Angel Face is fun
― Sharia Law and Lambchop (The Yellow Kid), Friday, 24 July 2015 03:23 (ten years ago)
aww only two weeks left. barely watched anything... need to delete some stuff for room for Elevator to the Gallows.
The Locket is a great Rashomon-esque, Russian nesting doll narrative, well ahead of its time. I think it was generally slept on for years due to a lack of home video release until recently.
Angel Face is a fun Mitchum joint with a lovely, bananas femme. I am quite fond of the ending. Don't miss it!

His Kind of Woman is worth seeing for the Mitchum/Russell pairing and the screwball elements ... Macao is more of the same but less successful

Was going to say something similar

Les Blank docs Tuesday night July 28th from 8pm through to Wednesday morining
TCM PRIMETIME - WHAT'S ON TONIGHT: LES BLANK
as reflected in this TCM salute, Blank's idiosyncratic films and short subjects covered a wide range of subjects including Cajun culture in the U.S. (Spend It All, 1971): black Creole life (Dry Wood, 1973); the city of New Orleans (Always for Pleasure, 1978); cooking (Garlic Is as Good as Ten Mothers, 1980); and the polka and its devotees (In Heaven There Is No Beer?, 1984). Of the 11 Blank films shown in our tribute, no less than eight are TCM premieres!

Oops, didn't mean to cut and post all that
Tonight the Les Blank films show. Post-Midnight Clifton Chenier and blues docs should be good (worth dvring)and the 1978 New Orleans doc early in the night should also be worth checking out.
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)
Leon Russell too?
― Archaic Buster Poindexter, Live At The Apollo (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 28 July 2015 16:18 (ten years ago)

Kicking myself that I missed Les Blank's Spend It All. I didn't know it was airing until I got in later last night and saw the post above. I've been wanting to see that since Marcus put it in his decade-end list in an old James Monaco book. (It's on YouTube, I think, but that doesn't work for me.)
Here's something bizarre, though. I was at a rep screening of Me and Earl and the Dying Girl last night. I won't get into the movie here, but it not only includes a clip from Blank's Burden of Dreams, it has a reenactment of the same scene.

The Les Blank movies are available on TCM on Demand until August 5th
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 30 July 2015 03:46 (ten years ago)
Thanks. I took a look, and that doesn't seem to be an option in Canada (not sure if my set-up would be suitable anyway).
― clemenza, Thursday, 30 July 2015 13:19 (ten years ago)
Sorry. I am gonna try to take advantage of it here in the US

Hulu Plus works for TCM on Demand too, according to a posting on ILM

If you still have a place that rents Criterions near you, Spend It All is in their Les Blank box set.
― Love, Wilco (C. Grisso/McCain), Thursday, 30 July 2015 20:20 (ten years ago)
If TCM had an on demand thing like HBO Now (aka doesn't require a cable subscription) I would snap it up so damn fast
― musically, Thursday, 30 July 2015 20:43 (ten years ago)
they KINDA do but it's pretty meh
― let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 July 2015 20:44 (ten years ago)
If you have Sling, you can stream TCM for $5 extra per month. No on demand yet though.
― Chris L, Thursday, 30 July 2015 21:05 (ten years ago)
http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/ claims to have access to the past week's films on demand but i've had poor luck with it
― let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 30 July 2015 21:06 (ten years ago)
99% of my TV watching (not counting sports) is streaming – I don’t have the time or patience to watch things live anymore #firstworldproblems. Sling sounded great until I learned it didn’t come with VOD for all channels. I’ll give their website a try to see if there’s anything available for non-subscribers.
When Netflix first launched its streaming service it had a really solid catalog of classic films, now that their emphasis is on TV and original content their back catalog is pretty damn pathetic. Would like to see someone step up to offer classic movie streaming (and not terrible public domain films tyvm) for cord cutters.

900+ Criterions on Hulu...
― rack of lamb of god (WilliamC), Thursday, 30 July 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)
If they the same volume and kinds of ads that they did when I had my hulu trial earlier this year then no thanks. I still have some of the commercials memorized ugh
― musically, Friday, 31 July 2015 02:06 (ten years ago)
no commercials on the criterions iirc they're just horribly organized.
― let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Friday, 31 July 2015 02:07 (ten years ago)
How so, forks?
― rack of lamb of god (WilliamC), Friday, 31 July 2015 02:13 (ten years ago)
they're alphabetized and THAT'S ITso hunting for something to watch means that you have to know what you're looking for and even then it might be organized differently.some of this shifts depending on the GUI and player you use but Tivo/iOS/Sony's interfaces for Hulu and Criterion are very poor.
i just got (for my bday) an amazon fire tv explicitly to play mubi on my television; it's the only machine i can find that has an app. will report back.
― let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Friday, 31 July 2015 02:24 (ten years ago)
Oh, I use my little cheat sheet -- sort by year, director, length, IMDB rating, etc.https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12MGHYZXB_lTyWIoG_7-r4s-Xlve-obn1bM34kbDVtW8/edit#gid=901134214

nice. i just want to explore though.
― let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Friday, 31 July 2015 02:29 (ten years ago)
best thing I've ever seen in my life. thank you.
― dan selzer, Friday, 31 July 2015 14:11 (ten years ago)
My particular frustration is with the title cards for selection, some of them are informative and some aren't. Some will list the director or whatever but the image is so small you can barely see it.
― dan selzer, Friday, 31 July 2015 14:14 (ten years ago)
you should freeze the title/director etc row to keep it on the top.
― dan selzer, Friday, 31 July 2015 14:20 (ten years ago)
Yeah, I never have figured out how to do that. yellow = I've seen it, btw

― skateboards are the new combover (Dr Morbius), Friday, 31 July 2015 15:45 (ten years ago)
I think it's just View: Freeze 1 row, but you need the title row to be on top.

Got it -- thanks, dan!

I've been trying to catch up on the noir films with TCM on Demand, but sometimes the site doesn't load or the films time out.
I passed the Film Noir class--anyone else take it? So much fun!
― Virginia Plain, Friday, 31 July 2015 17:38 (ten years ago)
heh, i got caught up and only did the first three weeks. gotta go back as long as it's up!

Martin Scorsese writes about “a few women whose work has affected me over the years, and whose careers tell interesting stories.” And they are Gene Tierney, Olivia de Havilland and Teresa Wright.

Marx Brothers/Groucho solo on Friday. My sad confession: I haven't seen any of their films other than Duck Soup/Opera/Races, so I'll be recording a bunch.
