeling of the site.
