I've been a unique ILXor stylist from the jump

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:42 (ten years ago)

lagoon is the one true ilx prophet, i owe my lack of capitalization and run-on sentences to him *hands him a check for $19.99 plus s/h*

not a garbageman, i am garbage, man (m bison), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:47 (ten years ago)

do people actually like her tone (the new wonkette)? It's this jargon-y smug "sassiness" that I find off-putting, like, please stop pandering with your second-lowest-common-denominator internet-isms and write like the articulate educated person you presumably are. If I wanted to read that kind of prose, I'd stick to the 20-somethings in my fb feed who provide it for free.

― sarahell, Tuesday, July 21, 2015 11:24 PM (Yesterday)

this is not exactly a unique style. i hate it too but like, have you ever read a jezebel article (to choose a topical comparison)? it's not far from this

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:47 (ten years ago)

wonkette def so far gone tho, generally pretty incoherent

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:50 (ten years ago)

Are there any ilxors who regularly use all caps in the Jezebel manner? Could be an opportunity for an ilxor looking to establish a unique style.

Treeship, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:52 (ten years ago)

leave that to twitter user film crit hulk

go hang a salami I'm a canal, adam (silby), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:53 (ten years ago)

oh god film crit hulk until ilx starts giving shit like that and the av club as much shit as gawker i will know there is no justice in the world and i cannot rest

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:56 (ten years ago)

more like screen writing seminar hulk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 04:56 (ten years ago)

sure but i think in this case that prob they cldve pulled the story in such a way that went through the proper channels and didnt alienate their ppl so completely, its seems like what editorial took from it is that shd shit ever get deep management is just not serious abt the firewall and will crumble, and of course when shit gets deep is when u need ur principles

denton is kinda reaping the poops he's sown, and not least because he's getting more incoherent each minute -- he's spent ten years going on about how gawker is the last independent publisher and only they have the steely nerve to expose the truth etc. etc. ten years ago his bloggers were racing happy hour at the magician; now they go to media parties, chat with michael wolff and flex their dicks by trashing him the next day. journalism!

i'm sure all 400 gawker employees will name each of their children tommy, but if the top guy on their side of the firewall isn't somewhat realistic (the reichstag ffs!), then someone from the real world is eventually going to point out that outing a guy does not carry the moral weight of the pentagon papers.

obv there's a lot of schadenfreude, but have *any* outside journalists -- who are pretty fond of the whole firewall thing after all! -- supported posting the story?

i don't think i disagree with u g∞nie, but i think you're giving them a bit more credit than they deserve tbh

and yeah i was going to mention that wonkette was basically otm but good god what an annoying writing style, and then sunny would come in and say that i just wanted to fuck it

mookieproof, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:00 (ten years ago)

haha booming post from mookie damn

yeah obvs the nature of the particular hill they died on lends an air of absurdity and grandiosity to the whole thing but ultimately if u pick and choose when u stand up for principles u believe in theyre not really principles anymore, maybe thats more credit than they deserve idk

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:11 (ten years ago)

maybe max n tommy were just super sick of working there who knows

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:11 (ten years ago)

nah i think they thought the ride was gonna last forever. what's the longest anyone's lasted in a high ranking position in gawker? it seems like nobody does it for more than a couple years at a time.

teenage good-ass kinja turtles (some dude), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:20 (ten years ago)

yeah not long

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:21 (ten years ago)

yeah it's an unfortunate hill to die on -- the newsweek article's quip about future generations remembering them via a one-sentence summary on wikipedia seems pretty brutally otm -- but yeah, i guess there's no point in taking a stand unless it's a controversial issue in the first place, so i'm not going to criticize that

also to another one of mookie's points, no i haven't seen any legitimate journalist defend the story on the merits, though plenty have defended the resignations on principle

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:23 (ten years ago)

i think people can and should quit whenever they feel like but it does kind of amaze me that not one person has left or threatened to leave in objection to the post. closest thing was the guy who was already fired.

teenage good-ass kinja turtles (some dude), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:25 (ten years ago)

someone tweeted wondering what the lifehacker editor thinks abt all this which is funny but also kinda a interesting question

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:28 (ten years ago)

well...max and tommy, by virtue of being higher-ranking and therefore having better career prospects/other options, have the luxury to do that xp

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:28 (ten years ago)

oh you mean in objection to running the post. yeah i mean, as has been said by many, including denton, this is the kind of story gawker has run in the past. i don't see why an employee would resign because of that

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:30 (ten years ago)

I love that wonker writing style its like film threat or fangoria in 97 or something

Cory Sklar, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:36 (ten years ago)

it's so obvious it hardly bears posting but i haven't seen anyone mention it so here goes:
one of the truly fucked up elements of this entire kerfuffle is that Ge1thn3r (just being polite) is now completely and inextricably linked (based on the testimony of one pretty damaged guy), as somebody who hires dudes to fuck them (not that there's anything WRONG with that, etc). it was in the NYT for crissakes. if they had NOT taken the piece down it's arguably likely he'd be getting less long-term scrutiny but as it stands, this story is going to be taught in journalism classes. c-suite exec or not, what an immense load of bad karma to get dropped on your head.

you are extreme, Patti LuPone. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:38 (ten years ago)

many of the articles referring to the gawker post (including the NYT iirc) do not make reference to geithner by name. tho obv anyone with any googling skills can find it

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:43 (ten years ago)

i dunno i'm curious how many people think the post was a legit new low or just something that caught fire more than other equally bad gawker posts. because i saw it pretty soon after it went up, only having seen maybe one annoyed tweet about it, and as i scrolled down the page it immediately dawned on me how awful it was on several different levels. and only then did i scroll up and look at the byline and my heart sank because i knew shit was not gonna be pretty for the person that wrote it.

teenage good-ass kinja turtles (some dude), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:52 (ten years ago)

same :/

usic ally (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:53 (ten years ago)

The guy who's already fired suggests that it'll be a notice period before we hear of any others?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:54 (ten years ago)

think this is a different scenario

balls, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 05:55 (ten years ago)

i mean breaching a nonexistent wall and wounding their writers egos is one thing, throwing a writer under the bus cuz of superiors fuckups ultimately would really be self destructive

balls, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 06:00 (ten years ago)

man i can't believe ppl repping for fucking vice and linking to present day wonkette that's amazing

balls, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 06:02 (ten years ago)

all boats rise when you take a giant shit in the water

teenage good-ass kinja turtles (some dude), Wednesday, 22 July 2015 06:05 (ten years ago)

I join Cory in liking Wonkette because the tone's funny - I mean, none of this stuff is exactly a balanced breakfast, you know?

(re: "dick wet with poo")

I read the aforementioned phrase and was like, is there some contest going on right now for who can make the most edgy for lols homophobic move in new media right now or something?

It's pretty clearly satire of the gay panic angle in the original story?

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 06:22 (ten years ago)

oh my god the new wonkette writing style is execrable

i mean it's superficially yung internet slang but it's trying way too hard to be zany, it's unreadable

lex pretend, Wednesday, 22 July 2015 06:57 (ten years ago)
