lag∞n, Friday, 24 July 2015 15:28 (ten years ago)

protip: the Starbucks "flat white" tastes better than Starbucks lattes, because they use a ristretto shot setting on the espresso machine. And you can ask for one iced, although the cashier might be confused at first.

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 15:39 (ten years ago)

good to know, there are unfortunately many situations in which starbucks is the only reasonable option around

marcos, Friday, 24 July 2015 16:01 (ten years ago)

Oh yes, I went to law school across the street from a starbucks so I understand this well. I have a bunch of "hacks."

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 17:48 (ten years ago)

One thing I often found fairly drinkable and satisfying was a "Double Tall Two Pump Mocha" -- i.e. a tall mocha with an extra shot and less chocolate syrup, and of course no whipped cream. I also like the "short" size because you get a better proportion of espresso to milk.

five six and (man alive), Friday, 24 July 2015 17:49 (ten years ago)

I usually just order a tall cappuccino when I go to Starbucks. Last time I was there, I noticed that cappuccino is not even listed on their menu board any more - there's not room for it I guess with all the frappuccino variations.

i'm a recent convert to pour over coffee. got a bodum pour over coffee maker - essentially a chemex but with a reusable filter. A+

Treeship, Monday, 27 July 2015 18:08 (ten years ago)

question about pour over coffee: since the coffee is very slowly dripping down, doesn't it cool off a lot? one reason french press kind of bothers me is that by the time the coffee is done steeping and i pour it into my mug it really is not a hot cup of coffee. w/ my moka pot it is very hot and i pour it directly into my mug rather than some temporary vessel where it sits

marcos, Monday, 27 July 2015 18:24 (ten years ago)

i think the pour over coffee is hotter tbh because it's very hot when i pour it in. (not boiling bc the box said not to but just about)

Treeship, Monday, 27 July 2015 18:42 (ten years ago)

and it doesn't drip thaaaat slowly, really. i think it's about as fast as my mr. coffee.

Treeship, Monday, 27 July 2015 18:43 (ten years ago)

u r supposed to warm the mug up w hot water beforehand

a (waterface), Monday, 27 July 2015 18:44 (ten years ago)

no, you bring a kettle of water to just under a boil and then pour it over the filter

Treeship, Monday, 27 July 2015 18:46 (ten years ago)

no you cast a spell of warming

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 July 2015 18:49 (ten years ago)

warming spell is p basic magic

a (waterface), Monday, 27 July 2015 18:54 (ten years ago)

i always scald the cup/cone/filter beforehand

lag∞n, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:29 (ten years ago)

also i have an insulated french press :)

lag∞n, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:30 (ten years ago)

With the chemex, I usually bring my kettle to a boil, let it sit for 30 seconds, pour in a little to prep the grounds, then do two larger pour overs. In the time it takes to do this (about 10 minutes overall), it doesn't really cool off at all, it's pretty hot.

too young for seapunk (Moodles), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:31 (ten years ago)

insulated french press is the way to go

we live in the future, they insulate things now

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:33 (ten years ago)

also figured out how to not make things out of glass that will break in the sink

lag∞n, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:36 (ten years ago)

is an insulated french press Not See Through ?

tender is the late-night daypart (schlump), Monday, 27 July 2015 19:39 (ten years ago)

lag∞n, Monday, 27 July 2015 19:50 (ten years ago)

Yeah we have one like that, too (because we kept smashing the glass ones).

Jeff, Monday, 27 July 2015 20:53 (ten years ago)

I'm pretty sure you broke the one before the one I most recently broke.

carl agatha, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:18 (ten years ago)

No way!

Jeff, Monday, 27 July 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)

i bet u did

difficult-difficult lemon-difficult (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 27 July 2015 21:57 (ten years ago)

btw I saw some coffee blogger claim that his thorough testing showed that an unbleached filter added a lot more unwanted extra taste to pour-over coffee than a bleached one, which is contrary to intuitive naturalness=goodness thinking

five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 28 July 2015 01:54 (ten years ago)

My brother works in the coffee industry and he told me the same thing. Since he pointed it out, I do notice a stronger paper smell when using an unbleached filter.

o. nate, Tuesday, 28 July 2015 01:55 (ten years ago)

gold filter u guys
