The Vice HBO shows Ive seen have been fantastic, and I loathe Vice historically as a publication. The one on illegal oil refining in Nigeria was horrifying.

cause while it might not be perfect the editorial/business firewall is an industry wide convention that is worth fighting for, there are constant internal beefs abt it up and down the line at places as serious and reputable as say the nytimes, ppl being all cynically dismissive of it just because it doesnt function perfectly are really not coming off as cooly knowledgable as they suspect

i think that's otm you do want to give your reporters a high level of independence from the business side however like the wonkette post points out there's a huge difference between pulling a story because it criticized an advertiser who didn't like it and asked for it to be pulled (a real breach of the "firewall") and pulling a story because it was a piece of shit that should've never been published and served no purpose and you were afraid that leaving it up would bankrupt your company.

sure but i think in this case that prob they cldve pulled the story in such a way that went through the proper channels and didnt alienate their ppl so completely, its seems like what editorial took from it is that shd shit ever get deep management is just not serious abt the firewall and will crumble, and of course when shit gets deep is when u need ur principles
