when asked by @pareene about their favorite posts on the gawker network, the partnership was only able to name 2 things
this might be a clue about the value of individual writers' contributions to the company - you're jaded Buzzfeed, as long as each 'vertical' pumps out a couple dozen posts each weekday to keep people checking in every now and then, that's what mattersI hope one of the things was the "best restaurant in New York" is series.

Feel like more is lost than gained in a gawker implosion, the schadenfreude is weirdly idealistic to me, like just in terms of the principles on which the company runs it's been, historically, superior to buzzfeed and vice in so many ways
― supreme problematics (D-40), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:10 (ten years ago)
Of course, now that it's inviolable principles are oops actually violable if the brands get mad, nm it's exactly the same

she's clearly pissed with /some/ good reason but also going for like faux-naif crossed with snarktastic and it's nagl
i really dont know where they think they'll have the freedom to do this shit with such abandon, like did they really not think they were slaves to fucking board members /like everybody else/
― slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:12 (ten years ago)
Wait, if they are like everyone else, then surely 'where they'll have the freedom' is.. everywhere!
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:13 (ten years ago)
well obv i mean i dunno what new media fiefdom will grant them said freedoms in a professional capacity

Which is why it sucks that it's going down in flames! I don't think you have to be defensive about the original article to think this sucks
― supreme problematics (D-40), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:17 (ten years ago)
There will, absolutely and without a doubt, some Hot New Gunslingers with a heroic editor fending off The Man that pays their paychecks, within six months. It's really really really not the fall of Camelot and end of the heroic age, guys.
― Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:19 (ten years ago)
i equate this with some indie band that maybe had one or two good songs quitting music -- there is plenty of other music to be entertained by, doesn't really matter much
― sarahell, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:21 (ten years ago)
like just in terms of the principles on which the company runs it's been, historically, superior to buzzfeed and vice in so many ways
Just in the oddball slice of life stuff (like the Youtube Munchies channel), Vice is putting out more worthwhile material than Gawker ever has.
It's almost time to stop holding Gavis McInnes against them (almost).
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:22 (ten years ago)
xps deej i dont think the whole site is cooked, although theyll def be on a slightly shorter leash as opposed to the previously nonexistent one
― slothroprhymes, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:22 (ten years ago)
i don't know how anyone could say gawker is better than vice. gawker journalism is celebrity scandals and other web institution fuckups.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:22 (ten years ago)
the movie about the Vice dudes that investigated that Jim Jones-like cult was pretty decent.

i like the gawker reports from workers in exploited industries?
― j., Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:25 (ten years ago)
yeah, don't read/visit either regularly but find vice articles more (often) interesting to me than gawker's
― drash, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:27 (ten years ago)
& i like the series
yeah the vice travel section of the website (which i guess is their international news euphemism) and the tv show are both a+
― Mordy, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:31 (ten years ago)
Vice does things that seem like they actually take resources and guts to do, so much of Gawker is just like commentary on commentary.

Yeah noisey Atlanta was a real fuckin accomplishment
When is Joan Crawford going to start a boycott for grantland for the golf club story
― supreme problematics (D-40), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:39 (ten years ago)
The thing that is better about gawker of course is that if there had been a "gawker Atlanta" gawkers employees would be able to call it out publicly
If you know of another site that does that in six months plz let me know so I can like it on the facebook
― supreme problematics (D-40), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:40 (ten years ago)
not wanting to sell out to #brands/capitalism seems quaint when in the big picture gawker is mostly just lucky that it still makes economic sense for #brands to associate w/ people who produce online content, some of which is journalistic. the struggle to ensure that journalism is economically viable in any form seems like 'the more important struggle' than the one between edit and ad. doesn't gawker already have some form of native advertising anyway? but when no one's a journalist nobody will be left to betray their principles.
― iatee, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)
xp - Kind of dirty for you to ride so hard to be Max's replacement, man.
― Kiarostami bag (milo z), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:46 (ten years ago)
I just think it sucks that journalists worried about their jobs feel obligated to always fear burning bridges and that's pretty much an extension of the problem of ensuring journalism is viable. It's not some separate issue
― supreme problematics (D-40), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:48 (ten years ago)
lol in what profession is it not dangerous to burn bridges when you quit a job, srs question
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:49 (ten years ago)
man it sucks so bad. siqq Joan Crawford burn btw, bro.
― Cory Sklar, Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:50 (ten years ago)
I'm slightly cynical about the *values of journalism* being so sacrosanct and separate from the values of the marketplace -- what journalists' instincts tell them is a "good story" is very much influenced by the marketplace, and this is a perfect example, except that it was kind of a misfire.
― five six and (man alive), Tuesday, 21 July 2015 21:51 (ten years ago)
Lol as soon as you say something that isn't an unqualified damning of max and Jordan --like, half the people here seem to think Denton is the reasonable one?--it turns into an ad hom about my supposed careerism? If anything what I'm saying here is more likely to limit my opportunities in the future but keep dragging my own career into it

Circle jerking about the sanctity of editorial independence and acting like 'journalists' are Catholic Workers out there doing the Lord's work seems to come in direct proportion to the banality and irrelevance of the journalism.

Which is why there is value in the existence of a company that exists as an inverse marketplace, whose $ interests are in reporting on the things others won't?
Fwiw in case I haven't said this in the strongest terms or it's like required to post here, Jordan's post sucks and I don't think their operating procedure needs to make a space for that; someone should have checked it.
But this idea that gawker is pure evil and vice is more benign is hilariously off

I don't care what anyone says about how Vice's journalism may have improved/been stepped up over the years their shitty business practices and lengthy history of prior shitty things like big upping adorable white supremacists or promoting the use of racial slurs or basically just being entitled neo-republican assholes means I will never click on any of their bullshit
xp

Oh I don't think Vice is benign at all, I think they're kind of an evil empire, but they have done some amazing international reporting, and I doubt Gawker has done a single article that would stand up to Vice's 10-20 best videos.
